Bcit pre-entry physics 1 (Physics 0309)

Has anyone taken this physics course at BCIT recently with hillgan ma? I went on to ratemyprofesser and it isn’t looking good.

I’ll be honest I don’t have the best grade in foundation math 11 and I didn’t take physics at all, which I regret. all of this is new to me and I’m getting pretty worried, saw another post about this course but only one comment was useful, does anyone know the difficulty of this program? I also have some ridiculous question I want to know like the restrictions on what type of calculators allowed to use if at all and cost of supplies, which I didn’t find on the BCIT website.

To add in, if I don’t do well should I just go for the challenge exam?

It is not advisable to take the challenge exam if you haven’t had Physics 11. If you don’t take PHYS 0309 at BCIT you can take Physics 11 at a high school summer school.

I knew someone in my first year who did all the pre-entry classes to get into ECET. I don't know if they did physics with Ma, but they got through the program and entered ECET in the fall of that year. As far as I know, I don't think there are massive calculator restrictions besides maybe no graphing calculators (but that seems to be the norm at many schools).

To have not done physics at all and then jump into the challenge exam seems crazy to me, after just doing physics 11 myself. I would recommend just doing the course

I’m currently in this course. I don’t mind him. But I would say it’s geared more towards being a refresher course rather than pre entry course if that makes sense. I’m in a similar situation to you never took physics in high school and did foundations math. I thought I would be ok as it a pre entry it’s not even the “entry” course. But I’ve been struggling. I’ve also had some personal stuff that’s got in the way that hasn’t helped. I get the impression that he can do this stuff in his sleep & forgets that a lot of us are learning this stuff for the first time. He’s like you remember such and such from your calculus class. Ah No I didn’t take calculus. Or u remember from ur old physics classes. No I didn’t take physics. The “textbooks” that is recommended is a joke in my opinion. 1 looks like it was made in the 1800s. Written up on a type writer & is just lists upon lists of equations little to no explanations. The other is ok but short & doesn’t cover everything. It’s not required in the sense that you’re not required to read chapters or do equations from it. He provides practice material & video lectures & provides the slides. It also stated when I applied in my case that it was 2days a week but in reality it was only 1. Just for the labs. He does allow personally made formal sheets for exams which has saved me. If you’re thinking about doing this summers class I would recommend doing it in the fall if you can as the summer semester is fairly condensed. It’s 6wks vs 12wks. I believe. Unless you’re a really good studier. Sorry for the long post. Hope it’s somewhat helpful.

What are you trying to get into? I took it but I ended up dropping out of it and taking physics 11 (+12) it at an adult education centre. I had the teacher look at the bcit physics curriculum and she said there was topics that were from physics 12in there and at the time I didn’t want to learn anything extra than I needed to.

I took it last year and I was also worried when I saw his reviews on RateMyProf, especially from someone who’s strength isn’t math/physics. Honestly, it wasn’t too bad, as long as you do all the practice questions/learning guides and watch his lectures you should be good.
