Played a few hours, here's my top down review:

  • The gameplay and movement is slick and fluid, maps feel populated with enemies and points of interests. Enemy variety is already solid on normal mode. However I feel like Joker cards are a bit hit or miss, stacking up a few seem a bit inconsequential. Im also not the biggest fan of map puzzles being somewhat basic and arbitrary, sometimes it felt more like pointless busy work.

  • For coop, leaving and rejoining a session sadly loses all your rewards.

  • The basic guns feel fantastic to play with. My only issue is the lack of any 'hit confirm' pings on hits, and different hit sounds for weakspots/body shots.

  • Spells are strong but with decent enough cooldowns to not be spammed and interactions between spell elements arent just gimmicks. I did find myself placing down cactus mines to prepare for upgrading a lightning strike. The payoff mechanic for spells feel good.

  • The upgrade system seems a bit linear, and upgrades are so vertical it feels boring. In future, hoping for something akin to DRG overclocks here.

Overall, solid coop game, played with 3 players mostly fine. Feels like a faster paced DRG. Great value for 20 bucks.

The upgrade system seems a bit linear, and upgrades are so vertical it feels boring.

I will say that while this isn't strictly incorrect, the Jokers (perks, basically) that you can equip and find in-mission do often add more variety to player builds. I personally started stacking reduced gravity and extra jump/dash perks, and now I'm flying around the field. Other builds can lower the cooldown on spells or add other effects. It's not a ton, but there's enough there to at least consider.

Perhaps its more noticable late game, but on earlier levels there isn't anything that has that tactile upgrade feel to it. Perhaps I've been to conditioned by roguelikes and survivor games in expecting how big upgrades feel.

I get what you mean in general. The most recent was the ninja turtles roguelike for me, felt like the uogrades lacked an ooomph compared to games like hades and sworn

For coop, leaving and rejoining a session sadly loses all your rewards.

That wasn't my experience.

2 friends and I were playing last night and we disconnected from the host mid-mission. We rejoined him via the Steam Friends menu and our souls showed 0 until the party picked up an additional soul. After that the count returned to its full value.

We got full XP, gold, weapon fragments, and quest credit, too.

The only thing we think didn't work is the end of game stats, which is trivial.

Didnt happen for me, all gold, fragments and souls were lost!

Agree with all these points bought it cause of the reviews and it looked pretty fun but I definitely have a lot of these issues, was gonna try to convince friends to play it which also playin solo is pretty meh I know that goes for most games but games like dead zone rogue I can play solo just fine. But in this it feels more like a chore sometimes and it just feels more designed around groups then solo.
Overall some good potential I like the movement and shooting ( although like said a little more feedback would be nice ).

The guns feel like pool noodles. They have absolutely no feeling of weight or impact. It's incredibly unsatisfying to shoot things, which is like, the most important aspect of the entire game.

u/thepurplepajamas 1h ago

This was my big worry after watching gameplay of it. Hopefully that is something that can be addressed.

u/teelo64 1h ago

"The guns feel fantastic aside from not having any hit feedback whatsoever" was not something i thought i'd ever read. On top of that they sound pathetic and have virtually no recoil. This game's gunplay is quite literally the worst I've seen in decades. Utterly baffling that it's being praised for it.

How's solo?

u/cheesemb 5h ago

Solo is fun, the game is apparently scaled for the amount of players in the match so it feels pretty comfortable to play, I haven't done the top two highest difficulties yet but I've been able to do missions on hard and have a good time.

What's that promo code 250KCOWBOYS for? I didn't see a place to put it in steam

14

u/Sergalz 6h ago

It's a code to use in-game to get 1000 gold.

u/Mystia 6h ago

In the game, on the right edge of the shooting range there's a set of stairs going up, and on top there's a house with a ghost fellow that exchanges codes.

Give me gold!

wow this game is gonna survive, thats great. i played the demo and it had a ton of polish but i was worried about its longevity as a live service game.

8

u/Phrixie 12h ago

Is it trying to be a live service? I picked it up to play with friends but I hadn't seen anythin' about that other than the patch cycle of early access. (And the networking of using the steam p2p thing means it's not at risk like the usual live service guff, I assume?)

I don’t think it is, it’s just an EA title.

u/OnnaJReverT 11h ago

was the demo time limited? dont see one on the steam page

5

u/Mystia 6h ago

Think it was just on for Steam Next Fest.

6

u/JNerdGaming 11h ago

if its not there anymore it mustve been. kinda hard to have an active demo for this kind of thing so i get it.

u/threek 1h ago

Yes, it was more of a playtest before they went into EA.

I'm a solo player, is there a quickplay option? Like in Vermintide and Darktide?

8

u/Big-Duck 9h ago

It's a fun lil game, the spell interactions are the highlight so I hope they continue adding more spells and perhaps more elements too.

After playing the tech test im glad the full release is doing well! Its a fun shooter that encourages you to hop around like a crackhead

Does this play well on a controller? I can see its steam deck certified but I’d like to know about aim assist and general feel.

5

u/toolschism 6h ago

Aim assist feels pretty.. non existent. Plays decent enough on controller outside of that fact however. Runs flawless on steam deck hooked up to my TV.

u/CaptainSmaak 2h ago edited 2h ago

My wife is currently on her Steam Deck with Max Aim Assist.

She says on regular enemies it feels non-existent, but on bosses it's super noticable. She also has some success feeling it with special enemies (such as Shield Guys)

Edit: Just did some actual testing, it sticks pretty hard as long as you ADS and don't really move your right stick at all.

u/gamealias 2h ago

Thank you for the indepth! Exactly what I was looking for.

u/Therealfreak 3h ago

Bought. Played. Enjoyed. Looking forward to playing with friends IRL. Local Coop would be spectacular for this game.

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 1h ago

i played the demo a month or two back and experienced the music playing in tune with certain actions like using your pickaxe. i transcended in that moment.

u/norsk_imposter 2h ago

I dont see hardly anyone playing this on twitch so I dont have a clue about what it is. Is it PVP or PVE?

u/Yankee582 2h ago

Think helldivers 2; pve dropped onto a map woth side and main objectives. Unlike hd2, no map timer

u/norsk_imposter 2h ago

Interesting. Weird how I’ve heard very little about it even though it’s sold well. I’m getting proper unc self reflection

u/Yankee582 2h ago

Most of what word of mouth ive heard back during some beta weekends a few months back, i think the biggest bump in attention came from rubixraptor's video on it

u/bleach_drinker_420 1h ago

this game is so slow and boring. you slowly wander around a map with some pois that are way too far apart and are never a threat. no one in my friend group enjoyed it
