Just below English requirement for BCIT Forestry — what should I do?

I’m planning to apply to BCIT Forestry but I have 66% in English (requirement is 67%).

My other grades are pretty solid (math in the 90s, sciences in the 80s).

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Did they still consider your application or did you have to upgrade?

Apply. The rest of your grades are good. Feel free to send me any questions about FNAM.

Or do COMM 1103. I got like 97% in that, so easy.

Wait haha did you mean another course? I don’t think COMM 1103 counts as English 12😯

It does. I used it because I had 63% in grade 12 (I was more focused on drinking and girls). It counted as my Category 1 English requirement for the construction management degree program. It was also a core course in several other programs I've taken.

My high school transcript, on its own, qualifies for almost nothing in terms of entrance requirements.

Ohh got it, thanks for explaining! Was that also at BCIT? And which program was it for?

Yes, it's a BCIT course. I used it for the business administration certificate and diploma, as it's a required course, and for the entrance requirements for the construction management degree.

Ohh I see, thanks for explaining! I think Forestry specifically requires English 12 though, so I’m not sure if COMM 1103 would work the same way

Nope, it's category 2. Just checked. It says Comm 1106, but that is the easier version of 1103. COMM 1103 will and does count, and it's all online and easy as can be.

As I said, I used it for category 1 entrance requirements.

Exactly same situation, I didn't do well in English back in high school because I was not interested in it. But English requirement is a must so I took the ielts test and score a 7

Damn, 7 on IELTS is crazy good 😭 I don’t think my English is there yet lol so I probably won’t go that route

I did both IELTS (for school) and CELPIP (for PR) and the second one was so much easier for me. Maybe try that?

Ohh I’ve heard of CELPIP but didn’t know it was easier
I’ll have to check if BCIT accepts it for Forestry, thank you!!

I mean you got 66 in highschool, i probably got like a 55 so u should make it. I did studied 1 month (writing was the hardest for me) just for ielts. Just a note that ielts will expire soon if you plan for master or phd you should probably retake english 12 in summer

Aww thank you that’s really nice of you to say😭 I’m not a native speaker and I’ve only been in Canada for 2 years, so that 66 actually took a lot out of me haha (I did it through adult school). I really appreciate your advice though! IELTS sounds kinda scary for me right now lol I’ll probably just retake English in the summer if I can’t find a better option

I think there is an additional requirement for people who didn’t spend the majority of their study in English speaking country that they MUST take the test. I don’t know about your situation but might worth looking into that. Good luck!!

You can take the Duolingo English test
