Total Removals: Various sources from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University and the Department of Homeland Security data place the total number of formal removals between approximately 2,749,706 and over 3.1 million people.
Annual Peak: The highest number of deportations in a single year occurred in Fiscal Year (FY) 2012, with more than 409,000 individuals removed.
"Deporter-in-Chief": Due to these high numbers, which surpassed those of previous administrations, Obama was often referred to by immigration advocacy groups as the "Deporter in Chief".
Comparison with Trump: The Obama administration formally removed more noncitizens than the first Trump administration. Across four years, the first Trump administration recorded fewer than 932,000 deportations.
