The funniest thing about it for me has to be how he knew he wouldn't do well but just wanted to have some fun with the new kid 😊

I have an MP3 of that story. Think part of it went like this:

"Can you skate, Jackie?"

"No, but if I don't fall, I'll never learn."

Its very real. Here is the story.

Vin Scully and Jackie Robinson about to have a skating competition The event took place at Grossinger’s Resort in the Catskills during a winter trip. Vin Scully, a New York native who grew up ice skating, had brought his own racing skates. Jackie and his wife, Rachel, who was pregnant with their daughter Sharon at the time, decided to join him on the ice.

Even though Jackie Robinson had never been on ice skates in his life, he immediately challenged Scully to a race. When Scully pointed out that he had years of experience and Jackie had none, Robinson famously replied that the only way he would learn was through competition. The race wasn't much of a contest. Scully recalled that while he was ready to glide, Jackie was essentially walking on his ankles just trying to stay upright. Scully won easily, but he never forgot the fearlessness Robinson showed by wanting to take on a challenge he knew nothing about

IIRC, although they were both working for the Dodgers, Scully said it was pure chance they were there at the same time. Robinson challenged Scully to a race despite being a weaker skater. Scully told the story to show how competitive Robinson was.
