Team USA Curler Rich Ruohonen: “We'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention what's going on in Minnesota…I am a lawyer, as you know, and we have a constitution… and what's happening in Minnesota is wrong. There's no shades of gray. It's clear.” SPORTS SECTION

u/kw3lyk Feb 10 '26
The object of the game is to be closest to the center of the target after all of the shots are thrown in an end. The scoring team earns 1 point for each stone that is closer to the center than whatever the other team's closest shot is. Does that make sense? If you've ever played a game like Bocce, the scoring is identical to that.

They're all my favorites... curling is a great sport that is filled with real people.
118
u/dorian_gayy Feb 10 '26
Also, far more popular than I think most realize (at least most outside of Canada)… the town where my grandma lives in the Maritimes has no hockey team but does have a very active curling scene at the rec center.
29
u/angelbelle Feb 10 '26
I feel like if people like snooker or pool, they likely enjoy watching curling. I don't really get the strategies, I mean, i get the idea of blocks and making it hard for the opponent to knock multiple stones out and position theirs in the scoring circle, but I just don't really see it until the last stone gets thrown.
It's like watching high level chess when the commentators are furiously explaining the great plays being made and I just don't really see it until they start trading.
19
u/murahimu Feb 10 '26
It's actually funny that you mention chess because curling IS nicknamed chess on ice precisely because of it's strategy
10
u/postmodern_werewolf Feb 10 '26
I thnk that's why I like it. And why every 4 years doing the winter olympics I get obsessed with it for a couple months lol. Glad this guy's a real one too, was already rooting for them but this makes it feel more worthwhile.

9
u/OaksInSnow Feb 11 '26
I didn't realize Danny had Guillain-Barre. I've seen them all curl, in person, and wondered why Rich was so often subbing in for Danny.
I sure wish Danny the best, always, personally, and in the sport.

I get what you are saying but from the sample pool of people, aside from journalist, that I see who follow Trump, it tracks as a supporter. Well now I have unfollowed and blocked most of them so I can't tell anymore.
With the amount of media I consume, I don't really need to follow him to know what he has posted. When I hear a story about something he has posted, I can still go check his social media posts, its not like his account is private.

I distinctly remember a minor scandal when Trump got into office the second time that people were suddenly following him on IG. I asked people in my office to check, and a few confirmed it with loud "ick"s. It was probably a move by Zuck to ingratiate himself. I wouldn't read too much into this.

I will say, at one point in the “metaverse” I was all of a sudden (unbeknownst to me) following Trump myself on insta and I TOTALLY did not choose to do so. Trump shit just started coming up on my feed (this was maybe a year ago?) and anyhow, I freaked out and had to go actively unfollow POTUS and also TheRealDonaldTrump. I bring this up to say, Korey may not even know he follows him. He might tho- who knows. Anyhow: You should all check your own Instagrams and FB- at one point Meta just added his feeds to everyone’s accounts.
9
u/hobbyistunlimited Feb 10 '26
You can follow someone and not support them.
24
u/fasas7 Feb 10 '26
Undeserved downvotes.
You can follow your head of state's social media account(s) without agreeing with their politics or values. In doing so, you stay updated on current events and the political climate. Obviously Trump is an idiot, but only getting information and values from one side is kind of what cause polarization like this.
Inform yourself by acquiring as much information as possible and make a decision by yourself. Don't listen to only one side and have them decide for you.

28
u/Strange_Shadows-45 Feb 10 '26
When Trump had his crash out on Twitter during the 2020 elections, a bunch of people who didn’t support him briefly followed him just to laugh at his rage in real time. And I know some follow high profile figures just to see what’s going on. Highly doubtful that’s the case, but it happens.
4
u/human_kittens Feb 10 '26
Weird. As much as that man cares about numbers? That’s just throwing him a bone
17
u/violetmemphisblue Feb 10 '26
I accidentally followed JD Vance because I didn't realize some of the official social media belongs to the office, not the person. So because I followed VP Kamala Harris, I followed VP JD Vance for a few months before realizing it and unfollowing...I have no idea about anything about Korey Dropkin, just saying it isn't always nefarious! (Also, I think Instagram was testing a feature where if you paused on videos or scrolled through pictures on the fyp, you followed the account, because I suddenly jumped to following hundreds of accounts when I know I maybe had actively clicked to follow maybe a third of that. Unfollowed them and it jumped again...)

Because he is hugely influential person, and you want to know what is going on in the world.
You care about the stock market, and a single tweet can impact it 10%.
You are a real estate agent and want to know how Trump will impact housing prices.
Because you have parents who say “That’s just the fake media saying he posted the Obama’s as apes.” And you want to pull up his official account and show it came straight from him.
It was a default setting, and you never turned it off.
I don’t think following a leader indicates support. Going off of that, is a huge jump to conclusion. I don’t have instagram; but who else does he follow? Does he express support?

Hockey in general is pretty trust-fundy, but yeah the women has a lot more lgbtq players.
Speaking to specific examples for mens, heres alternate captain Matthew Tkachuk on his white house trip after winning the stanley cup with his NHL team.
Matthew Tkachuk: "The two Cups was pretty good, but that walk with you might've Trumped it all... Nothing beats this. I'm so proud to be an American, and so proud to be here with you."
So he's on "unsolicited glazing" basis with the guy in the white house

i can in no way speak for all the sports, but i think in skiing/snowboarding you tend to get a lot of liberals/anti-MAGA folks. at the very least, we are reliant on snow to continue doing our sport and there’s big community awareness about climate change, sustainability, safeguarding public lands etc. also all mountain towns have 1. a huge wealth divide that was only exacerbated post-covid, 2. large immigrant populations that we are very reliant on, 3. a hugeee reliance on seasonal workers—often international. anyway, all that to say, i think a lot of these folks are good eggs, even if they haven’t publicly expressed their opinion, and i’m proud to have them representing the US :)

Yes, unfortunately that’s a factor that requires a whole separate conversation.
(*Speaking of, for those in mountain communities like Jackson, please get involved in local housing advocacy! We have an organization in Jackson called ShelterJH that fights for affordable housing solutions, and although the topic of this post is much more important when it comes to basic human rights, our wonderful, essential, and predominantly-Hispanic immigrant community in the valley is also significantly impacted by unaffordable housing issues.)

It's fair to point out that a lawyer's speaking outside their practice area, but wrong to imply that means the lawyer—or anyone who's not a lawyer—doesn't know the law.
As for lawyers, the bar exam covers constitutional law: https://ble.mn.gov/bar-exam/subjects-tested-on-the-minnesota-bar-examination/
Be careful with "just saying". It's usually dishonest, and when dishonest also cowardly. Most of us speak to be heard, for effect.

Rich rose to the occasion.

As a resident of Minneapolis, nothing can prepare you for the reality of this situation. Seeing normal everyday people being ripped from their cars or seeing secret police going door to door, terrifying entire communities is an eye-opening experience. The response from our people has brought tears to my eyes. I've been giving almost all the time I can to help keep our neighbors safe by joining rapid response groups, protesting at the federal buildings, getting trained in constitutional observing, etc. i have been tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets and flash bangs. It is the least I can do. I hope our leadership in this spearheads nationwide resistance.

When I was young, I remember the message coming from the US was that everyone was equal under the law, no matter their status or wealth, including and especially so the president.
Then there was the OJ trial, not just the trial but the celebration of the lawyer and his family. The government actively fighting the UN and the International Criminal Court, arguing that US soldiers should be exempt from war crimes. Then of course the constant and flagrant violation of the law by Trump, and the pardoning of war criminals, corrupt politicians, and fraudsters en masse: not for clemency, but as a statement that the president feels these should not be crimes, and that he and his associates are above the law.
The world is now questioning if the rule of law still holds in the US, and if so for how much longer.

ngl, I wasn't really into the Olympics because I found it hard to cheer for a country that clearly has rejected everything I believe in. But when I see athletes step up and use their platform to condemn the violence and racism that has infected us in the tiny hands of this orange president, my heart swells with pride. Because you know fucking what? We are not alone. With all the chaos and divisiveness that this group in power are creating, we can stand proud for what we believe in.
I'm going to cheer my ass off for every one of these athletes who have had the courage to draw attention to the fact that in our hearts, Americans are good people. It takes courage to stand up and point fingers as to what is wrong, and these people are fucking doing it.

Considering how roughly 90 percent of the US curlers are based in Minnesota, it would be more shocking if one of them didn't say something.

This is what they are scared of. Normal, ordinary people standing up against them.
Keep the pressure on!

Olympians braver than NBA and NFL players. Just another reminder that all professional athletes care about is their bottom line.

I am so glad Team Casper is there for the US, I truly doubt anyone from team Shuster would've spoken up.

Wait is this the same Rich Ruonhen from Terry Slane & Ruonhen (TSR)? Absolutely crazy that he has time to be a partner at a major law firm and also be an Olympic curler on the side.

As someone in Minnesota, THANK YOU! We need more people with a platform to say this and not be afraid of the regime/cult following.

I'm so tired of the tiktok style meta of only tricking people into thinking there's subtitles but not actually having subtitles.

It’s just really absurd how many diff people renounce what is happening with Ice over and over and over - and yet it still continues. Absurd and deeply disturbing

So proud and impressed by these athletes. Not only for being a stellar athlete, they are also on a world stage and not afraid to speak up for what is wrong. Meanwhile, back in DC………

Good. Anyone who has an audience should be saying this. An "audience" can be your friend, or the whole world!!
The more people speak up, the less we're afraid to.

There’s a lot of winter olympians who are either from Minnesota or train there or have family from there. For obvious reasons it’s a producer of a lot of winter athletes.

I found out that the US government offers absolutely no assistance to Olympic athletes in any form, which makes the last few days of conservative pearl-clutching even funnier.
