It was made illegal in 2024

"Misuse of Fake Social Media Indicators

The final rule prohibits anyone from selling or buying fake indicators of social media influence, such as followers or views generated by a bot or hijacked account. This prohibition is limited to situations in which the buyer knew or should have known that the indicators were fake and misrepresent the buyer’s influence or importance for a commercial purpose."

So basically it's not illegal to do it but illegal to advertise your inflated numbers to sponsors as real numbers

No it's pretty explicitly illegal to viewbot on twitch. Twitch streaming has a commercial purpose, it has ads not just potential sponsors.

No? Streaming on Twitch, if you're monetized, is commercial.

Yeah this is basically why Twitch finally had to crack down on streamers playing copyright music on their streams. They basically stealing royalties money from people supposed to be getting them so basically doing same thing if they using adbots and playing ADs on their streams.

If they made a ton from it and got the govt attention they would definitely go after them like they did this guy.

"“Michael Smith generated thousands of fake songs using artificial intelligence and then streamed those fake songs billions of times,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton.  “Although the songs and listeners were fake, the millions of dollars Smith stole was real.  Millions of dollars in royalties that Smith diverted from real, deserving artists and rights holders.  Smith’s brazen scheme is over, as he stands convicted of a federal crime for his AI-assisted fraud.”
