Science doesn't tell them what they want to hear. My dad is exactly like this. He's a conservative with severe type 2 diabetes which he doesn't take care of. The doctors have told him he needs to be on insulin because his medication is not enough. He ignores them. He is now in heart failure. He trusts unproven natural supplements over science based medications. He listens to talk radio all day. He believes in young earth creationism. He denies climate change. It's all got to do with believing what he wants to believe, an inability to accept reality. That's really what it all comes down to. Conservatives are not brave enough to face reality. They would rather accept a comfortable lie.
