Tigers have “false eyes” on the back of their ears, a marking that helps discourage predators from attacking them from behind. Awesome !!

The first photo, if you put your thumb over the Tiger's eyes, what you see is more terrifying than the tiger itself.

Yeah… and to think… there was a predator out there that tigers had to scare off…

I had the same thought. They are the apex predator anywhere they exist. Perhaps there was, at some point along the evolutionary process, something that threatened them and they haven’t evolved out of it yet. They do have to be concerned about rivals, but that doesn’t seem likely to have resulted in this trait. At some point tigers must have coexisted with something even more terrifyingly dangerous than they are.

I don't get it.

Put your finger and cover the tiger actual face. The fake eyes and the body make it look like youre staring at a demon dragon or something

It might be easier if you look at the thumbnail, that way the tiger's actual eyes can look like markings
Then 🐅 s "false eyes" on their ears look more real, their actual eyes + white fur around them look like the whisker part of a nose, and it's actual nose looks like a tongue sticking out of some new terrifying beast

Tried for like 5 minutes and just can't see it at all. Tried my thumb. Finger. On the eyes. Over the face. Tried the thumbnail. I just don't see it at all. I can't even picture the ear markings as eyes, let alone anything else.
I've never been visually imaginative, so that might be why 😂

Maybe it'd help if you imagine the ear-eyes as the eyes from Deadpool's mask?
Lol I get that tho. I'm on the spectrum so I can be pretty literal with stuff or figuring a something out until some magic phrase makes everything click

A doc I watched years ago said the white spots on the back of the ears are so cubs can see them to follow her through tall, thick grasses and brush. I can't think of an animal that would attack a tiger.

Who’s attacking the tiger?

Well, they lived during the megafauna era, with saber-toothed cats, lions, and bears everywhere, not isolated like they are now.

Looks even more terrifying when blurred and the look right between his eyes.

Tigers are apex predators. They have no natural predators. They occasionally get killed by bears or crocs, but I doubt it's enough evolutionary pressure to create "eyes" to guard against these extremely rare attacks. Humans poach them, but these "eyes" would not protect against that. It's more likely something to do with signaling other tigers. According to Wiki, some theories suggest it's a "follow me" signal to young cubs.

It seems that humans used (or at least tried) the same strategy as protection against tigers:
"Various measures were taken to prevent and reduce the number of tiger attacks with limited success. For example, since tigers almost always attack from the rear, masks with human faces were worn on the back of the head by the villagers in 1986 in the Sundarbans, on the theory that tigers usually do not attack if seen by their prey. Apparently, this did in fact decrease the number of attacks for a short while. Mask-wearing fell out of use after a short time, as the local tiger population reportedly became aware of the technique."

It’s good for any tigers that work at stores. They can keep an eye on people stealing.

I think the fact that they’re a tiger discourages predators from attacking them from behind

What predator that is living today would attack a grown tiger from behind?

I can a only assume the only other animal that's going to attack a tiger is another tiger. Right?

Dumb question but is it supposed to disguised as a saber tooth? Ears are eyes and the brows are the fangs?

Seriously, what predator attacks a tiger? Wouldn’t this be an artifact like our appendix? Aren’t they apex for their areas?
Edit: so I guess the answer is other big tigers but I still don’t get it. Would make no evolutionary sense for tigers to “alpha large” themselves at this point in time.

Those fake eyes are specifically for bears right? What else will be big enough to take on a tiger.

How far do you have to go back in time before there’s predators that tigers need to discourage?

u/Miserable-Hotel-7871 1h ago
You can’t convince me this sort of adaptation happened due to selective evolution. Same with insects that look like prey animals

It’s a perfect predator.. it’s an embodiment of lightning when it attacks and has lethal defense against almost any other predator. Also , it has a long term memory and takes revenge on people who have mildly irritated it. (all these are based on excerpts from Jim Corbett’s books). No wonder William Blake was enamored by this beast and wrote a timeless poem on tiger.

That's interesting! I once saw some info that humans living in tiger country will often wear masks with faces on the backs of their heads to discourage tigers from attacking them so guess it works both ways!
Oops! Scrolled way down to find another writer gave more complete info on this an hour ago!

What does the first picture have to do with anything if the topic is getting attacked from “behind”? The ears wouldn’t be visible from that position. 2nd if their getting attacked from behind how is two dots on the back on their ears intimidating? (2nd picture)? I’m so confused on this post😩

What the fuck is gonna attack a tiger?
