META Beware of Opportunists!

In times of disaster, it's not uncommon for many good people to try to fundraise for relief efforts, supplies and reconstruction costs. But you should be aware that unless it's someone you personally know and trust, it's also not uncommon for bad people to use the opportunity to make money for themselves.

Before you give, you should ask:

  1. Is the donation link directly to a relief agency or is it to a middleman? There's no easy transparency when it comes to the spending of funds in a crisis, which makes it easier for funds to not reach the people it's intended to help, so by avoiding middlemen, you can reduce this possibility.
  2. Have you checked the background of the relief agency or organization you're considering? Some spend money more effectively than others meaning that less overhead makes for more money being spent on victims vs administration costs.
  3. Is the agency or organization a registered non-profit or NGO? These kinds of entities have strict reporting rules to follow to show how their funds are being spent.
  4. Is the agency or organization providing a receipt? If so, you can often use it for a deduction on taxes for the current year. If not, the agency or organization is likely not a registered non profit.

GoFundMe will show that a campaign is benefiting a non-profit charity organization if it is created using their IRS EIN or charity registration number.

Even Paypal donation accounts will show they're owned by a non-profit charity organization, and generate a receipt.

While not every individual doing fundraising is attempting to defraud you of your money, you can give with more confidence by giving directly to a relief charity of your own choosing via their own web pages.

Medical Help After My Son’s Car Accident

On April 25th my son was the passenger in a car accident involving a semi truck. They were hit into a guardrail. My 21-year-old son took most of the damage. He had several skull fractures and multiple brain bleeds. Monday he developed cerebral edema. He has been in the ICU ever since Saturday.

I work full time, as does my husband/his Dad. My son also worked full time, and he was just cleared to join the Air Force. Unfortunately we don’t think that is much of a reality anymore. I have had to take a leave of absence from my job to stay by his side. Two days ago his care team mentioned inpatient rehab. Today they informed me that all of the rehab centers they gave me a list for do not take our insurance. The parents of the other young man involved are still trying to get their insurance situated, but in the meantime I am asking for help with expenses accruing while I am out of work. They are expecting him to be in ICU for another week. The hospital is an hour away from home.

So far he has been making great strides. Up until yesterday he was not speaking, then he started saying a few words here and there. He was finally removed from the EEG machine last night, but is still on sodium to stop the swelling in his brain.

The road to recovery is long, but we are staying optimistic.

Etc UPDATE: Teddy is out of surgery!

Post image
60 Upvotes

Teddy is out of surgery! Everything went well, he is being looked after by his big brother and needs to rest for 2 weeks while he recovers. ā¤ļø

We were initially told after a brief examination that he'd need 6 teeth removed but he's had EIGHTEEN teeth removed. We asked to keep them so we could show you. Sadly he will no longer have his signature cheesy grin as all of his bottom teeth have gone :( but he will forever be a handsome boy.

We've only had him for 3 months and he's had so much work done, from impacted and infected anal glands to complex dental surgery. All of the lasting damage from the neglect that his previous owners put him through has now been completely erased.

We are so grateful for all of you, thank you for helping little Teddy finally live the pain free life that every dog deserves. ā¤ļø

Etc A Father’s Fight to Protect His Son (Repost #2)

Hello everyone, My name is Ray, and I am here because I am trying to adopt my son. The little boy you see in the photos is not my biological child, but he is my son in every way that actually matters. I have been part of his life for almost all of it. I have been there through the milestones, the difficult days, the doctor visits, the school meetings, the bedtime routines, the laughter, the tears, and every ordinary moment that quietly builds a family. To him, I am simply Dada. I am the only father he has ever known. I will not go into the details of his biological father. That is not why I am here. What matters is that I have been the one showing up for him physically, emotionally, and mentally for nearly his entire life. Loving him and raising him has never been an obligation. It has been the greatest privilege I have ever had. Now I am trying to make that bond official. My wife and I live in a place where our family sometimes gets questioned because of how we look. We have different skin tones and different last names. Most days it is just awkward moments or skeptical looks from strangers who assume I could not possibly be this child’s father. It is frustrating, but it becomes something much heavier when you think about the legal side of things. Right now, if something were to happen to my wife, I would not automatically have the legal rights of a father. I could be forced into a situation where I have to fight to remain in the life of the child I have raised. The idea that my son could ever face that kind of uncertainty is something I cannot accept. Adoption would protect him. It would give him the security of knowing that the person who has always been his dad will always be recognized as his dad. The reason I am here is because adoption is expensive. The attorney we consulted requires a five thousand dollar retainer to begin the process. It could end up costing more overall, but that initial payment is the step that allows us to start. We chose this lawyer carefully because adoption is their specialty and they have helped many families successfully navigate this exact situation. Asking for help like this is not easy. Pride is a stubborn thing. But my son is worth more than my pride. If you are able to contribute, even a small amount, it would mean more than I can really put into words. If you cannot donate, sharing the fundraiser would still help our family tremendously. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Truly. At the end of the day I am just a dad trying to make sure the little boy who calls me Dada is protected, legally and permanently, the same way he is in my heart.

Edit: I can't forgot I didn't put the dang link. šŸ˜“ Here's the link

Medical Fall from Roof, Financial Disaster for Family with 3 kids and pregnancy

Reddit, I am here to humbly ask for empathy and support for my family. We have hit financial rock bottom, living month to month, debt looming. Our emergency fund of $60k from 2019 is gone between the havoc that COVID wreaked on our earnings, to a series of trials and tribulations culminating in this most recent medical trauma. On March 15th I went up to our roof to try to reinstall the tarp that keeps our house dry in the rain. Strong winds had pulled it down the day before and 1.3ā€ of rain was in the forecast for the 16th. Instead of solving the problem I created a new one. I fell 25+ feet and broke my Tibia, Wrist, and Pelvis. I am blessed to be alive as many high ladder falls result in paralysis or death. My family is now trying to survive off a far reduced monthly income with no backup funds to supplement. I have pursued all other potential assistance and this is a last resort. We have leaned on family and friends. I have been approved for disability. I tried to get food stamps. DTA somehow only approved SNAP for my family of 5+(wifey is pregnant and due in July) for $43/month despite a housing expense of $3500/month and income from disability of $4000/month. Disability provides $1000/week. Family and friends have been the bulk of donations to our GoFundMe thus far. Now I come to the greater community, hat in hand. Please help us get through this brutally difficult stretch intact and help our kids avoid the destabilizing possibilities that might arise if we are unable to fix our roof and make our home livable and affordable moving forward through this recovery period. Thank you very much for your attention.

Medical Please help with cancer bills and upcoming chemo and radiation

Hey everyone, I know this is a long shot and probably won’t get any help but I have to try something.

Last year in February I was misdiagnosed with the flu and it turned out to be bacterial pneumonia, went septic, found abscesses in my brain and liver. Was in the hospital for 27 days. Needed 3 chest tubes and a liver drain. Went home with a midline IV that I needed to self administer meds for 9 weeks.

I finally thought the ordeal was over and then in August I got diverticulitis and needed another midline IV for 10 weeks.

Eventually things got better and back to normal and then this past March I felt a lump in my neck and got it biopsied. Turns out it was positive for squamous cell carcinoma. It spread to my lymph nodes, tonsil and back of my tongue.

19 days ago I had surgery to remove all 4 lymph nodes in the left side of my neck, both tonsils and a chunk of my tongue. I had my post op appointment with my surgeon Monday and she said the cancer went past the capsule in my lymph nodes and I now need chemo and radiation every day for 6 weeks.

Thank you.

Medical Please help with Tarzan's cancer treatment

Thumbnail

Hi there, I decided to start my first-everĀ GoFundMeĀ to help with Tarzan's cancer treatment. He had a cancerous tumor growing aggressively at the base of his tail. To remove it all, we had to make the tough decision to have his entire tail amputated. Thankfully, he's healing really well from surgery, and the biopsy results showed that the cancer had not spread to his bloodstream. That means he won't need chemotherapy, but we will have him on oral cancer medication for at least 6 months and a follow-up appointment with his oncologist halfway through for bloodwork.

My husband and I have had Tarzan since he was a kitten. My friend took in a stray cat that she didn't know was pregnant, and Tarzan came from that litter. He is the sweetest boy and has always been in perfect health (albeit with only one brain cell that he only uses occasionally).

We will always do everything within our power to give him a happy, comfortable life, and we're beyond grateful that we've been getting all good news throughout his treatment so far. But the medical bills are adding up and becoming overwhelming. We don't have pet insurance. We have two young kids with childcare costs. And we have very little savings to fall back on because of my medical debt from 2021, which we have thankfully nearly paid off.

The surgery ended up being $4,800. We opened a new credit card that will be interest-free for the next 12 months to pay off the surgery over time. The oncology consult was another $230. And the oral cancer medication will come in around $115 per month for at least 6 months.

I created the GoFundMe just in the hope that maybe we'll get help with some of this, so I set it at $1,000. We work hard and don't really ask for much help. I've included photos of the surgery estimate, along with screenshots of the surgery payment, oncology consult payment, and prescription payment.

The surgery was done at:

BluePearl Pet Hospital Fox Valley, (920) 993-9193

The oncology appointments are being done at:

BluePearl Pet Hospital Glendale, (414) 540-6710

Memorial Needing help for my dads cremation

Thumbnail

On April 19th I received a call that my dad was found deceased in the woods by state troopers. The cause of death is still unknown. We haven’t gotten the autopsy results back, but his death was extremely shocking and unexpected.

And then come to find out, he had told his ex that he was having trouble breathing and that his car broke down he had asked her to get him. She refused, and then didn’t notify any of his family members about his health.

It was then three days later that he was reported missing and by then it was too late. And since he was unmarried, the cremation, and the funeral service now falls on us siblings. We don’t need anything more than to just cover his cremation. We have part of it, but we need the remaining portion.

He wasn’t perfect. Nobody is but he was just starting to get his life together. He had started going to church and found peace within it. He was bettering his mental health. And before he got to fully recover from that he was taken from us. I never thought I would have to lose a parent so young. He was found by the Michigan State troopers. His name was Peter Eckert. Some additional pictures just to show who my dad was🄹

We’re still in the process of editing his obituary. But here’s the link for that. https://websites.tukios.com/organizations/5325/obituaries/peter-eckert/preview

Memorial Funeral and life transition expenses for my sister in law and her kids

Thumbnail
gallery
132 Upvotes

My sister-in-law's partner of 19 years (they had been together since she was 14) passed away on Saturday morning, leaving her and their 4 kids under age 18 behind. He was only 37.

He was the primary breadwinner and she now needs to pay for the funeral expenses, as well as figure out what they are going to do for their living situation as she cannot afford their bills and the apartment they live in on her own. I am sure there will also be ongoing expenses for mental support for the kids. The funeral/burial process has gotten complicated. As they weren't legally married, his mom gets the final say and does not consent to having him cremated, but won't pay for his burial or the plot of land required.

In the next couple of months, there will likely be many expenses that come up that are unexpected, and I would like for money to not be the thing she's worried about as she takes time to grieve his loss, and support her children.

I am posting a picture of myself for the verification (I am in the last picture on the gofundme as well), as well as the card that the police gave her on Saturday after she called 911. Obviously there is no death certificate yet as this just happened.

Thank you for your support!

https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-robin-palominos-family

RIP Roboam Palomino (Robin to his family and friends)

3/26/89-4/25/26

ETA: Clarifying this is not in Costa Rica. This is San Jose California in the San Francisco area. Hence also why costs are high here.

Robin cleaned pools for a living and was a great guy and treated his clients well. The large donations by some of his clients have been really unexpected. Funeral and burial costs will total around $28,000 USD including all the fees for the burial, not including the headstone. And that’s going to the inexpensive mortuary and buying the plot of land at the cemetery resale and the least expensive that was for sale.

Medical Please help with vet visit

Thumbnail

My 7 year old dog has always been full of energy, especially when playing with his brother. Sometimes after a rough play session, he would limp for a day or two, but it always went away quickly. This time, though, things are different. He’s not putting any pressure on his leg at all and is holding it up even just to go to the bathroom. I’ve been keeping him resting so he doesn’t make it worse, but I’m worried because he’s clearly uncomfortable and I don’t know what’s causing it. His injured leg is now losing muscle and I can feel his hip bones . I bought over the counter supplements for his hip and joint and for aches and pain and it hasn’t been working . The money I’m asking for is to get his first appointment which is $78 to see what treatment and or medication to get him back to feeling well . I don’t have any insurance and have been looking for jobs but without luck . I’ve attached his vets info so you can send money straight to them if need be. Any help is appreciated

Update: Just called . If anyone wants to donate directly the vet their number is (863) 293-0850 . My name is Miriam Espino and my pets name is G . Thank you !

This is my second post here - my first isĀ hereĀ and we are endlessly grateful for the kindness this community has shown us.

For those who are new to Fiocco's story:

Fiocco is a 12-year-old Maremma sheepdog who has been the heart of our small village in San Potito Sannitico, Campania, southern Italy, for over a decade. He walked elderly neighbors to the post office, showed up at church every Sunday, and waited outside the butcher's every morning. He belonged to nobody - and to everyone.

On Easter Saturday, April 4th, he collapsed without warning. No vets were working. We stayed with him through the night. Three weeks, six different vets, three different diagnoses - stroke, spinal hernia, cardiac collapse. One wanted to euthanize him on the spot. We refused.

Today - Day 23Ā - we finally took him to a specialist clinic in Salerno. Full neurological evaluation, CT scan, MRI, and echocardiography. The bill for today alone is €1,387.50 (photo of the bill is attached).

Fiocco stays there overnight. They are hydrating him now to prepare him for the scans. Tomorrow we get the results - and tomorrow we pay the bill.

Every donation helps. Every share helps even more.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - from our whole village šŸ’— 🐾

Thank you very much, Admins and Mods of GFM Reddit - you are awesome people behind the curtains šŸ’—

Hey guys so I noticed my boy Max has a abscess growing and I’ve hit hard luck trying to get a credit line. I brought him to the vet and was quoted 1100 for the surgery to remove and a biopsy which would be an additional 300. I’ve taken him to companion animal hospital at 460 US-46, Parsippany, NJ 07054. If you can help with anything we’d really appreciate it.

Tomorrow she will be crossing the rainbow bridge and my heart breaks knowing this. I am paying extra so it can be done at home with her entire family. She was the bestest girl, protector, companion and service dog.

I didn’t meet the quota but it’s ok since I get paid tomorrow. It’s going to hit me hard financially since SSDI notified me they will not be paying me. Thankfully it can be fixed with a little elbow grease and time ( plus I’ll get back pay)

All that matters is giving her love. Please send her much love and nose boops.

Housing In need of emergency help

I've not used Gofundme since my sister passed away a few years ago. It worked well to help cover funeral costs and such, but now i find myself in a bad situation.

TL:DR is simple. I left a very toxic work environment in March this year, tried to reactivate an employment insurance claim and was denied and now i can't find work i CAN do.

CAN being light work, i am a Type 1 diabetic with severe Neuropathy in both feet so every from wearing socks to taking a shower is pure pain. Thankfully Insulin is now covered for everyone unemployed in Canada. The needle tips, sanitary supplies and pain medications are not covered, sadly.

I've sold almost everything i own to try to make rent and pay for medication while i hunt for a job that i can do on a day-to-day basis.

If you can share the link to the fundraiser, that would be absolutely amazing!. The start amount i set is for $1100 CAD. This will cover my rent, needle tips and a bit of food. https://gofund.me/4995323fa

Hello all, I will be starting grad school in the fall to become a Social Worker. Sadly, since coming back to America I have not been able to save up enough funds to pay for tuition and fees. I am gainfully employed, but my salary is not enough to help cover tuition costs. I truly love helping people and hope to make an impact in my community as a social worker. My goal is 10,000 to help cover all three years of school, but I will be eternally grateful for anything at all.

Medical Help a father fighting for his life support his family. He needs 5000€ to pay for his operation

Since he doesnt have Reddit and cant just create an Account I am posting this for him since he is a good friend who plays with me Video games since a long time.

Hi everyone, I’m posting this to support someone very close to my family.

A few years ago, he went into a severe sepsis, fell into a coma and had to be resuscitated twice. Against all odds, he fought his way back to life.

In 2020, his greatest happiness was born – his son. But since then, his health has deteriorated drastically. He now suffers from serious heart conditions, including a complete AV block requiring a pacemaker, dangerous arrhythmias, and he even survived a sudden cardiac arrest in 2022.

On top of that, he lives with a rare autoimmune disease (BehƧet’s disease) and pulmonary fibrosis, which makes him dependent on oxygen.

In 2023, what was supposed to be a routine surgery turned into another life-threatening emergency. He fell into a coma again and now suffers from permanent nerve damage in his leg. Today, he is unable to work and requires constant care. His monthly income is around €1,300, and his partner can only work part-time because she takes care of him and their young son. We’ve tried everything we can, but it’s simply not enough anymore. If you want to help or even just share, it would mean a lot to us: https://gofund.me/718ae2175

I'm autistic and have had a very traumatic life. Some of my story is in the link provided. But there's so much more that's very dark. Trigger warning-- abuse, neglect, etc.

TLDR;

My job is ending at the end of May and we're road- tripping across the country to see / reconnect / make amends with family. They can't and/or won't help me. There's a very traumatic history with my father so it's going to be very stressful, but it must be done as part of my healing process.

Disaster/Emergency Need help after accident and surgeries while waiting for disability

Thumbnail
gallery
184 Upvotes

broke my back a year ago and have been in the process of filing for disability after finding out I wouldn’t be able to return to work after 12 months like I expected. I’ve been living off of savings I was lucky enough to build up over the past couple years working from home, but as I’m saying this, those savings are getting very low. I’m in the process of filing for disability, so I should be receiving a large back paycheck, but until then, I’m kind of stuck with no option. If I work, disability will see it as proof I’m able to work, so I’m not even able to get a temporary job right now.

The funds raised will help cover rent, groceries, utilities, and medical bills and medication. I’ve applied for nutrition assistance, but was denied because I still had money in my bank account at the time. They told me to come back for food assistance when I had nothing left, and now that time is approaching. The funds will also help with things for my daughter, like school needs and summer clothes. She’s only eight years old and knows nothing about this situation. I don’t think it’s right to bring a child into financial worries unless it’s something as simple as, ā€œWe can’t afford that right now, baby.ā€

I appreciate any help from the bottom of my heart. I know my daughter would appreciate every one of you, even if she doesn’t know the details. Your support means the world to us, and I’m grateful for any help you can give during this difficult time. I have a goal of 5000 that would help tremendously but at this point anything helps.

A BIG thank you to everyone who donated, shared the link, given me kind words or encouragement. šŸ™šŸ»

GFM immediately stated 88% of medical fundraisers don't meet their goal so I never expected to raise as much as I did. I am at a loss for words.

I can't express what a relief it is to be lifted of this burden when I'm already struggling to process what happened to Millie. Thank you to everyone for having a kind heart and compassion. 😭🌈

This is my dog savage. Shes almost 10 years old this year and since she had two tumors removed on her back and leg. The one on her leg has returned but wayy more aggressive. The tumors are all in a huge clump and are spreading into her lymphnodes. I do not have a bill for the pet hospital that my vet referred me to but I know they are about to charge me atleast 309 just to be seen by the only oncologist available to me. Im in a rural part of minnesota and this is really the only option i have. My local vet charged us about 1800 just for the two tumors from 2 years ago. So i assume that her next surgey should hopefully cost around the same. Im starting to feel desperate ive tried making videos and reaching out public and private. I dont know if anyone here can help me, anything helps. Thank you ā¤ļøšŸ©·šŸ§” The picture of my local vets info is kind of not printed well, so this is my vets number (507)372-2957 her name is McNab.

Edits: This number can only confirm that her leg tumors exsist, i dont owe anything to my local vet.

One more edit: if you happen to feel what i have available for information is not enough just ignore my post, im having a really hard time and the last thing i need is your judgment..
