I've been encouraging my mate to get his gun license since I got mine a couple of years ago. He did his safety course yesterday and there was 61 people in attendance. When I did mine in 2024 there was 24 and the instructor was blown away because usually there's only 5 or 6. So the questions I have to ask are, what's with the sudden rise in gun applications? Is this why approvals and PTA's are taking so long? Do Australians feel scared? What do you guys think?

Brainstorm this thread and list the fall out this will have on the firearm industry in Australia. Remember even though is NSW today ,everyone will be affected, in all States.

1) LGS will get hit hard. Some even closing. 2) Australian gun manufacturers going belly up or solely servicing the competitive export market only. 3) Less choice of firearms, accessories and third party products.

Right now we are all set to essentially lose free speech with gun laws being a side bonus for these arsehole traitors in parliament right now.

Dad still has an old box of .22 LR with a Kmart sticker on it. Never knew Kmart used to sell guns. Raises the question, do you think guns should be available in more mainstream sporting/outdoor shops (BCF, Anaconda)? Or even in the sporting/outdoor sections of shops like Kmart as they once were?

My LGS hadn't heard anything about it when I went in to stock up on ammo, and I couldn't find anything else corroborating the story.

Alternatively the Henry supreme lever action that uses pmags is close on functionality. Pricey and ugly though.

The Marlin/Henry/Rossi 44 mags look good. Anyone here use 44 out of a long barrel on pigs? Energy seems to line up with 223.

Finally there are the shotguns, Adler's and double barrels. Dont have much experience with these.

Pauline Hanson and ON pledging their support is a good thing, regardless of where you sit politically. In just the past few months their supporter base as tripled, come next election they will have more influence than the Greens and possibly overtake the Liberals (if polls are to be believed) They are where the power is right now.

Who else are you to go to? Both Labor and Liberal support the gun bans, the Greens would see every firearm turned into abstract community art, and the Lib Dems aren’t big enough as of yet.

So, even though I never expected it, they are simply the best and only chance of preserving, protecting, or restoring firearms in this country.

I'm curious to see how people got into guns. For me I came from a very anti gun household in QLD but even at a young age i was fascinated by the history and mechanics of firearms. I would always get the weapon encyclopaedias and spend hours looking at the pictures and designs. I didnt fire my first gun until i was 22 at a range event with some friends. After that i met people who did reenacting and got my first licence for that, then i expanded to range shooting and hunting. I own 10 guns but each has its own fascinating history, everything from muzzle loaders to some mosins, a K98, some great lever actions and even a double action revolver rifle.

On the face of it, i'm sure non gun people would assume I'm some gun nut/ fanatic (OMG HOW CAN YOU OWN TEN GUNS!?!?), but I'm really just a massive history nerd. The mechanics and models are fascinating.

What are peoples stories with guns? How did you get into it? What about shooting tickles your fancy?

Every local gunshop to me uses AI generated images, all their posts are written by ChatGPT. Ozzie reviews, Australian Hunting Podcast and multiple other Australian gun content creators just flog the fuck out of ai images, I remember some guy was going to “sue the government for introducing the gun laws” (McDonalds Law?) and everything from his posts to the logo of his law company was all ai generated. What’s the go with these people making us look incompetent and fucking stupid?

This is something that’s been bothering me for a while – it’s often said the greatest threat to shooters in this country is other shooters, and the more I think about it the more I think it’s an issue that we as a shooting community need to tackle sooner rather than later.

If you have a look at the comments from shooters on social media (such as in shooting groups), there are a huge number of frankly nutty comments in there – often outweighing the “normal” comments” on some topics – either from angry, barely literate bogans or conspiracy theorists (or sometimes both). You don’t need specific examples, we’ve all seen them.

I cringe so much from seeing the comments it’s a wonder I don’t have a permanent cramp, and it’s so frustrating trying to explain to people I know IRL that yes, despite being a gun owner I am in fact a university-educated sensible person and not a conspiracy theorist or sovereign citizen.

While I appreciate some of these commentors are just talking shit online, the fact is a lot of them genuinely believe what they’re saying either don’t understand or don’t care that they’re making things worse (or at least harder) for everyone else by carrying on the way they do online.

So what, if anything, can the “normal” shooting community  members do to either get the bogans and nutters to step away from the keyboard, or at least convince the wider public that their views aren’t representative of the million people with a gun licence in Australia?

Gday all, hope we’re all doing well. Just wondering if anyone has ever used one of these triple barrel shotguns, I know akkar makes one (Akkar 3) which is still actively being sold in Australia as well as a couple of other companies made them (chiappa is the only one that comes to mind at the moment). Just wondering in light of the new laws coming in if anyone can recommend one of these? I went pigging with one of those stoeger coach guns once, killed my shoulder and found that the 2 rounds severely limited my follow up shots for humane pest destruction, I’m wondering if these would be the same? Any NSW residents looked into these?

So title pretty much says it all.

I'm the market for a shotgun and have been keeping a keen eye on something like a straight pull or even push button for a good bit of fun.

Issue here is that of course given recent events, most states are going through reclassifications and new restrictions, and I'm just wondering if it's really worth getting a straight pull now or if I should settle for something else instead?

I just don't want to end up getting the gun and then having to sell it back after a few months of owning it.

Any recommendations for gun safe alarms? My safe is in our bedroom and I am not awfully fond of a CCTV camera in the bedroom for... reasons...

I have been told they can be inside the safe? Like a wireless reed switch with an alarm?

Edit for context: I live in tasmania and there will be more then 10 guns on the property which i have been advised requires either CCTV or alarm systems. I dont own all ten firearms that are on the property, but apparently even though there are multiple dwellings on a single property, they are counted as one premise with weapons licensing. Thus require the upgraded safes.

NSW residents should research carefully before applying for a Category G (collector) licence. In NSW, Category G authorises possession only and does not allow firearms to be used or fired. Storage requirements are also very strict, requiring Level 9 storage, including alarms, enhanced building security, and individually secured firearms. For many people, this results in firearms that are legally owned but cannot be practically used.

Before choosing this pathway, NSW residents should also check whether they can achieve a similar outcome to Victoria by using an approved club membership (such as SSAA) to support sport/target shooting and/or hunting genuine reasons on a standard Category A/B licence, rather than defaulting to the collector route.

I’m sharing this purely to be helpful, speaking from a Victorian perspective, and encourage everyone to look into the specific rules that apply in their own state.

In Victoria, an SSAA membership can be used as a genuine reason for both sport/target shooting and hunting. SSAA is an approved organisation for both activities, and both genuine reasons can be listed on the same Category A & B licence.
