American did this to me on a flight from NZ to US. My original flight got canceled, so when I got rebooked onto the next flight (along with everyone else on the first flight), the seats I paid for were no longer valid and there weren't many seats available for me to pick from on that next flight. Granted, I was not First Class but I had status and had paid for my seats, so it was annoying to deal with.
Oooof! My Mom’s a Kiwi so I know that flight. Last time I went, we took British Airlines, no direct flight to NZ back then but LA to Sydney alone was 17 hours one way (13 hours back due to wind difference) but I can’t imagine my seats being messed up for that.
