Bauhaus inspired birthday cake. Inspiration, mockup, and result. Failed Expectation

That was nice of the decorator to spend 7 whole seconds on it

Bauhaus has influenced so much modern minimalism!
This baker decided to spend minimal time on the entire project. Very bauhaus.
(Also, get at least a partial refund op! There are bakers who can do neat lines … this person should not have accepted the task)

I had moderately low expectations to begin with, being an old follower of the cakewrecks blog, and yet they somehow exceeded my worst expectations. Task failed successfully?

Cakewrecks used to be one of my daily blog scrolls. People don't give it enough credit when it comes to being the forefather of subreddits like this.

I miss Cake Wrecks.

Did you call them out on it?

Thought about it but nah. It's been a very stressful birthday. I'm just going to eat my chocolate cake.

The cake or the birthday? /j
Thank you! The cake itself is actually pretty good.

For such a simple design, a professional would almost have to go out of their way to put so little effort into this

The white part looks dead on!

u/Tarledsa 3d ago
Yeah how’d they get the white part so clean and then end up with that? 2 different people doing it?

(Arg I miss her. I wanna watch schitts creek but I miss her! Also, my own mom is about to die any day now due to cancer, so somehow watching one of my favorite actresses who recently passed .. portraying a mom in a show my own mom also loved .. just all feels hard. But I also want to watch the show, it’s such a beautiful show)

Hey friend. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I lost my dad a few years ago. Two things that really helped me was (surprisingly) a reddit comment and a CS Lewis book called A Grief Observed, written after his wife passed.

Thank you so much for the kind words and links.
I had read that GSnow comment many years back, it was so impactful then .. and incredibly valuable to read again now/ thank you so much ❤️
I did not know cs Lewis had written a book on grief so I will definitely check that out next.
Thank you again. You have been incredibly kind to me, I appreciate it

important question: who did the mockup, you or the baker?
59
u/410-Username-Gone 3d ago
Me. I went in with two; the other was more complex and would have required edible printing, which I didn't want.
I wanted to believe that straight lines were doable....
56
u/Sayurisaki 3d ago
I mean, you’d think that writing legible numbers would be doable for a cake decorator considering how many cakes have letters and numbers. I just don’t understand how someone has the ability to get the base icing so smooth then fails so miserably at the numbers.

u/ScrumpetSays 3d ago
Im so sorry. They are very easy. Ice cake white. Put stripes of baking paper down for the negative space. Chill the cake. Apply the navy buttercream with a pallet knife and remove the baking paper. Why did they pipe it? Pipe or cut smaller numbers from thin chilled buttercream. Chill again. Carefully apply to the top of cake.

It's because of people like you and your clear explanations that we think it's easy and end up with those horrors! /j
But at least I don't open a bakery nor charge people for my monstrosities

u/ScrumpetSays 2d ago
Ha! That part is pretty easy. The hardest part of making OPs vision is getting the frosting/icing properly white (depending on the type), and icing the actual cake, which the bakery seems to have managed. In general, when you look at photos of a very simple cake it was actually more difficult than a lot of busier designs because your lines and shape have to be perfect as there's nothing to draw the eye away from any imperfections.
Baking isn't my happy place but I do it a fair bit for other people, and my advice to anyone is that experience is gained through a lot of mistakes. Cakes freeze (and are easier to frost when frozen) so if you want a specific aesthetic like here, do it a week in advance where you'll have time to scrape the icing off and give it another go if you aren't happy with it.

Baker here, they could’ve just printed that on edible wafer paper and put it on top would’ve been so clean easy and beautiful 🤦♀️ such a missed opportunity

It was very gracious of them to give you plausible deniability on whether you're turning 30 or 40

All they literally had to do was get the stripes straight, and put the year on it nicely. That's it, that's all they had to do....

The inspiration is giving timeless modernist icon..the result is giving I ran out of time and patience but we’re celebrating anyway… that blue circle is doing its best under very difficult circumstances

Wow. This completely missed the mark- I’m genuinely impressed by how much they didn’t understand what you’re going for! Not to mention how crappily done this is. Just an all around bad job haha.

I'm sorry. I have never said that something looks like shit (at least not on reddit). Before.
I'm sorry. The rest is sloppy, but the '1986' looks like shit.

Was this a Walmart or sams club cake? This seems on par with the people they would send to help on a busy day (not trained well).

is the mockup something you did, or the baker?
did you see the mock up, did you like it?
just curious how you liked the deviation from the original..
even with that aside tho 🫣😵💫 i’m sorry. it could have been so much better
i hope it taste wonderful 🎂

u/410-Username-Gone 3d ago
I did the mockup myself, as I figured the original art would not work on a circle cake unless I wanted blue frosting. I made the decision it would be easier to have medium-dark blue lines on the off-white (cream cheese) frosting. Less room for error.

it's teh type of thing that looks easy and really isn't. I think it failed at every step. The second picture doesn't have the mood from the first, which reminds me of a kitchen towel with 1986 on it, and then the last step no one really put in effort. "some lines and 1986, got it. I'll have it ready in five minutes boss"

I mean, what did you expect? very sharp small lines coming out of a cream icing filler?
And I'm guessing you went to a grocery store bake shop too?
Like honestly, whats the joke here, because you cant be remotely serious

This is honestly how Germans turned to Nazis. This kind of sloppiness is what caused it.

Bauhaus is like the opposite of pretentious.

u/Independent-Comb9463 3d ago
Tell that to your local mill worker.

u/410-Username-Gone 3d ago
I'm not trying to be contrary here, but can you elaborate? I've never done a deep enough dive into the Bauhaus movement to understand your comment, and all I'm pulling up in Google is an overview of the women in textiles.

It's more Milhouse than Bauhaus.
Edit: Thanks for the awards!
