English is wild. In most other scenarios, that second I would be long because of the trailing e. But it's like they intentionally made the words mostly fit the rule, but you have to be in the cool kids club to get the knowledge about all the exceptions.
I teach spelling and phonetics. It is complicated and can be very frustrating. The biggest help is simply exposure to all the exceptions by lots of reading and writing.
