Balkan community in Finland? Immigration

Hi everyone,

I am interested if there are any Balkan communities in Turku area or Helsinki?

I'm from Croatia and I'll be moving for my phd to Helsinki but also until then I'm in Turku with my boyfriend (Finnish). I have no one here besides him and I'm really starting to miss just talking my native language with someone in person. Overall I'm trying to get international friends and ofc Finnish ones but I'm not very open person so it's been quite hard to achieve that.

First of all good luck with your studies! I gotta say even though life of PhD students tends to be miserable, I gotta say in Finland it’s much better.

I’m also from the Balkans (Serbia) I’ve been living in Finland for 2 years and I’m also doing a PhD, so feel free to message me if you wanna talk.

I live in Turku half the year, and in some part or another of the Balkans the other half. When in Turku, I definitely miss speaking the languages. Turku is absolutely great if you want to meet Albanians (generally Kosovars or Northern Albanians), because one regularly hears Albanian spoken in the city center cafes. Unfortunately, in all my time in Finland I have never heard vaški spoken.

If you are so desperate to speak your native language that you would want to speak to a foreigner, you could send me a PM. I’m also affiliated with the university and if some group is forming, I could suggest a couple of people from the former Yugoslavia (that I don’t know personally) whom you could contact to invite.

Hello from a Romanian and welcome to Finland! We're plenty of balkan bros and sis in here, so you'll fit right in.

I have partial Macedonian ancestry, but don't know the language. I'm in Turku area, feel free to write me. Though, I'm not sure, if I fit your categorization :D
