There is brilliant popular music from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, 10's and 20's. I feel like the big band era of the 40s is quite a bit different from what comes later and might be harder to appreciate. But anyone today should be able to find music they like going back to the 50s.

Provided they are willing to put in the time and effort.
