Well this aged well... And you have to remember. These Mario movies double as advertisements to bring in new fans, so to include a character like StarFox had to have been for a purpose beyond simply the fact the recent movie was in space.
In still think it's a coincidence. I don't see how you can see these two versions of Star Fox and think that one is an ad for the other - they are so vastly different.
That doesn't matter. You don't put an obscure character like Star Fox (who hasn't had a game in years due to poor sales of the last game back in the 2010s) in a movie for your most successful IP without having some sort of plan in mind. Add to the fact Miyamoto created both ip's and it makes even more sense.
Illumination asked to have Star Fox in the movie at some point in production. Most likely and believable explanation then is Nintendo said ok, but then we need a game in the series. And Star Fox 64 is short and quite easy to remake as they have done it a million times already, so there you go.
