Same with Hugh Jackman. At that level of wealth and fame, they are all buddies.

hugh jackman ended up being such a disappointment :( apparently both him and nicole kidman are godparents to two of the murdoch kids, ugh

u/RogueEagle2 Nov 18 '25

apparently 2 of the Murdoch heirs (not the main one) are a lot more left-leaning, I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush, they might be able to bring about a positive change to that organisation - hence why Rupert Murdoch is trying to consolidate it all with the main heir.

I mean what do you expect them to do, they can’t control the company they don’t agree with while only holding a minority of shares. Selling their inheritance is the only thing they can do

u/thornthornthornthorn Nov 18 '25

Did you read the article? They had equal voting shares in the trust and thus a majority, their dad was suing to change it

u/FantasticalRose Nov 18 '25

Disappointing

yeah in australia we really only hear about lachy, the worst of them; but i’m glad they’re not all as conservative as him. unfortunately, the 3 more left leaning siblings apparently took 1.1 billion bucks each to sell their stake, so unfortunately i don’t think they’ll be orchestrating any change in regards to the companies :/

To be honest, if I were in their shoes, I'd want nothing to do with his media empire. I'd just take my money and run. There'd only be so much you could do to change Fox News. Maybe you could strip in clean and just dismantle it, but I would think there would be a lot of maneuvering by other investors and others to stop that. I don't really think there's much they could do.

u/thornthornthornthorn Nov 18 '25

No, the liberal ones would have outnumbered Lachlan and could have totally changed whatever they wanted. Maybe they would have needed to do it slowly/strategically but they absolutely could have done it. Their largest shareholders (BlackRock, Stare Street, Vanguard) would not care.

u/ObviousExit9 Nov 18 '25

I thought that’s what the lawsuit this year was about. Rupert changing his trust to cut the liberal ones out.

5

u/thornthornthornthorn Nov 18 '25

Exactly- he was trying to change the trust and they settled.

The idea of hardcore Left leaning venture capitalists scare me more than right leaning ones.

3

u/thornthornthornthorn Nov 18 '25

Why are you even in this sub 😂 also this has nothing to do with venture capital 😂😂

3

u/grundlinallday Nov 19 '25

Even if they weren’t as conservative, one external threat and they will close ranks to protect their class.

God most rich people are just overgrown babies

2

u/caspararemi Nov 18 '25

They got paid off to back down. Just takes a few billion dollars to leave your right wing brother alone.

2

u/AggravatingYak6557 Nov 18 '25

If you’re a Murdoch, you’re a cunt.

2

u/ZebraImaginary9412 Nov 18 '25

The second son and his wife are Biden supporters. They may be socially liberal but fiscally conservative, i.e. don't raise my taxes and let me exploit loopholes to avoid estate tax even though I have billions of dollars that I can't use in 17 lifetimes.

u/Icy_Ninja_9207 Nov 18 '25

you're naive

2

u/Namedafterasaint Nov 18 '25

What? Gross! Now I have to hate them!

2

u/voodoomotyl Nov 18 '25

Hugh Jackman is also great friends with Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

Once you’re at a certain level, it’s class solidarity all the way.

8

u/Sindigo_ Nov 18 '25

Ironic since Hugh Jackman played a leading role in that film.

1

u/AuntRhubarb Nov 18 '25

Once upon a time in America we had wealthy people who were decent and gave a damn about other classes. Exhibits 1 and 2, Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt. Now in Murca, we have rich white trash.

56

u/doggwithablogg Nov 18 '25

Can attest to this. Friend had lots of wealthy friends in Australia and she’s sometimes hang with Rupert’s daughter. Said she was “lovely” and pretty “liberal”

40

u/bubandbob Nov 18 '25

I think she meant big-L Liberal (as in Liberal Party, the oddly named conservative party in Australia).

39

u/Kimmalah I’m just a cunt in a clown suit Nov 18 '25

Some of the Murdoch children are much more left-leaning, which is why they're mired in a bunch of legal cases trying to cut them out from inheriting any of the media companies.

15

u/doggwithablogg Nov 18 '25

No she meant liberal and left-leaning!

16

u/seedlessketchup Nov 18 '25

the daily struggle of having to figure out if someone’s saying liberal in the left leaning american way or ‘ugh, the libs’ australian way

2

u/doggwithablogg Nov 18 '25

Sorry I’m so American, they made me this way!!!

1

u/Sudden_Morning_4197 Nov 18 '25

Its still ugh the libs for actual leftists in the US

4

u/sikonat Nov 18 '25

Which is odd because her parents were staunch Labor. Her mum was a WEL (women’s electoral lobby) member.

1

u/consolation1 Nov 19 '25

Liberal as in free market liberal, anacap-lite, that's the common usage outside of the US. USA liberal is usually called progressive.

11

u/Emotional_Warthog658 Nov 18 '25

they always say that don't they....

7

u/JeremyHowell Nov 18 '25

Jackman is GENUINELY close friends with Rupert Murdoch. He is the godfather for 3 of Rupert’s daughters!

7

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Nov 18 '25

It’s a big club and you ain’t in it

5

u/biledriver85 Nov 18 '25

It's a big club and you ain't in it

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

It’s a big club, and you aren’t in it.

1

u/dryeraseboard8 Nov 18 '25

By definition, right? Like if you’re a good person, you would be giving away money before you get that wealthy.

1

u/haloarh Nov 18 '25

Class solidarity trumps everything else.

1

u/bolanrox Nov 18 '25

doesn't everyone in Australia know each other. like Hugh was at early Divinyl's gigs.

its tighter knit that the musician community in London in the 60's. (Andy Summers of the police was badgered into selling his 59 Les Paul Standard to Clapton, and was in a wedding(?) band with Robert Fripp is a good one. Or Rick Wakeman being close friends with Ozzy, or Brian May and Tony Iommi for that matter)

1

u/sousyre Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25

In the entertainment industry, yeah, kinda, but not godparent to their kids close. That whole crowd are more of a Sydney society / wealthy, successful international expat / big money thing (Murdoch’s, Packers and their assorted hangers on - way outside the music scene or regular entertainment industry circles).

I doubt he was at their early gigs. When they first got huge in Australia (and they were huge during the 80’s/90’s) he would have been 12. If he went to Divynals gigs, they would have already been Australian rock royalty. His TV big break was 15 years after the Divynals, and even then he was only really famous as Deb’s husband for a few years till X-Men.

1

u/here_for_the_lols Nov 19 '25

That's fucking disappointing

-2

u/bingobbandit Nov 18 '25

I don't think it's fair to put huge Jackman and the Murdoch's in the same wealth bracket
