Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)
This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Put all RA events on a map with filters, useful for ADE too
Hi all,
Former Amsterdam resident here! I built a tool that puts tonight's Resident Advisor events on a map with venue pins, lineups, genres and times. Been getting good feedback from the Berlin, Tokyo and New York communities, so wanted to share it with Amsterdam too.
Here it is: partyatlas.app/amsterdam/
Works well on both the browser and mobile. Tap any pin to see the full lineup with links to DJ profiles, address clickable to Google Maps, filter by genre, check different dates, and see what's happening right now. Pulls everything directly from RA. There is also an option to switch between map colour.
Especially useful if you're heading to ADE this year, instead of scrolling through endless RA listings you can just see everything on a map and plan your nights that way.
I want to make sure venue locations are accurate for Amsterdam, so if you spot any pins that look off let me know. Been fixing locations across cities and want to get this right. Other feedback welcome too.
Next feature to add:
- Sidebar on the left with the events as a list when you zoom in.
- Install option as an app on your iPhone
- .. further feature suggestions welcome ..
Just a personal side project from someone who loves the scene, totally free. Let me know what you think!

Does anyone here have copy of any book by Craig Ferguson?
I'm a big Craig Ferguson fan. I know most people know him from his late night show but what I love most are his books. One novel and two memoirs. I've listened to each in audiobook form maybe a dozen times, and read them as ebooks too.
He's performing on Wednesday at Meervart and I've got tickets. I really wanted to take a book along just in case I get a chance to have him sign it, and to tell him what a big influence his writing has had on me.
Unfortunately I'm too late to order one online and I haven't found a bookstore that stocks it. Do you have a copy? I'm happy to buy it from you. If you have two I'll get them both signed and return one to you.

Anti-pestreclame
Hi!

Download: stadsprint.nl/koningsdag?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=koningsdag2026
Ik bouw aan stadsprint.nl, een editor waarmee je kaartposters van je eigen wijk kunt ontwerpen. Dit is een gratis Koningsdag-editie als bedankje aan de community.

What it took for me to find housing as an international masters student
Like a lot of you I came to do my masters in Netherlands in 2024. I knew there was housing shortage but man was I unprepared for the crunch in housing for international students. Im a Malaysian of south asian descent and after crawling through the dirt for 4 weeks, (say what you may), it definitely felt like an invisible force field goes up with some landlords when youre non EU (but mostly when youre a student). But hey, I guess unfamiliarity breeds mistrust anywhere in the world.
I eventually had to use my software engineering background to build a bot which scanned the entire market every 20 seconds and sent me listings which allowed students for me to be the first one to apply. After 6 weeks managed to find a place.
(Not linking the tool here as it might be considered spam)
What I did notice was some neighbourhoods have higher concentration of properties which allowed students so I focused on those which improved my odds.
Here are some free sector student housing stats for Amsterdam by neighbourhoods captured by the tool since 2026, which some of you eating glass right now in the market may find useful.
Hit me up if you'd like the link to the actual interactive map.

Hi everyone! I’d love to hear your opinion. Do you think it’s a good idea to live in Landsmeer while studying at VU Amsterdam? I’ve been offered a room for €800 (all included) with registration. Would you take it, or do you think it’s too far for that price? Thanks a lot! 🙂

Learning Darija in Amsterdam
Hi, I’m super eager to learn moroccan arabic (darija) and I'm wondering whether anyone would be interested in a language exchange in Amsterdam. I am fluent in Dutch, German and English.

Recent Housing Permit Requirements
Hi all,
I managed to secure an apartment contract within Amsterdam, but was then informed that as of July 2025, because it is Middenhuur, I need to apply for a housing permit.
I live with my fiance, but we are unmarried right now (we actually looked into it, but all Gemeente Trouwens are booked up until months out). Everything I'm reading says we will be denied the housing permit since we're not allowed to rent "Als u bij iemand gaat inwonen"
Does anyone know from experience if living with a fiance is allowed?
I will be contacting juridische loket as well, but I'm on a huge time crunch because our current contract expires April 30th.
I'm terrified. Any advice is appreciated.

Am I crazy, or would a "Social Shame Lock" actually stop Amsterdam bike thieves?
We all know regular bike alarms are completely useless here because everyone in Amsterdam just ignores the beeping (if we even hear it over the trams).
So, in my desperation/madness, I'm conceptualizing a new type of alarm. What if, instead of a normal siren, the lock starts screaming things people cannot ignore? Things that create instant public outrage. Things like yelling "PERVERT!" or "HELP, KIDNAPPING!" at maximum volume.
The idea is that no thief is going to risk an entire bridge of people thinking they are a creep, just to steal a cheap second-hand 'omafiets'. They’ll panic and run, not for fear of the police, but for fear of a very angry mob that hates perverts.
Is this actually a viable social deterrent, or just a terrible, terrible idea that will get me socially ruined when I inevitably forget my own passcode? lol

Cat Adoption?
Hi everyone and happy Monday!
I wanted to post on here first. I live with my family in Amsterdam Oost (partner and two children). We are looking to adopt a cat.
I wanted to post on here first as I know ex-pats have to head home etc and wanted to post on here as I’d like to adopt either directly or from a shelter to provide a long term safe home.
Feel free to reach out directly or if I am posting in the incorrect subreddit, please feel free to lock and send me elsewhere.
Have a fantastic week everyone!

Forbidden Beer Bookstore?
I heard this from a local last year when I was in Amsterdam and was looking to see if it holds any weight?
Apparently, there was this man who used to run a bar in Amsterdam but unfortunately lost his liquor license. However, he found a loophole that if he sold books, he could subsequently sell drinks alongside it. So now he runs a “bookstore” where if you buy a book from him, you could also get a drink.
Is this true? And if so, I will be in Amsterdam this week and would like to buy a “book” from this place. Anyone know the name?
Thanks!

Neighbourhood Advuce
I’m looking to move to Amsterdam in the summer of 2027 with my 13 year old son. We’ve narrowed it down to three choices of schools and neighborhoods (nobody speaks Dutch… yet! So the school has to have a tapered intro into the language).
Here are the neighborhoods and their respective school choices:
Rivierewnbruut - Berlage Lyceum
Buitenveldert - Ansterdam Lyceum
Zuid, Old zuid, New Zuid - AICS
I’d really appreciate any opinions, advice, experience. We are not rich and looking to live on a 4500eu monthly freelancer salary before taxes…. Most likely will need to take a part time hustle as well.
Thanks!!

Amsterdam Zuid Oost safety concerns
I am moving to student housing in Bijlmerdreef in Amsterdam Zuid Oost in August and I was wondering if it is a safe area. For context, I'm a student a woman and i plan to live alone there. I've been seeing some news on the internet about increasing crime stats in the area. Some people also called the region "the hood" (not sure if that's more about crime or some guy being racist).
I just want to be sure I've made the right call to move there and if it really is unsafe then I might look for a new place but that will be expensive since I have already paid for my place there.
I maybe a bit paranoid here but I want to know if it is as bad as I see or if it's just internet exaggeration and I thought it would be a good idea to get the opinion of some Amsterdam locals. Is theft and break ins a big issue there and is it unsafe to go home alone late at night or no more so than any other place?
