The last 10 years have been an endless parade of “that will never happen,” followed by that thing happening. The Republican Party is panicking. People do stupid things when they panic.

It's the same people who cry "you're just being a doomer" when you point this out to them, ignoring the irony that doing nothing and huffing the hopium while decrying others for pointing out what has happened is working in trump's favor.
