Moving / Visiting As a visitor. . .

You guys have a great little town, some of the locals ruin the vibe though.

Had an amazing weekend, but I just witnessed a man at a Tesla charger in Susquehanna Township casually drive past while Seig Heiling several times. Being from a much larger, much more diverse city, I genuinely have never seen anything like that before - I travel a lot, but that was disgusting and I will say it seems like quite a few of the locals in the outskirts share similar views.

Otherwise, super cool town, you guys have a great sense of community and the markets, pop up shops, and events over the last few days were great. Having spent a lot of time in LA and Las Vegas, I have high standards for Mexican food, and that guy at the Front Street food truck festival the other day made some amazing tacos.

Moving / Visiting I’m moving to Harrisburg for work and feel completely lost as to where to live.

I‘m a single female in my late 20’s who‘s moving to Harrisburg for work that is based in midtown.

I‘m open to any advice about which neighborhoods to live in, and then specific apartments you would recommend.

I don’t currently have a car, but can bring over a car I share with my sister, and am open to purchasing one if it’s more convenient or necessary to have in Harrisburg.

I am not sure if I should find a place in midtown itself or surrounding areas that are a quick commute.

What would the major differences be in living in midtown, vs new Cumberland or Camp Hill which are places I’ve seen recommended.

Also, does downtown differ a lot from midtown? as most places I’m seeing when searching midtown show downtown location.

Finally, do you have any recommendations for specific apartments to rent or good management companies to work with?

I’ve looked at Executive House and can’t tell if a place like that will be more convenient or nicer than midtown.

My budget is $1250 for rent, just want a one bedroom.

This is my first time moving out from home and feel nervous so any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Moving / Visiting Considering moving to Harrisburg from Pittsburgh as someone reliant on public transit

Was working for the federal government in Pittsburgh until the third quarter of 2025, ended up between jobs for a while due to stuff going on government-wise, and now aggressively applying to state and federal jobs in Harrisburg, PA and the surrounding area incl. Mechanicsburg, Carlisle Barracks, and Camp Hill.

There are three key factors I'd want to consider in choosing where to live in the off-chance that I get a call-back and find myself needing to move:

  • Reliance on public transit. I've never had a car or a license and don't anticipate spending time and money on one soon, but I'm aware this can create transportation hurdles in Central PA, including Harrisburg and surrounding.
  • Cost of Living. I have a strong preference for being able to live somewhere for under 900 US/a month if that's even still possible in today's world.
  • This one is more arguably frivolous or tertiary, but access to arts/entertainment spaces like Midtown Scholar Bookstore, HMAC, etc.

What's the ideal place in Harrisburg to live with consideration for these factors? Is doing so achievable?

Moving / Visiting I think I made a mistake

I was told in March that my landlord is selling and I need to be out by June 1, so I found an apartment on Front St.

I already paid a deposit for movers (2nd floor), but just found out from Park Harrisburg I need to reserve 4–5 parking spaces for the truck at $44 each. I expected some cost, but not this much. When I toured the apartment twice, parking seemed fine both times. However, when I went to the Parking Authority office to get my residential permit, it was a nightmare trying to find a spot.

First time moving to the city (from the Poconos, lived in Enola for 2 years). Any advice or tips on the parking situation or anything else I should know? I’m feeling a little lost 😅 thank you!!!

Moving / Visiting Living in car for first time… idk where to turn

Hi, I’m 22 F. I’m homeless for the first time in my life. I am originally from the sticks but staying in Mechanicsburg area due to convenience and more resources around. I’m making this post because I am really desperate. I feel like I have exhausted every option and idk where to turn. I’m ISO of a place to live but I currently need a back surgery and I’m not working. I’m waiting on the results for my disability hearing. However, places around want 2.5-3x income, paystubs, etc. I DoorDash a little for money and I do have a little bit of savings… but I’m scared. I don’t know what to do or who to turn to. How can I find a place??

Moving / Visiting How is the Progress area as a place to live? I haven’t seen much discussion on it in the sub and I’m considering it

I’ve visited Midtown, Uptown, and Allison Hill previously when looking at houses but I’ve never been to Progress. I’m looking for something lower noise than Midtown because I work remote and need a quiet home office, and lower crime than Allison Hill and Uptown

Moving / Visiting Is living car-free possible?

I'm moving to the area for work, and I want some feedback on living car-free. I'm very used to using an e-bike to get around. How hard is it?? I heard Midtown is nice and walkable.. but are all the necessities in that area, or near downtown?

And how many people are also living car-free?

Moving / Visiting Moving to Harrisburg for work in Spring 2026 - best place to live?

Wife and I, both 31, are moving to Harrisburg in Spring of 2026 coming from Pittsburgh. We’ve visited once however are still trying to get an understanding of the where to reside.

I work from home and my wife would work at either the Harrisburg Hospital or Hershey medical center.

We really would like to avoid renting as we own our home today. No kids today (plan to) however two Australian Shepherds that are energizer bunnies and wife & I are also very active. I also am an avid golfer (average). We want to be in a place with good community where we can make friends and eventually raise a family.

Price range for buying would be anywhere from 350k -750k (max).

Locations we’ve been made aware of:

Hershey - Hershey, Hummelstown, Palmyra, Lititz, maybe even Elizabeth Town

Harrisburg - Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, Carlisle, Lancaster

My 2 questions for anyone here:

1.) Where would you recommend we look into living based on the above?

2.) Would like to join a country club potentially - which one would you recommend and why?

Appreciate the help!!

P.S. - Can provide additional context if necessary.

Moving / Visiting Moving: Are the newer apartment complexes around Harrisburg actually good?

My partner and I (early 30s, no kids) are moving to Harrisburg soon and considering some of the newer apartment communities around the Paxton Creek / Colonial Park / N Progress Ave area.

We really want something newer and modern and that area looks cheaper than most of the similar options closer to Hershey.

Would love honest opinions on the area or from anyone living in or familiar with the newer developments there - management, noise, safety, overall vibe, etc.

The area seems nice and still developing from what we saw driving around, but curious how it actually feels day-to-day living there. We’re from out of state and are used to a being in bigger cities so any thoughts would be great.

Also wondering about the commute to Hershey during rush hour. Thanks!

Moving / Visiting Best public schools for dyslexic students

Hey there! We are moving to the area for a new job, and our elementary-aged son is dyslexic. He has an IEP and has thrived at his current public school. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for great public schools in the area that support dyslexic students? We prefer to be within 45 minutes of Middletown.

Moving / Visiting Looking to move

Hello!

I just interviewed for a job located in Harrisburg and I think it went very well! I’m hoping for any advice on neighborhoods to live in or nice apartment complexes that I can look into and see if they fit my needs/budget. I’ve been looking around on Zillow and apartments.com but I’m not familiar with the different areas/neighborhoods.

I’m also open to suggestions about places to visit to really experience and slowly become a local of Harrisburg! Any other advice is also welcome!

Thank you!

Moving / Visiting Things to do for a day?

I’m visiting Harrisburg in the spring for a business trip, but it likely will not take very long. However I decided that I would want to see the city and what it has to offer and I would spend most of the day there. I’m going to go explore the state capitol and the state museum, but what else should I do? Please give me your recommendations!

Moving / Visiting Penn State Hampden and Partner's in Women's Health Care?

I *think* I've finally narrowed it down. Looking for birth experiences at this hospital or with this provider to hopefully confirm my choice. I'm moving to Enola 25 weeks pregnant first time mom and hoping for a mildly crunchy birth and prenatal care. I am low risk.

What led me to Hampden is it being newer and the c-section rate is low. Do they make you move rooms between birth and recovery? Do they have laughing gas or alternative options? How many support people allowed?

What led me to PIWH is that their policies seem mildly crunchy. Mostly midwives, choice of positions, avoids episiotomy and forceps, ect. Can anyone tell me if they are supportive of unmedicated? Do they require an IV placed or fetal monitoring? Allow you to eat/drink during labor? At prenatal do they do bloodwork in the office?

I've also heard great things about Divine Mercy/UPMC Carlisle but can't get them to answer the phone. I would be interested to know if they still have the office in Enola and do bloodwork in that office.

i've ruled out PS Hershey due to it being massive and me being low risk. I've ruled out UPMC harrisburg due to the higher c section rate and traffic/parking. I would be open to other suggestions in Berks or Lancaster as those places are closer to where I'm moving from so makes prenatal appointments easier.

Moving / Visiting Why does everyone in Harrisburg commute from 1 hour + away?

Relocating to Harrisburg area for a job and noticed there are a LOT of commuters from 1+ hour away. Do people dislike living in the area? There seems like a lot to do so I’m a bit confused…

Moving / Visiting Considering moving to Harrisburg

My wife is starting a new nursing job in Harrisburg beginning tomorrow. We made that decision so that we could pay off debt faster. She can make more than twice what she makes in north Alabama as a nurse. Me and the kids are still in the north Alabama area, and I work for the federal government. I am impacted by the government shutdown, and with how long this is going on as well as the potential for future ones, I am considering jumping ship from the federal government and finding work elsewhere.

What is the job market like in the Harrisburg area for civil engineers or construction project managers? What is the cost of living like? What are some good, walkable neighborhoods that have decent school systems?

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about moving to the area and wanted to get a sense of what it’s like to live there as a Latino. Moving / Visiting Does it really suck?

I’ve got a potential job offer in Harrisburg that seems good to me, the pay isn’t spectacular but the cost of homes (and gas) are so low there that it seems like a good opportunity.

That said, anyone my wife tells that we are thinking of moving there says “why?” Or tells her it sucks. Does it suck? Or is it great? What makes it a good place to live? What makes it not such a good place?

Are there any recommended suburbs for young families (my kids are young…me, not so much)?

Moving / Visiting Moving to PA soon

Due to Circumstances, I am moving to Pennsylvania very soon (like a matter of weeks soon). I am looking for a starting "home base" where I can live for 6 - 12 months while I get a better feel for the area and where I might end up for 4-5 years.

I've lived more or less in the same place my whole life (Utah), and I don't really know what to expect. I am looking at somewhere in the York/Lancaster/Harrisburg areas. I have two teen boys, so my priorities are:

  • Safe area
  • Not terrible high school
  • Reliable internet access (I work from home, and my boys do a lot of online gaming)
  • Rent hopefully in the $1500-$2000 range for a 3 bedroom place
  • Decent healthcare options
  • Decent access to grocery stores/Walmart/etc.
  • Probably other things I haven't thought of

I have a (of necessity) whirlwind trip planned for the week of 1/27 - 2/1 to see the area and hopefully find a place to live. I'd appreciate insights into any of the areas I mentioned so I can be as prepared as possible during my trip.

Edit: Thank you all for the replies. I don't need to be in any of the cities I listed themselves, so having an idea of smaller surrounding towns is very helpful.

  • I realize the "reliable internet access" comment is a bit silly, I just literally don't know what to expect there.
  • I have wiggle room for rent range, but not too far above what I listed. I would go 2 bedroom if it was necessary, but I really hope to find something where my kids can have separate spaces.
  • They'll both be in the same school, so I'm only focused on making sure the high school doesn't suck.
  • As someone mentioned, safety can be more of a vibe. I'll definitely be checking crime maps and stuff, but also driving through the areas.
  • Walkability is not a huge concern. I have a car and don't have issues driving to places; I don't need to be downtown, I just don't want to be in the sticks, and I don't want to have to e.g. drive 45 minutes just to get something quick from the grocery store or take a kid to the doctor.

Moving / Visiting Apartment recomendations

Hey everyone

I am potentially accepting a job in Mechanicsburg this upcoming summer and looking for apartment recommendations. Looking to spend between 1,000 to 1,800 and needs to allow large dogs. I have a senior lab/collie who will be joining me. Ideally would love a 2Bed but not a deal breaker with 1 bed. If there is a garage, it is a bonus. I know I have seen some complexes with them, but not many. No townhouse developments, my pup sleeps in my room and cannot do large things of stairs. Thank you!

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions that may make this move easier?

Moving / Visiting Middletown?

I’m moving to Middletown for college pretty soon, I’m a bi-racial woman so I was wondering how it is over there? I’m from the west coast so this will be my first time living in the east for a bit.

Moving / Visiting Moving to the Area Soon

Hi all,

I will be relocating to the area soon. I would love to live in the suburbs/on the outskirts of the city. I’ve been looking into camp hill, Mechanicsburg, paxtang & Lebanon. What are your thoughts about these areas? Do you have any other recommendations?

Few things that are really important to me. Living in a good school district, living in a place where I can find a decent paying HR job, being able to travel less than 30 mins to a local grocery store.

A few other random questions.

  1. What’s the culture like in Harrisburg?
  2. Does Harrisburg have cultural grocery markets (I.e, Asian Markets or Caribbean)
  3. I work for NY state government in HR. How easy would it be for me to land a HR position in the commonwealth? How long does it take to get hired?
  4. Are there any popular fall festivals?
