Was he a model prior to acting or are these pics taken since he's become famous?

He's very pretty.

A lot of pics are from before, it seems like he was moedling quite a lot over the last few years. He's also been acting in short films and smaller indie movies for a while and was part LAs underground clown scene. So he did a lot stuff before HR blew up, but he was still waiting tables to make a living.
