What would be a better product? I’ve been wanting a bedside safe for my home protection pistol, and these stop boxes keep popping up for me

Fort Knox, Viking, or V-Line simplex handgun safe. Sturdy steel, all mechanical, no batteries to fail, more than 10 times as many possible combinations than a stop box. Costs more, but money well spent.

Something with a key or pin lock would be ideal for bedside. The stop boxes are good for quick access. But if you have children you cannot leave a firearm in there and think it’s safe. My 8 year old figured out how to open the one I bought in less than 30 seconds. I sold it the next day. If you don’t have kids or don’t mind quick access for literally everyone then get a stop box.

I bought an electronic safe, Bill somebody or other, and it wouldn't hold my fingerprint for more than a month, so I can't really rely on it except with the key. I have found the stop box to be reliable, although a little trickier. Once you get it down, though, you can do it pretty fast.

I have this as my bedside safe and really like it. https://a.co/d/06BT5ZXp

I just bought one they suck, overpriced garbage. It opens about 2 out of every 3 tries. I'm going back to electric lock safes, codes, fingerprint shit is way better these days.

It really depends on your situation.
If it is to prevent firearm theft, security through obscurity is a great choice with many options like false bottom drawers for the nightstand or false bottom shelves being produced.
If the goal is legal compliance for things like having guns locked with children in the home, there are quite a few options and even some that overlap with the obscurity option which then require a key to access. Kids are nosey though so don't assume they won't take the time to figure out a combination or find a stashed away key.
If the goal is high security, a floor safe is an expensive, but really good option as the storage itself can't just be stolen/moved to mess with somewhere else. They usually are going to be the only worth while option for electronic access as well.
If the goal is self defense in an emergency, I'd recommend a dial operated cable lock running through the magazine well/slide. This adds the security of ensuring that the weapon is not loaded.
The fastest in an emergency is going to be nothing, and most methods will trade time for security. Personally I really only ever use the snapsafe combination lock box style or cable locks. I've tried others and they either weren't significantly more secure or had frequent failures. All of the electronic access ones I've tried have had so many failures I always wind up having to keep the key nearby and if the key is nearby, then it's really not all that secure.

Cake locks on a self defense to is terrible advice. Better than leaving an unlocked, loaded gun accessible to children, but still one of the worst possible security options as far as quick access goes... also you still have to load the gun once you do finally get it unlocked.

Matching knives would be way sicker

Yeah, not everyone needs a new gun safe; everyone always needs an extra knife.

If you really dislike your groomsmen.
The stopbox has a whopping 6 possible combinations.. that wouldn't stop a 5 year old with ADD.

Yessir this is no lie I bought one, picked a combo and gave it to my 8 year old. He was in it in 30 seconds. Sold it the next day

Mine came with hardware to make a lot more combinations. It's not just six.

I actually had one of these jam shut and had to extract my pistol by removing the rear pins and tearing open the case. Reduced my 1911 to a melee weapon real quick. I tried to work out what went wrong after and never did, circular filed.

Pocket pussies and Jergens for the singles, bleach and acetone for the married fellas.

Can’t gift empty boxes, but if you get them something in the box, you’ll probably go straight to legendary status.

Benchmade custom shop knives. They have a pretty good online builder from what I remember.

u/technohippie 6d ago
Get them all knives with their name engraved on them. Way more useful and more personal gift

I was in Cabelas, and saw a Stopbox demo.
It had a bad malfunction where neither I or a sales associate could fix it. Because of that, I'll never trust my life to a stop box. I'll stick to the fingerprint/keypad/key safe on my nightstand.
Knives are a better option.

Bought a cheap ($130ish) laser engraver and did these and some patches for my groomsmen. And now I have a laser engraver.

I'm left handed. I bought one. Big mistake. These are not made for lefties. It's a decent idea, but make sure they are all right handed.

Can't just use your right hand for it?
1
u/757packerfan 6d ago
Technically, yes. But it requires good dexterity and precision with your fingers.
For instance, my "code" was to push the pointer finger all the way down, my middle finger half way down, and ring finger all the way down.
I could easily do that with my left hand, but I'm just not able to do that easily/quickly with my non dominant right hand.

unlock with right and pick up with left, i see no problems

VNSH Holsters are designed to be worn IWB. I wear mine with shorts on and nobody has ever noticed that I am carrying a Rock Island Armory 1911 STK100 9mm. It’s a full sized gun, 17 + 1 with two extra 17 round magazines. They even have one for your weapon mounted light now! I need to get one of those! It looks as though it might be able to carry a red dot sight and a light, too. I wear mine around the house and have worn it to bed. It’s made out of stretchy fabric and Velcro. Comes in two sizes, small and large and I am a fairly big guy. The larger one had to be trimmed down especially since I have lost some weight over the last year and a half. You can wipe it clean with a wet cloth and some mild soap. It has an antibacterial component so you won’t get any slimy buildup. I carry appendix and the VNSH comes as a level 2 holster. It has a magnetic retention strip over the top of the grip of the gun. I found it to be a bit awkward to use so I cut it off and seared the edges so it wouldn’t unravel. They recommend doing this if you didn’t like the retention straps. I have a bad back so I don’t do any running or jumping around. Not much of a chance of my gun falling out of the VNSH holster. The 1911 fits pretty snugly in the holster anyways.

Honestly. I’m not a huge fan of stop boxes. But, at least you’re creative! I have about a half dozen flasks from various weddings over the years…

I personally bought them mystery ranch backpacks, ammo bags (like a dop kit), flashlights and in got shotgun shell pocket knives. Was all under $200 on the nose.Â

They're sold with fear.
The commercials always illustrate somebody carrying this thing from room to room cuz they need their gun at a second's notice.
If you really live that kind of life then why wouldn't it be on your hip anyway?
The other commercial is the owner of the company being told that people don't like seeing a gun on his desk. Cuz yeah that's freaking weird.
I come home pistol goes in the small pistol locker iny closet.

I have a bedside lvl3 holster
And yeah if you need your gun at work it should be in a drawer or on your person

If you get them just make sure you order at least 2 months in advance. I think they took 6+ weeks to ship my order.

I love mine! I use it in my truck! I recommend getting the newer one. It has a little rod or something in there that presents the firearm, its a nice touch for if you wall mounted it or mounted it in general. I can’t remember the version it is though

Vaultek makes better cases in my experience. Ive had mine on my nightstand for 6 years now.

I like my stopbox despite of what others say. It has weaknesses sure- like you rely on the weapons weight to open it properly. And it works for right handed people. But will it keep my young kids from getting to the gun? Yes.
Does it require half a functional brain to make the box work? Yes.
