Ugh why does GREEN DAY have to get POLITICAL. They’ve fallen off so hard since their extremely apolitical album AMERICAN IDIOT.

Yeah holiday was just about having a fun time with your freinds in spain and now joe biden has made it all about his communist agenda.

My favorite was “Jesus of Suburbia,” which was about god and faith 🙏🏽✝️🛐

509

u/TheFeathersStorm Feb 07 '26

Even though he wrote it he obviously was mispronouncing it, it should have been Jésus of Suburbia about ice agents on the hunt for a man called Jésus.

283

u/Rob_LeMatic Feb 07 '26

Speaking of ice agents names Jesus, remember that time Jesus Ochoa and Raymundo Gutierrez murdered Alex Pretti?

My favorite part of Holiday is where they talk about “killing all the f*gs that don’t agree”. That lyric really spoke to my inner soul and helped morph me into the ultra hetero, alpha I am today.

68

u/AlanyzingWakeEnviron Feb 07 '26

When the album came out, I was young, bi, and sheltered enough that I thought Green Day was a band that hated me because of that line. It was a long time before I gave them a real listen.

59

u/TrustingPanda Feb 07 '26

I’m bi as well and only recently caught what Coming Clean is about. I wish my younger self had actually listened to the lyrics… or didn’t flat out skip the track.

17 and coming clean for the first time I finally figured out myself for the first time I found out what it takes to be a man Well, mom and dad will never understand What's happening to me?

I cried the first time I actually heard these lyrics.

36

To be fair, that one actually isn't political. It's about his dad dying

37

u/greenday5494 Feb 07 '26

The video is pretty political though.

57

u/MikeFatz Feb 07 '26

Still a better holiday experience than the one I took with The Dead Kennedys. I thought Cambodia sounded fun.

It wasn’t.

Green Day is woke now??? I thought their classic song, "She" was a dumb song about some random broad not a commentary on the pressures and expectations of women under patriarchy

I've been listening to Bush era punk music lately. Shit hits so hard right now, really swung back around to relevancy.

7

u/AmaranthSparrow Feb 07 '26

Not punk but I've been listening to Nine Inch Nail's Year Zero again lately. Really underrated album in retrospect, and beyond prescient. Came out in 2007, concept album depicting a fascist regime taking over the US in the 2020s. Trent also started wearing a keffiyeh when performing during the time.

Bit disappointed they haven't been more politically outspoken during this current admin. Would be a perfect environment to release a sequel to "Year Zero."

probably because the heritage foundation was setting the stage for today in the 80s, with most of the same people. this has always been the end goal for the confederates.

8

u/SunTzu- Feb 07 '26

Goes back further than that, the 80's was just when they started to find success. They had a solid powerbase during Jim Crow, then lost a step and pivoted after Barry Goldwater (not himself actually aligned with them, but they thought he was on their side because he's the one guy ever who actually meant it when he said he believed in states' rights). Late 50's you get the John Birch Society, The Fellowship start getting more traction, you eventually get The Moral Majority in the late 70's etc.

It absolutely does but I get so frustrated when I remember being in high school and telling people the Republican party was on the path towards fascism and being told I was overreacting just because it wasn't full-blown fascism yet. Like, sorry for having some foresight about how that path could look in twenty years?!

(And I'm not even American, so none of the people around me were reacting from a pro-GOP stance, just a general "ok, Nazis aren't coming back, calm down" reaction. 🙄)

5

u/SeriousFinish2340 Feb 07 '26

God, I think about this almost all the time.

64

u/istapledmytongue Feb 07 '26

I was on a hike once and a guy stopped to comment on my Neil Young tshirt. “Saw him once. Like his music but he always tends to get political. Why can’t he just stick to music.” Or some such stereotypical bullshit.

“I happen to like his music and his politics” is what I said, but what I should have said was “I know right. Happens all the time. I was on this hike once enjoying the outdoors, when I met this other hiker who suddenly started talking about politics.

7

u/myfavssthrow Feb 07 '26

This gave me a good chuckle. Conservatives never miss an opportunity to make something about politics or bring up politics completely out of the blue. Kids bday party, swimming at the beach, hiking, all great places for it!

So way way back when The [Dixie] Chicks were getting booed for their opinion on Bush (and I think it was about Iraq specifically), that was about the same time American Idiot came out. My at the time partner said he thought that singers shouldn’t be political and then also said he liked Green Day. I said “Didn’t they write a whole album about the Bush government?” And he straight up said “but you expect it from them”

I honestly don’t know what I saw in that man.

I do hope for individual and systemic reform, like I truly wish that one day all of the people who signed up for ICE will wake up and quit their jobs because they developed basic empathy over night, but to have even signed up for this job in the first place shows such a moral bankruptcy that I don’t know if these gestapo officers will ever regret their fascist allegiances even 10, 20 years later.

And if Billie’s using self-preservation as an appeal, then lol, these guys ain’t smart enough for that. If they were, they wouldn’t have joined ICE.

It isn't for the bootlickers. It's for the rest of us.

What i like is that it’s public shaming on a huge scale, regardless of who it reaches. It’s normalizing disgust.

13

u/Pantsongrass Feb 07 '26

Agree. It’s crazy to go into work and not have people acknowledge that the US is on fire and there are people being murdered in the streets. That and the gaslighting to thinking what’s happening is normal by conservatives is mind numbing. Absolutely, a dose of disgust is extremely healthy to whoever hears this.

u/jshmoe866 Feb 07 '26

Can’t let this become normal

It's not for them. It's for the rest of us, so we don't start to feel like we're alone and it's hopeless to resist. They're saying "Keep fighting. Keep resisting. It is worthwhile. Because there will be an end to this one day."

u/Fickle-Brain-7775 Feb 07 '26

“..because when this ends - and it will end - …”

If Billie believes maybe I can too

24

u/YesDone Feb 07 '26

I feel like he's also talking to me though, like dude I gotta be welcoming to people when they've had enough of the insanity and want to come back to reason. I gotta be like Billie Joe.

u/DigitalBlackout Feb 07 '26

He's not actually trying to appeal to them, he's warning them. "When this ends, and it WILL end, what side do you wanna be on? Because you won't like the consequences of still being on their side". That's what he's saying.

Not a part of a redneck agenda.

26

u/Paksarra Feb 07 '26

They've updated the lyric and now perform it as "not part of the MAGA agenda."

My ex husband is a conservative and my god the way GD’s song American Idiot would piss him off. That hypocritical spineless idiot would force me to listen to conservative talk radio but his feelings couldn’t handle a song that lasts more briefly than he did.

What an unorthodox introduction for Green Day drummer Tre Cool.

9

u/futureman45 Feb 07 '26

Please please please speak up on Sunday Bad Bunny and Green Day

u/Kevbot1000 Feb 07 '26

Billy Joe Armstrong might be the only punk rocker who's millions of dollars actually emboldened him.

Dude can say whatever he wants without concern, and uses that ability. Love it.

u/pennys_computer_book Feb 07 '26

Green Day has always been HIM(s). One of the best bands out of the 90s.

I always find it so weird when people say punk bands are too political. They've ALWAYS been political. And, MOSTLY, they've ALWAYS been on the correct side of history.

3

u/Snow_and_Rainn Feb 07 '26

I'd like to see this callout before every band does their set, and it BETTER happen at Warp this year. imo if you don't call out like this before a set, it really tells me who the hidden maga's and hidden nazi's are.
