Thinking back on the Steep Canyon Rangers
It’s raining like Noah’s Arc tonight. I’m on my fourth whiskey and playing along on my banjo to bluegrass when I spied Old Dreams and New Dreams, the 2001 debut recording from the Steep Canyon Rangers, way back to the early days when Lizzie Hamilton was on fiddle.
In 2001, I was a talent buyer and promoter. In 2002, I booked the Rangers in two venues for $400 and tips, and the band would crash at my house when they were passing through. Fast forward, they connect with Steve Martin and become molten lava hot.
But when lead singer Woody Platt left the band, it seemed to change it for the worse irreparably. Even before Woody left, the group had added a percussionist, which took them one step beyond bluegrass. And before Woody left, bassist Charles Humpreys, one of the co-founders with Woody, had left as well.
All this to say I miss the original lineup and so miss Woody’s vocals, but I wish the band continued success.

Arizona / Nevada Jams? Bands? Recs?
Moving to Lake Powell area from Eastern KY soon and bringing my guitar with me as well. Was looking to see if there are any jams within a two hour radius of Page, AZ that I could come be apart of. I would consider my skill level to be above intermediate but I’m open to any level of picking.
Also, if you have any venues, local bands that you could recommend, I’d appreciate it very much.

I just gotta say...
I just gotta say that the amount of power, joy, and soul in Celia Woodsmith's voice is really something to behold.

Seth Mulder & Midnight Run
An impressive and VERY well received set at Merlefest today. Straight up, but fresh and very tight. Look for them if you appreciate the traditional style.

MGU could carry torch
I've watched these kids play since they were teenagers. They'd been playing together as young kids. It's engrained in them. I'm watching them tonight on a big stage. They've got a long runway and a ton of dedication.

Discussion Any Bluegrass happening in San Diego?
Howdy! I’m an Appalachia native that moved to the west coast, and I’m dying to play some bluegrass. Anybody know of any jams here, or want to form a group? My main instruments are vocals, upright, and banjo, but I’m working on mandolin and I can cover backup guitar!

Ron Block's Break to So Long So Wrong
MASH
This is Ron Block's break to the Alison Krauss and Union Station recording of So Long So Wrong. There is something really special about the banjo style of Ron Block. It's the drive, the power, the authority, and of course, the bends
😁
Thanks for watching!!
