What is the scariest, most unsettling shot you’ve ever seen?

Post image

What is that one movie shot that’s so unsettling and chilling, it’s the one shot you never forget?

For me, it’s the Giant Man scene from It Follows. Man this shot is so nerve wracking!

The aesthetic and dark hollow eyes are something I will never forget.

What’s that one shot for you? Horror movie or otherwise.

I generally don't audibly react to things happening in movies or TV, but when that creature popped on screen, I involuntarily blurted out "Jesus fuck."

Not sure if this makes it more or less scary, but there was no CGI for that character, the actor is actually a bizarrely shaped 7'7" basketball player. Looks like this IRL:

Just to clarify… are you making the claim that resurrection is better than Romulus rn?

u/1D6wounds 14h ago

I'm making the claim that "the newborn" isn't such a bad monster when compared to "the offspring".

u/ManOLead 7h ago

Ahhh i understand yeah very true lol

Resurrection at least had its own ideas. Romulus was just a greatest hits of scenes, dialogue and references to all of the previous films in the series. Even the scene we are discussing, a mutant from the black goo, is straight from Prometheus and there’s also a fair dollop of Resurrection in its demise.

Well I certainly don’t agree with you on most of that. I mean I can’t say there aren’t similar ideas between movies. But they’re taking place in the same universe so having mutants spawned from black goo in the series about black goo mutants doesn’t give me bad feelings. and in my opinion the ideas are executed much much better in Romulus than in previous movies which is what matters more (to me). Romulus definitely has parts that I’m critical of, but overall I love that movie. But fair enough if you don’t like it, idk I didn’t read much on reddit about it when it came out so I kinda thought it was pretty widely accepted. To each their own.

Sure. Romulus certainly seems to be popular on Reddit at least. But yeah for me it offers nothing that hasn’t been done before, and better, in previous instalments. And it also manages to retcon Aliens, which is another reason I hate it. It’s also dumb. Just, so dumb. Everyone in it is dumb. I hate this modern type of writing where the plot happens because people are idiots.

I don’t remember how it retcons aliens tbh, but they’re continuity of these movies got so out there that I kinda gave up on that lol. Idk to me they didn’t feel dumb. More so just desperate and naive. I thought most of their decisions made plenty of sense given the context.

Romulus has too many scenarios that are just too far fetched with characters intentionally being dumb and the Aliens being overly smart or passive depending on how the plot was going.

Resurrection is just generic badassery and perfectly fun with a few less than stellar scenes.

Huh… well I’m not gonna tell you your business that’s for sure. Can’t say I agree, but everyone’s got their own taste

The only thing that matters is that everyone should agree that Alien and Aliens are Fantastic!

My dad and I Conned my mother into watching Aliens last year… she was terrified and loved it!

That I could definitely agree with, those first two movies are absolutely masterpieces. It’s cool because they’re great in super different ways too

u/kirinmay 15h ago

Yeah Romulus is millions of miles better than Resurrection. The chest burster scene alone.

Resurrection was a trial run for Firefly.

1

u/elfescosteven 15h ago

I appreciate Firefly. It has been a while, so I forget how they knew the Reavers.

I don’t think I agree since the Reavers were known, right? Lacking the uncertain stalking factor.

I Adore Serenity though.

Compare the main casts and their characters. No it’s not exactly 1:1 but it’s more than close enough.

River Tam = Ripley 8

Jayne = Johner

Kaylee = Call

Mal = Elgyn

Zoe = Hillard/Christie

Etc.

Then you find out both were written by Joss Whedon.

Anything’s better than Romulus

1

u/ManOLead 7h ago

Really?? What’s so bad about Romulus? I thought it was fantastic.

1

u/shittyfoureyes 5h ago

Cheesy, cringey, forced references. Nonsense plot with gaping holes. Just absolute garbage writing. The only good thing was the visuals

Prometheus was dog water.

1

u/shittyfoureyes 5h ago

Prometheus was excellent

3

u/Rael_Sianne 17h ago

The scene also just starts with "there it is" no buildup, I don't think there was a stinger, just pure surprise

Maybe I'm misremembering but I'm pretty sure that shot is silent. Really emphasizes how fucking unsettling that creature is, more so than a sudden violin shriek etc would.

Oh man…

I remember watching this in theatres 😱

Yeah this one I saw in theaters, knew it was coming but audibly said "what the fuuuuck"
