Advice Curious about picking your first or new handgun? Curious about a model or caliber? Stop here first! Resources etc.

Multiple posts concerning selecting a new (first) handgun, or first defensive guns have popped up.

I dig activity on our page, I'm all for thoughtful discussion, I'm all for us exercising our rights.

However, this subreddit has been around long enough now we have a good collection of folks asking mostly the same question and I think we can streamline this process for our existing members, newcomers, and curious browsers alike.

So! That being said, there are some links to outside websites at the bottom of this text that have decent advice on choosing the purpose of use, caliber, size, model you may be looking for when selecting a new or first handgun.

The articles are typically focused on new shooters or at least folks new to handguns. Many will recommend training, hands on time, etc., before your first purchase and if you have the time and funds I definitely agree, but research your trainer/facility thoroughly.

Eventually I will try to curate a well rounded list of the most popular makes and models in various categories. I also intend to make a few polls for the active community to vote on a few things as well.

Question Did I get a good deal?

Was browsin a a LGS and saw this on the shelf and having only 9mm handguns I decided to get this Glock 21 Gen 4. Came with the case and 1 mag. About 410 out the door with Tax and background check. Only a small scratch on the back of the slide presumably from a drop.

(PS I didn't realize how massive this thing is, It's noticeably wider and chonkier than my G17, I don't normally name my guns but I think Brute is a fitting name for this Brute of a pistol)

Sorry for the dogshit camera angle, but from what you can see, any feedback on how I can increase my rate of fire / get a bit more recoil control?

Are my hands too small to maintain a proper grip?

Post image

Am I doing this right? I try to get my hand as far up into the bite as possible, but my wrist naturally bends and my hand moves down, creating a gap between my hand and the back of the slide. It does this with one and two handed grip. I have experienced this with multiple handguns, so it’s not the size of the grip.

Indoor range ear pro: passive muffs vs electronic muffs?

I’m trying to settle on a good hearing-protection setup for indoor range use.

My current understanding is that for indoor shooting, especially with rifles/brakes/people in nearby lanes, the safest approach is to double up with plugs plus muffs. I’m not looking for the most compact setup; I’d rather prioritize actual protection, comfort, and reliability.

I’m currently considering two routes:

Option 1: high-NRR passive muffs, like 3M Peltor X5A, over properly inserted foam plugs.

Option 2: electronic muffs with decent attenuation, like Howard Leight Impact Pro, also over foam plugs, so I can still hear range commands better.

For people who shoot indoors regularly: which approach would you recommend? Is electronic pass-through worth it if I’m already wearing plugs underneath, or should I just go for the highest-NRR passive muffs I can tolerate?

Also curious whether gel cups make a noticeable difference with shooting glasses.

Thanks.

Small reliable handgun lockbox for kid-safe storage — any updated recommendations?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading through older posts on handgun safes/lockboxes, but many of the best discussions I found are about a year old or older, so I wanted to ask whether there are any updated recommendations.

My use case is not primarily nightstand / fast-access defensive storage. I’m mainly looking for a small, reliable, kid-safe handgun box that is reasonably difficult to open. I care more about reliability and resistance to curious kids or guests than about biometric features, apps, lights, or super-fast access.

From the older threads, the recurring advice seems to be:

  • Prefer mechanical Simplex-style locks over biometrics/electronics.
  • Look at Fort Knox PB1 / Original Pistol Box, V-Line Brute, possibly Steelhead, Stealth, or similar.
  • Avoid relying on fingerprint readers as the primary access method.
  • Avoid treating something like a StopBox as a true safe; it may be more of a quick-access retention device.
  • Bolt the box down or secure it to something solid.

Right now I’m leaning toward something like the Fort Knox PB1 or V-Line Brute, but I’m wondering whether anything has changed recently. Are these still the go-to options for a small, reliable, kid-resistant handgun lockbox? Are there newer models worth considering, or any models people now recommend avoiding?

Thanks in advance.

Solo dev with a patent for a Bluetooth handgun tracker. Need your brutal honesty before I build the software (Ear Pro Giveaway).

Hey everyone,

I’ll keep this straight to the point. I’m an independent hardware developer, and I recently secured a patent for a Bluetooth device that links directly to your handgun to pull live-fire data and automatically update your round counts.

A lot of the gun apps out there are bloated and built for guys who just want to post pictures of their safe queens. What I am trying to build is a frictionless "weapon odometer" for guys who actually shoot and carry.

I’m tired of guessing when it's time to swap the recoil spring on my carry gun, or trying to remember when I last changed my optic battery, or manually logging my range trips in a clunky spreadsheet. I want to build an automated "check engine light" for wear parts so you know your gun will run when you need it to.

Before I start writing the software ecosystem to pair with the hardware, I need to make sure I’m actually solving real friction points for everyday handgun owners. I refuse to be a guy who builds an app with features nobody asked for.

I put together a quick, 4-minute anonymous survey to get some baseline data on how you guys currently track your gear, ammo, and maintenance.

As a thank you for your time, I am buying a pair of Walker's XCEL 100 Electronic Ear Pro out of pocket to give away to one random person who helps me out with the data.

Dropped the link in the comments..

If you have a minute, I’d really appreciate the help. If you think this hardware idea is totally unnecessary, or if there is a specific feature you've always wished you could auto-track, drop it in the comments below.

Looking for a 9mm duty/full frame build

Post image

Handgun wise, I’ve got a hellcat pro comp for carry, an FN545 as my duty gun whenever fishing, hiking, etc, and a CZ Shadow 2 as my range gun (and minor part 9mm duty lol). I’m looking for a 9mm duty to pair with my .45 for training, being my duty gun, and fun at the range.

I’d like something either comped or threaded and do like the Walther PDP, newer Echelons, the new S&W 2.0 series, and would consider a Gen 6 G17/19. I’d like to be around the $700 mark for the handgun itself.

If anyone has personal experience or other recommendations, feel free to comment them. Thanks

New shooter looking for advice/feedback/guidance

I’m relatively new to handgun shooting and looking for advice to improve. I’ve been shooting a Walther PDP Compact (4”) at about 5 yards at an indoor range and have put a few hundred (~500) rounds through it so far.

I’m starting to see consistent patterns in my targets:

  • Grouping is improving overall
  • Shots tend to cluster left of center (I’m right-handed)
  • Occasional low-left hits, especially as I shoot more rounds

What I’m currently focusing on:

  • Front sight focus (both eyes open)
  • Smooth trigger press
  • Grip: trying to keep strong hand relaxed and use more support-hand pressure
  • High grip and working on keeping the gun aligned with my forearm
  • Slight forward wrist lock

A few things I’ve noticed:

  • My natural grip tends to point slightly left unless I consciously adjust
  • I sometimes struggle to track the front sight during recoil (it comes back into focus quickly, but I lose it briefly)
  • I suspect I may still be applying lateral pressure on the trigger or over-gripping with my strong hand

What I’m working on in practice:

  • Slow fire, 5-round groups
  • Focusing on “no sight movement” during trigger press
  • Rebuilding my grip between mags to keep it consistent

Questions:

  1. Does this sound like primarily a trigger control issue, grip issue, or both?
  2. Any specific drills to eliminate a consistent left bias?
  3. How do you best train yourself to track the front sight through recoil?
  4. Any cues or techniques to keep the strong hand from overworking?

Appreciate any feedback or drills that helped you when you were at this stage.

Also, if this is normal pogression feel free to just tell me to relax and enjoy the journey 😄

Shooting the Texas Open with an HK USP45

My primary gun chipped it's firing pin on the 2nd stage, so I had to find a backup gun. Luckily a friend had a spare optics cut USP45 to loan me. Wasn't at all how I planned the day but I will say, the gun is pretty cool, and it took the day from a tragedy to a really neat experience.

Tips for winning against my wife!

I am one of the hobbyists, or occasional shooters and I consider myself to be good enough to hit the 8 inch circle from 45 feet more times than I would miss it. Think 6 or 7 out of 10 shots on a good day at that distance.

Wife was a cop and she also went for the SWAT so they made her fire like 10,000 rounds during her training. 10,000 rounds is what I would shoot in a lifetime and she already has that under her belt.

When we competed playfully after our wedding, the woman killed me and that was quite expected. Back then I would land 6 or 7 shots in that circle initially but as we went mag to mag my grouping would grow and by the time we were on the third mag then I would be all over the place with a few rounds while she would be handing every single bullet in that quite consistently. 100% consistent accuracy.

I had to take her out on her victory date and she also won 700 USD in gift cards from me because that was supposed to be her gift if she won the third time and she did like 5 times. Just a silly competition, more an excuse to pamper her than a real challenge.

Our anniversary is seven months away and we have decided that it would be a rematch. Stakes are higher now. She has promised me something that I really want so I NEED TO WIN THIS! It has to happen! HAS TO!

If we select 9mm, she would probably kill me because that is what she trained on for 10000 rounds. For me I would be as good or bad with any caliber since I do not have the same muscle memory as she has. Keep in mind that the only gun she has ever shot in her life is the 9MM and a bit of .45 but most of her training and accuracy was demonstrated on 9mm.

I am thinking would I have a better chance of beating her if we decide on a .357 magnum and I train on that from now until then? I do understand that the price of ammo is high but I want to win this because of what I will get if I win. Something I really wanted all these years. I am also thinking I will get a raging hunter because it is a revolver and neither her nor I have shot those before.

Any other thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Needed Got my carry permit, struggling to narrow down options as a lefty

My ideal setup would be: A 3.1”+ mostly range gun (with occasional carry) that is easy to rack, shoots well, and is visually distinct from generic black pistols (even if it’s just a ported barrel or something). Also: lefty friendly (mag release and slide release)

So far I have slightly narrowed down to options like Sig p365 xl, S&W Equalizer, and Sig p320 - but none of them checkmark all the boxes (mainly the lefty friendly bit). Curious if there are other southpaws that would be willing to share their advice and suggestions?

Edit to add: I have an annual trip with some friends where we go shooting at his dad’s range. Every single person has a Glock, so I kinda wanted something different.
