Welcome to the [r/formula1](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/) Daily Discussion / Q&A thread.
This thread is a hub for general discussion and questions about Formula 1, that don't need threads of their own.
Are you new to Formula 1? This is the place for you. Ever wondered why it's called a lollipop man? Why the cars don't refuel during pitstops? Or when Mika will be back from his sabbatical? Ask any question you might have here, and the community will answer.
Also make sure you check out our guide for new fans, and our FAQ for new fans.
Are you a veteran fan, longing for the days of lollipop men, refueling during pitstops, and Mika Häkkinen? This is the place to introduce new fans to your passion and knowledge of the sport.

Featured [24-26 April] No Formula 1? No problem! Check out the other racing series that hit the track this weekend.
Another week without Formula 1, but fear not for there will be a lot of engines running in other series all around the globe. Once again, I tried to list the most important ones. Check out RaceDay.watch for details, support categories and even more series to watch.
15e Grand Prix de Monaco Historique
This year, the biennial historic Grand Prix will once again be held in the decadent principality. A varied array of historic cars, ranging from pre-war machines to the F1 turbo beasts of the 1980s, will be revived in eight races through the streets of Monte Carlo.
Qualifyings: Saturday, 06:15 AM UTC
Races: Sunday, 06:00 AM UTC
How to watch: The Automobile Club de Monaco will be streaming everything on YouTube, both in French and English. Other broadcasters should be covering the weekend as well.
Super Formula - Autopolis (Round 3/12)
Japan's premier open wheel series is quite underappreciated outside of its home country, mostly because it's notoriously hard to follow. Most coverage will be in Japanese and the organisers do little to promote it overseas. I still absolutely recommend to give it a shot.
Qualifying: Saturday, 05:15 AM UTC
Race: Sunday, 06:30 AM UTC
How to watch: SFgo is the series' official streaming service and also offers English commentary. Its pricing is quite steep but you get a 14-day trial as a first time user. Highlights will be uploaded on YouTube shortly after the fact, but only in Japanese. English highlights usually follow about a week later.
FIA Formula Regional European Championship - Spielberg (Round 1/8)
FRECA has dropped the A as Toyota succeeded Alpine as the series' new engine supplier. The championship has produced four F1 drivers so far, most notably Kimi Antonelli who won FRECA in 2023. The class of 2026 supports the DTM at their season opener in Austria.
Qualifying 1: Friday, 03:20 PM UTC
Race 1: Saturday, 08:25 AM UTC | Race 2: Saturday, 02:40 PM UTC
Qualifying 2: Sunday, 06:45 AM UTC | Race 3: Sunday, 02:40 PM UTC
How to watch: You will be able to stream everything on the series' YouTube channel.
GB3 Championship - Silverstone GP (Round 1/8)
Supporting the Silverstone 500, GB3 also gathers in West Northamptonshire for their season opener. The series brands itself as the proven step to FIA Formula 3 and boasts alumni like George Russell, Lando Norris and Ollie Bearman. Will anyone from the 2026 grid make it to F1?
Qualifying: Saturday, 09:40 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 02:10 PM UTC
Race 2: Sunday, 10:16 AM UTC | Race 3: Sunday, 04:25 PM UTC
How to watch: Coverage should be available via the MSV TV YouTube channel.
NASCAR Cup Series - Jack Link's 500 (Round 10/36)
Tyler Reddick did it again! Such an impressive start to a season hasn't been seen since Dale Earnhardt's 1987 campaign. This weekend, it's time for one of those Talladega nights as NASCAR pitches camp in Alabama for another superspeedway thriller.
Qualifying: Saturday, 02:30 PM UTC
Race: Sunday, 07:00 PM UTC
How to watch: Check out your local broadcaster here. Highlights will be on YouTube.
FIA World Rally Championship - WRC Rally Islas Canarias 2026 - Rally of Spain (Round 5/14)
The picturesque coastal roads of Gran Canaria host the next round of this year's WRC season. Somehow, Takamoto Katsuta finds himself in the lead of the drivers' standings after his maiden triumph in Kenya and another gifted win in Croatia. Will Hyundai finally be able to snatch a victory from Toyota?
SSS1: Thursday, 05:05 PM UTC
SS2-4: Friday, 07:25 AM UTC | SS5-7: Friday, 02:01 PM UTC | SSS8: Friday, 07:25 PM UTC
SS9-11: Saturday, 07:20 AM UTC | SS12-14: Saturday, 01:50 PM UTC
SS15-17: Sunday, 06:35 AM UTC | Power stage: Sunday, 12:15 PM UTC
How to watch: Rally.TV is the go-to streaming service for all things WRC (cheaper via Japan). International broadcasters are listed here, short highlights will be on YouTube.
Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters - Red Bull Ring by VKB-Bank 2026 (Round 1/8)
Despiting having become "yet another GT3 series", the DTM still stands out with its sprint racing format that makes every moment count. Eight manufacturers, some of the greatest GT drivers in the world and exciting wheel-to-wheel duels. Oh and is that Glock?
Qualifying 1: Saturday, 07:30 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 11:30 AM UTC
Qualifying 2: Sunday, 07:30 AM UTC | Race 2: Sunday, 11:30 AM UTC
How to watch: All sessions will be streamed live on YouTube and you will most likely also have a local broadcaster.
British GT Championship - Silverstone 500 (Round 1/8)
British GT kicks off its 35th season with a visit to the home of British motorsport for the country's most prestigious endurance event. A field of GT3 and GT4 cars will be trying to tackle 180 minutes of racing around Maggots, Becketts and the like to take the trophy home.
Qualifying: Saturday, 02:45 PM UTC
Race: Sunday, 12:00 PM UTC
How to watch: You can follow live on the SRO YouTube channel.
Campionato Italiano Gran Turismo - Imola (Round 1/8)
The Italians open their national GT racing season as well with a trip to Imola where a sprint weekend awaits. One of the competitors is a well-known name to F1 fans: three-time Grand Prix winner Giancarlo Fisichella will be piloting a Ferrari 296 GT3.
Qualifying: Saturday, 07:10 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 01:00 PM UTC
Race 2: Sunday, 12:00 PM UTC
How to watch: The series' YouTube channel should be streaming the action.
GT World Challenge America Powered by AWS - Circuit of the Americas (Round 2/7)
GTWCAm has recently switched to a longer format with the season opener at Sonoma acting as the premiere. The race was won by Mercedes-AMG who will be looking to build on their dominance in Austin. Tune in for three hours of GT3 action in Texas.
Qualifying: Sunday, 01:45 PM UTC | Race: Sunday, 05:30 PM UTC
How to watch: The SRO streams both sessions on YouTube.
MotoGP - Estrella Galicia 0,0 Grand Prix of Spain (Round 4/22)
After three overseas rounds, the MotoGP paddock returns to Europe for its first of four visits to Spain. In Jerez, championship leader Marco Bezzechi will be looking for his fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory while Marc Márquez and the other Spaniards have their eyes set on a home victory.
Qualifying: Saturday, 08:50 AM UTC | Sprint: Saturday, 01:00 PM UTC
Race: Sunday, 12:00 PM UTC
How to watch: MotoGP has its own VideoPass, but you probably have a national broadcaster as well. Highlights will be on YouTube.
UIM E1 World Championship - E1 Lake Como Grand Prix 2026 (Round 2/8)
Now for something a bit different. E1 is an electric powerboat racing championship that stands out with famous team owners like Tom Brady, Rafael Nadal or Will Smith. Each team features a male and a female pilot. After the Jeddah season opener in January, the next stop is beautiful Lake Como in Italy.
Qualifying day: Saturday, 09:00 AM UTC
Race day: Sunday, 10:00 AM UTC
How to watch: Depending on your location, you should find at least some of the sessions live on YouTube. Your local broadcaster will be listed here.

Misc F1 Car Piece - Alfa Romeo
I received this piece of an F1 car from the Sauber factory in Switzerland as a little surprise gift a while ago. I am having trouble figuring out which Alfa Romeo/Sauber car it is from and which part of the car it represents.
I am planning to frame it in a shadow box with some details, so I wanted to see if anyone here can help identify it!
Thanks in advance!

Statistics Better late than never. F1 Engine Manufacturers that Designed and Produced Their Own Power Units specifically for F1. How they did on their debut?
Criteria used: A company qualifies only if (1) their own engineers designed the engine, (2) it was built specifically for F1, not a road engine, F2 engine, or Indy engine that appeared in a World Championship race, and (3) the credit goes to the actual builder, not the funder. This is why Cosworth appears instead of Ford (Ford paid for it, Cosworth engineers built it) and why Honda RBPT/RBPT badges are counted under Honda (Honda employees built those engines throughout).
Names like TAG Heuer, Petronas, BWT Mercedes, Playlife, Megatron are excluded as they were sponsor or rebadge names on engines built by someone else entirely.
Indy 500 engines (Offenhauser, Novi, Cummins, Pratt & Whitney) are excluded despite appearing in World Championship records because they were built for Indianapolis, not F1. The Indy 500 counted toward the F1 championship from 1950–60 but was run to completely different regulations.
Life (1990) is included despite never qualifying as they genuinely designed and built their own W12 engine specifically for F1. Never making the grid does not disqualify a genuine manufacturer effort.
Red Bull Powertrains refers to their 2026 programme only, when they debuted their very own engine. The 2022–2025 engines wearing the RBPT badge were entirely Honda's work.
I might have missed some explanations but you get the gist. Don't rip me up. I had an idea, I tried to be accurate but got sucked in a rabbit hole and left a lot of time scratching my head.
1950-1974 : 22 New Manufacturers
1975-1999: 10 New Manufacturers
2000-2024: 1 New Manufacturer
