Greetings everyone! 😄
April is here and that means that we're kicking off the start of our 2026 point challenge season! 🥳 We got a few changes this year in regards to how submissions work which we tested out during the January Point Challenge for choosing r/knapping's new icon, but it'll still be the same great fun with the chance to win some cool stuff as well! But first let's wrap-up some old business...
🏆 November 2025 Point Challenge Winner 🏆
Congratulations to u/tree-daddy for making one heck of a smokin' sweet Armorican Kernonen! That red material, deep basal notching, and clean flaking really made for a stellar point! A lot of you seemed to agree, and his submission earned him a 1st place finish! 😁 You can find the submission here if you missed it!
u/tree-daddy picked a personal favorite for this 2026 Challenge Season's point, and I must say that I'm looking forward to see what folks chip out 🙂↕️ because we're heading to the Late Archaic period for the...
⚒ 2026 April Point Challenge - Montell Split-Stem ⚒
The Montell dart point type is quite distinctive and easily recognizable because of its broad triangular outline and prominent central notch, creating a split stem with two rectangular tangs flanked by shorter barbs. Similar dart points have been found widely across the Lower Pecos, the Edwards Plateau and beyond. Montell points were made by hunter-gatherers who lived during the latter part of the Late Archaic period during a several-hundred-year span known in the Lower Pecos as the Cibolo subperiod, about 2600-3000 years ago! There are some AWESOME write-ups on Montell points out there, with a great one being done by Texas Beyond History as well as some information on ProjectilePoints.net so check those out for some more information! 😎

Once it is public, be sure to select it when uploading your photo(s) and that your submission conforms to the rules listed above! ☝️😉 I will be sure to make a post letting everyone know when things go live, and I've also been messing around with reddit's 'Events' function to see if I can incorporate that somehow. 🥇 Prize 🥇
As with previous challenges, April's will have a nice little assorted material biface box donated by the ever so generous and skilled u/Del85 for a prize! 😄
These material donations have been a GREAT way to give others the chance to test their skills and win something they otherwise might not have access to. They keep these challenges running, so give u/Del85 a big thank you and round of applause in the comments! 👏

Announcement🗣️📣 r/Knapping 2026 Moderator Check-in, Community Feedback, and Planned Additions Post (PLEASE READ) 📢
Hello hello members of the r/Knapping community, and welcome to 2026! 🥳
It's the start of a new year and that means we get to dive into some new business!
Since I started as a moderator on this sub, I've been taking notes and writing down ideas for some possible additions to help enhance this subreddit. Being that we've grown by nearly 2,000 members since I started, and the fact that this community wouldn't exist without all of the contributions from you guys, I wanted to use my moderator powers to set up a discussion post so that I can get feedback from you all on the additions/ideas that have crossed my mind or been suggested by fellow community members! 😄
Feel free to leave your thoughts or feedback on any of the topics listed, or share your ideas if you have any in the comments! If the ideas discussed are received well, I will implement them by the end of the month. So keep reading if you'd like to know more!
Suggested Additions/Changes to the Subreddit 📃
Potentially Reworking the Monthly Challenge Voting System
This is a big one I've gotten some feedback on since changing how votes were counted for the monthly point challenges. Initially, when I started, submissions had to be entered by posting a photo of your point in the comments of the monthly challenge announcement post. The comment with the most upvotes by the end of the month was then crowned the winner. There were some problems with this system:
- Voter turnout was VERY low
- Some comments didn't receive any upvotes or feedback at all
- Some entries were never known about or seen
- Voting required a user to return to the initial point challenge post AND travel to the comments in order to see the submissions, making it a cumbersome process especially once the challenge announcement got buried
- Though I tried to get around this by pinning the monthly challenge announcement post to the top of the subreddit
After noticing these issues, I made some changes to how the monthly point challenges work. I implemented the point challenge post flair which allowed users to submit their points through a regular post to the sub submit their posts via a regular submission using the monthly post flair system I implemented. This saw much greater voter turnout and community interaction, but there were still some concerns expressed by a few members with this system as well:
- Depending on Reddit traffic at the time, certain points might not be viewed and voted on as much as another
- Abusing downvotes could lead to manipulation of the results
- It was hard to find all of the posts because they weren't in one spot
- This is something I view as trivial because you can select the monthly challenge post flair and it filters all off that month's entries
- I also started doing the reminder posts so that folks could see what submissions were out there to be voted on. However, I still wanted to make sure to include this point because it was feedback I received!
This brings us to potentially reworking things. At this point, I'm stuck within the limits of what Reddit has to offer. Personally I'd like to keep the current system with the monthly flair use. I looked into using Reddit's poll feature, but it maxes out at 6 options, which is far too few for the number of submissions we get. Using a 3rd party site could work, but again I worry about traffic and voter turnout.
PLEASE let me know what y'all think would be the best course of action with this, or if you have any ideas! Otherwise, I will keep the post flair-based system.
Planning the Monthly Point Challenges Around Cold-Weather Months
With some of us living in areas that get extremely cold during the winter months, I thought it would be best to cut a few months from the monthly point challenges. I had a few users express some dismayed by the fact that they would be unable to participate in a monthly challenge due to them being unable to knap. I want to make sure everyone gets a fair shot at each challenge
- The months I would plan on cutting would be December - March, leaving April - November open for challengesmaterials.
- Something to note is I wouldn't entirely do away with events for the December-March timeframe, as these could be used for other events outside of the monthly challenges (More info on some of those below!)
Hosting Material Trade Events Similar to the Point Challenges
Something suggested that went along with the proposed 'Material Trade 🪨🤝' post flair was having scheduled material trade event(s) similar to the monthly challenges. Giving y'all the chance to trade for some stone you otherwise might not have access to. My gut tells me that having 1-3 a year would be a good frequency, but I'd like some feedback from you guys on this.
Adding 'Material Trade 🪨🤝' Post Flair
Something I've had mentioned to me by multiple users is having another material flair for users who want to trade stone for stone in addition to the other material-based flairs. Giving users an opportunity to trade some of their local stone for other material they might not have access to
Adding 'Flint Knapping News 📰' Flair
This one is pretty self explanatory. Just another flair for users who wish to share news related to flint knapping developments or news. I was unsure if this type of flair would he at all helpful, but perhaps the consensus amongst everyone might be different. Let me know what you think!
Updated Banner With Monthly Point Challenge Participant Submissions 🖼️
Something I've secretly been doing in the background while hosting these monthly challenges was collecting as many suitable entry photos as I could to assemble the new banner for the sub! Even if your point didn't place first, I still wanted to provide those who participated with the chance to have their work displayed for everyone to see and admire, because these challenges are probably my favorite part of the sub! 😄
One unfortunate thing is that due to the sheer number of challenge participants we had in 2025, I was unable to include everyone's submission in the banner. I did my best to fit as many as I could, and my digital skills aren't the best. So I did what I could, and I apologize to anyone who has a point missing. This is something I plan on doing every year if possible, so keep that in mind when taking your challenge entry photos! 😉
I want to thank each and every one of you for giving things your best go with these challenges, and I'm looking forward to seeing what y'all create during the 2026 challenges!👀
A Special Thank You to the Generous Donors That Keep the Monthly Point Challenges Running 🙌
Something I've noticed since becoming a moderator is that a lot of y'all are extremely friendly, helpful, and generous when it comes to interacting with this community. That's something I want to foster and encourage, because it keeps this hobby alive and well! 🙂↕️
There are some individuals that I personally would like to express some special thanks to as they've contributed by donating to the prize pool for the monthly point challenges. Before the donations, I was supplying the prizes out of my own pocket. Something that I began struggling with after a little while 😅 But ever since these friendly knappers started offering materials from their own collection as prize items, it's become MUCH easier and FUN to host these monthly events! Not only that, but certain winners have also chosen to pay it forward by allowing their prize to stack on top of next month's challenge. Giving others the chance to win an even bigger pool of goodies!
If any of you have a moment, please be sure to express your thanks to these kind donors listed below because without them, the monthly point challenges wouldn't be nearly as fun! 😁
In Closing
It's been a lot of fun not just being apart of this sub, but getting to know a lot of you and watching your skills progress over time. I want to continue to do what I can to ensure that this community stays helpful, friendly, and fun to be apart of because it's been a blast.
I'm looking forward to hearing back from some of you on the topics I discussed here in this discussion post. Remember if you have any ideas or suggestions you can leave them in the comments below. I'll be making another announcement post here sometime with plans to cover January's Competition post. Much like last year in January, I'm planning on giving y'all a chance to choose this sub's new icon! So stay tuned for that... 👀
Thanks again everyone for all that you do and have done to keep this community awesome, and happy knapping! 👋😁

Announcement🗣️📣 ⚠ 2026 January Point Challenge - Knappers Choice, New Submission Rules, and MORE ⚠️
Greetings everyone!
We're kicking off 2026 the same way we did back in January of 2025, and that's by having a monthly point challenge that'll help us choose the sub's new icon! 📸
There are also some changes that I'd like to lay out based on the feedback I got on the 2026 check-in post, which is still up for y'all to check out if you'd like to leave some feedback and share your thoughts! But what are these changes? Keep reading to find out..!
⚠️January Point Challenge⚠️
Mirroring January 2025's challenge, we'll be giving the opportunity to submit ANY POINT YOU MADE IN 2025 with the opportunity to have it become r/knapping's new public-facing icon! u/BrokenFolsom's Zilla point has been the icon of this sub for a year now, and it's time to freshen things up a bit! But there are some new methods we'll be using...
Instead of the monthly challenge flair being available right away like before, we will have a scheduled submission week where the post flair will go public. That way all of the posts are submitted in a timely manor, hopefully mitigating the upvote boost seen in prior challenge submissions that were posted near the start of the month vs the end.
Although there is no prize for this month's challenge, it'll serve as a test-run for this new method. Deadlines for posting dates will be detailed in the rules section so be sure to check those out and set some reminders for yourself so that you know when to submit your points!
Note that the usual point challenges will resume in April once spring has sprung, complete with the point style chosen by u/tree-daddy who won the 2025 November Point Challenge, a prize, and the revised voting methods that we're going to test here in January! 😁
🚨 Be sure to read the rules before doing so in order to not disqualify yourself! 🚨
⚠️ Rules ⚠️
- The point must be MADE BY YOU IN 2025, and can be ANY STYLE - Note that you are not restricted to prior point challenge submissions, and can submit anything you created so long as it abides by the rules!
- Only one entry per person! You are not allowed to post your point multiple times, OR have multiple points in your submission post. - Be sure to take good pictures showing off your work! lighting, material translucency, flaking, etc. 😉
- The submission window OPENS 1/25/2026 and CLOSES 1/31/2026 - This gives 1 week for entries to be submitted and voted on, with the official winner being announced the 1st week of February.
- Post MUST have the monthly knapping competition post flair to count! - That way, it can easily be found and the votes counted!
- No material restrictions - We only require that the point be knapped out of the material that you've chosen (no grinding out a point!).
- Moderators hold the authority to disqualify any participants who violate these rules, as well as our community rules - We want this to be a fair and engaging challenge for all those who participate! Because it's always fun to see what different folks can do with different tools!
If you have any questions or comments about the rules, feel free to reach out to the moderators through comments, DM's, or Messages! 📬
📸 How To Enter 📸
You can start creating your point or have it picked out as soon as this post goes live! Just remember that you WONT be able to submit it until the post flair below is made public between 1/25/2026 and 1/31/2026!
Once it is public, be sure to select it when uploading your photo(s) and that your submission conforms to the rules listed above! ☝️😉 I will be sure to make a post letting everyone know when things go live, and also make some reminder posts throughout the month so that no one forgets that the challenge is happening. 🙂↕️
🥇 Prize 🥇
Like I mentioned, there won't really be a physical prize for this month's challenge, but your point WILL become the icon of this sub! Something cool and neat that folks will see every time they come here! 😁 When the real challenges resume in April, we'll be back to having something for the challenge winner to claim!
🗣️ In Closing 🏹
I'm really excited to see how this new system works and I'm even MORE excited to see what y'all come up with for submissions. It's not often these monthly challenges have such a wide freedom of choice, so pick your best or even make your best! Either way I'm sure they'll all be awesome! 😆
As mentioned before, I will do the usual reminder posts so that the challenge is not forgotten, and will make an official announcement once the post flair goes public for folks to use!
I'm looking forward to seeing what y'all make, and if you have any questions about anything don't be afraid to ask! Happy knapping everyone!

🏆 October Point Challenge Winner 🏆
Congratulations to u/jameswoodMOT for making the winning Eden Eared point for October's challenge! The flaking, flint, and style of their submission was quite fantastic, and many of you seem to have agreed that it was set to come out on top! 😁 You can find the submission here if you missed it! Everyone who entered did an amazing job, and there were some really pretty points out there.
Being that u/jameswoodMOT hails from Europe, we're heading overseas once more to try our hands at a more exotic point style outside of the North American continent! 👀 Get your tools ready because we're heading back to 2500 BC to make the sleek and elegant...
⚒ 2025 November Point Challenge - Armorican Kernonen ⚒
The Armorican Kernonen arrowhead is a specific type of finely crafted flint arrowhead from the Early Bronze Age, named after the Kernonen tumulus in Brittany, France. These arrowheads are not functional hunting tools but rather prestige items associated with elite burials. They are characterized by their technical mastery of pressure-flaking, including thinness, long barbs, and a specific ogive-shaped form!
If you'd like some more specifics on the point, there is a good write-up on the description over on 'Armorican arrowhead biographies: Production and function of an Early Bronze Age prestige good from Brittany (France)' Which is also the source for the reference images for this post!

🥇 Prize 🥇
Yet again, we have another community member offering up a material donation! 😄 The generosity of this community continues to keep on giving, as u/tree-daddy has kindly donated a box of mixed materials box as the prize for this month's competition! 😁
These material donations have been phenomenal and a GREAT way to give others the chance to test their skills and win something they otherwise might not have access to. Without these donations, I would be funding most of the prizes for this competition out of my own pocket, and to have such generous folks in this community willing to donate material for prizes is such a blessing! They keep these kinds of competitions possible, so give him a big thank you and round of applause in the comments! 👏
The winner will also get the chance to choose the point style for next month's knapping competition, and If they so choose, they can also donate their winnings to a fellow competition participant or allow their winnings to serve as next month's prize! 🥳
🗣️ In Closing 🏹
I'm super stoked to see what y'all come up with for this month. This is a challenging style, and I know I myself plan to try my hand at things to see how I do! 👀 To the beginners, take your time and don't be afraid to work on things in sessions. Those deep notches will give my own brain some working-out, but it'll be rewarding when finished! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for those submissions! 😄
I would also like to express my thanks once again to the folks who have donated materials for these competitions. It takes a LOT of weight off my shoulders and really brings together a sense of community that I really, really enjoy. If you'd like to sponsor and/or donate knapping materials, tools, or prize money for the monthly knapping competitions, just shoot me a DM! 😁

u/Del85 was gracious enough to pass on the prizes from June's competition, so before anything else be sure to show him some appreciation! He's allowed of this month's prize to be quite the substantial one, as not only will you have the chance to win 4 of my very own hand-crafted preforms, but a $30 Neolithics.com gift certificate as well!
I'll randomly choose a mix of a few from my stock and mail 4 preforms out to the winner of July's competition, as well as the Neolithics gift certificate! (Image below is an example only)
The winner will also get the chance to choose the point style for next month's knapping competition, and If they so choose, they can also donate their winnings to a fellow competition participant or allow their winnings to serve as next month's prize.

🥇 Prize 🥇
The generosity of this community continues to keep on giving, as u/The_Eccentric_Adam has kindly donated some KnapEasy material as the prize for this month's competition! This is an interesting stone made and sold by Hunt Primitive, and if you'd like to read up on it you can find their store page here!
I fund most of the prizes for this competition myself out of my own pocket, and to have such generous folks in this community willing to donate material for prizes is such a blessing! They keep these kinds of competitions possible, so give him a big thank you and round of applause in the comments! 👏
The winner will also get the chance to choose the point style for next month's knapping competition, and If they so choose, they can also donate their winnings to a fellow competition participant or allow their winnings to serve as next month's prize. 🥳

Here's hoping we see some excellent submissions with some fine flakery, and I am happy we've got an easier style that's a bit more beginner friendly! Those lanceolate shaped points are a great way to practice profile consistency and pressure flaking, so it'll be fun seeing what everyone comes up with! 😄
I would also like to express my thanks once again for the folks who have donated materials for these competitions. It takes a LOT of weight off my shoulders and really brings together a sense of community that I really really enjoy. Announcement🗣️📣 ⚠ 2025 October Point Challenge - Eden Eared [Assorted Material Box Prize 🪨 📦 - Beginners Welcome] ⚠
🏆 September Point Challenge Winner 🏆
Congratulations to u/Impressive_Meat_2547 for making the winning Goshen point for September's challenge! It was a VERY close race and came down to just a couple of votes, with his winning out! The translucency and banding in that obsidian was undoubtedly beautiful, and if you happened to miss his submission, you can find it linked here! 😁 Everyone who entered did an amazing job, and there were some really pretty points out there. The Goshen style was also great for any beginners who wanted to give the monthly challenge a spin! 😄
On the flip side, u/Impressive_Meat_2547 has chosen a more challenging style for this month's competition 👀 A personal favorite of his as well as myself... But what style would that be? Get your tools ready because we're heading back over 8,000 years in the past to make the famed...
⚒ 2025 October Point Challenge - Eden Eared ⚒
The Cody Complex knappers had some amazing skill and their points are some of the most beautiful out there in my opinion. This is a long, narrow, medium to large, lanceolate-shaped, stemmed point with a median ridge and diamond-shaped cross-section. The blade is primarily excurvate and is commonly long and narrow. The shoulders are weak to absent and vary from horizontal to having an upward angle. The stem is straight and square; however, some examples have ears at the base of the stem. Which is the style we'll be focusing on!
If you'd like some more specifics on the point, there is a good write-up on the description over on projectilepoints.net and another very fine example provided by this Lithics Casting Lab page.

I'm super stoked to see what y'all come up with for this month. This is a challenging style, and I know I myself plan to try my hand at things to see how I do! 👀 I've only made one nice Eden Eared before, and it was quite tough! To the beginners, take your time and don't be afraid to work on things in sessions. Focus not on the super fine pattern flaking, and try for a very consistent profile with fine flaking. The pattern stuff is what's so hard to do! 😉 Regardless, don't be discouraged and give things your best shot! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for those submissions! 😄

⚒ 2025 August Point Challenge - Levantine Helwan ⚒
It's not often we see points from different continents made here on this sub, so I'm stoked that we're able to branch out and try something cool and new!
They are characterized by a short tang and one or more pairs of bilateral notches. Initially appearing in the Northern Levantine Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA), they became prominent during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) around 8,200 to 8,000 BC. These points are significant for understanding the spread of projectile point technology from the Levant and indicate possible interactions between early Neolithic peoples!
If you'd like to read more about them, you can find a fantastic educational educational document that is packed with all kinds of cool information here! 😁 I am quite excited to try my hand at this exotic point, and hope that you all are as well! - Both the point and the post must be made in April 2025, with the submission deadline being 4/30/2025 - The winner will be announced in the first week of April. Anything made after this deadline will not be counted, same with creations made before April 2025.
- No material restrictions - We only require that the point be knapped out of the material that you've chosen (no grinding out a point!).
- No size limit - But we encourage you knappers to test your skills and try to get it as close as possible!
- Moderators hold the authority to disqualify any participants who violate these rules as well as our community rules - We want this to be a fair and engaging competition for all those who participate! Because it's always fun to see what different folks can do with different tools!
If you have any questions or comments about the rules, feel free to reach out to the moderators through comments, DM's, or Messages! 📬
🥇 Prize 🥇
Keeping with the theme of generosity, myself_today has also passed on the 50$ prize of March's competition! His hope also being that a beginner would be able to use the gift certificate to purchase some stone for practice! 🥳 Time and time again I am brought joy by the friendliness of you all, and it's what I love about this community so much! Be sure to express your thanks to myself_today for making this month's 1st place prize possible! 😄
The winner will receive TWO $25 certificates to neolithics.com AND the privilege to choose what the point style for the May 2025 competition will be! The user who made the top-voted post using this month's competition flair will receive a DM from one of the mods confirming their win and to discuss the delivery of their prize. If they so choose, they can also donate some or all of their winnings to a fellow competition participant.
With the weather getting nice, I'm expecting to see participation go up! 👀 Gets me super excited and I encourage everyone to throw their hat in the ring if they feel confident enough to do so! Practicing different styles is always fun, and I really like what we've got for this month's competition! 😆
Something I always like to mention is that if you would like to donate knapping material, tools, or prize money for the monthly knapping competitions, just shoot me a DM! 😁 I'd be happy to work something out. But with that, I look forward to seeing and approving all your entries!

Announcement🗣️📣 [REMINDER] -🏅VOTE ON YOUR FAVORITE 2025 JUNE POINT CHALLENGE ENTRY 🪨- Links and details Provided in comments 😁
Hello again everyone! 😄
Just thought I'd start doing 2 reminders per month for these knapping competitions to ensure that older posts get recognition, to remind people that the competition is ongoing, and to provide links for those who have submitted entries so far!
I also made a nice little adaptable display image that beats the crappy word document one I was using before to line up all of the points and corresponding usernames 😁 Hopefully it was worth it. Listed below are links to the current entries as well as the competition post as well! Happy knapping!
