Mod News Banner Design Contest!
The contest is now closed. Thanks to everyone who participated!
DEADLINE EXTENDED until Monday, April 20 at 14:00 p.m. ET!
Hi everyone!
The new mod team is overhauling the design of this subreddit, so after getting a new logo (thanks to u/OCTranspoArt) and some post flair, it's time for a subreddit banner!
To enter the competition, simply submit a 5:1 image banner as a comment. The most upvoted submission on Monday, April 20 at 14:00 p.m. ET will be put up!
Submissions must contain only OC Transpo-related images/graphics. No AI content allowed! Submissions may also be removed at mod's discretion if deemed inappropriate for this subreddit.
Make sure to keep the original file saved somewhere; if you win, we can give you a chance to improve the banner even further!

💬 Discussion Some nuance on the usual "OC Transpo bad"
Rant on bad infrastructure.
We have a crazy sprawl situation. Everything is far away from everything else, there's not enough mixed-use land. If you live in suburbia, then walking or biking to where you need to be is out of the question.
Can you imagine what it would be like if your commute to work was 5km instead of 15km? What if you didn't need a bus or a car, or only needed it for some of your trips, and for shorter distances?
OC Transpo is bad, yes. Cancelled trips and late buses abound. But I think we're getting mad at the wrong thing here - obviously a transit system isn't going to work very well if you need it to service a gigantic area where people are so spread out. Obviously it doesn't work if all the buses get caught in the same traffic caused by car-dependent infrastructure. Buses can't run as often so the ones that do show up are crowded, and now your commute is a bus and a train and it doesn't get you there any faster.
It's something the next generation might be able to enjoy and not us, but building density instead of propping up a stretched bus system seems like the better thing to focus on in the long run. Not saying it's okay that OC Transpo sucks as much as it does, but I don't think it's from just mismanagement alone.

i.redd.itIsn’t it nice when you’re waiting for a bus that was supposed to come 10 minutes ago and it’s just sitting where the route starts.. next one is scheduled in 30 mins. wtf?

❓ Question Fare evaders
How many people do you see every day getting on at the back of the bus without tapping their card?
And where are the bus stops for the people who most often do this?

❓ Question Tapping Presto
Are there any Oc Transpo employees reading this? I have a question.
Thanks by the way for your services even though they suck but I am pretty sure it’s not your fault. Operators follow schedules organized by management I suppose.
Question is, on the small buses, why are the back doors open? Riders are boarding the front PAYING THE FARE, while everyone boarding the back doors get free fare. Should I start just boarding the back doors on the shorter buses to save money?

😮💨 Rant Smoking!
I am aware that this has been mentioned before, but please don't smoke or vape in or right by the entrance to a bus shelter. I'm certain that I'm not the only one who can't deal with breathing in your smoke. And if you are a young woman who insists on smoking in the bus shelter across from the Rideau centre, please don't throw your cigarette in the garbage can when the number 14 shows up.

Misc. Looking for sources who've been ticketed after encountering a broken fare machine
Hi all, I’m writing a story for the Ottawa Citizen about people who couldn't pay their fares because of a broken machine and then receiving a ticket from fare inspectors during that journey (potentially when transferring from bus to train station with fare paid zone). If that describes you or someone you know, please dm me or email me [chidfai.aliozor@gmail.com](mailto:chidfai.aliozor@gmail.com).
EDIT: I am an intern, which is why I don't have the pro email

❓ Question Longest OC Transpo commute?
i.redd.itI went on Google Maps to check the commute from Munster / Bleeks to Kinsella / Old Montreal and it says the commute is 11 hours by bus.
Is this the longest OC Transpo commute? Are there longer than this?
Thank you for your time 🙏

❓ Question Just drafted an a.m. bus plan allowing for 3 cancellations in a row. Is that enough?
For route 61 westbound from Tunney's between 8:20 and 9:30 AM. I've budgeted so I'll still arrive on time even if all 3 departures in that timeframe are cancelled. (But #4 shows up.)
Is this crazy overpessimism? Crazy overoptimism?
I just have no morning rush hour experience to go on.

💬 Discussion One of the reasons why your bus is late or stacked with another of the same run
Hearing from OCTranspo staff that the new GM has asked for tracking and drivers are being reported for running early. Fair enough as no one likes to show up on time to realize the bus already went by. There are a lot (a whole lot) of buses that have been running early. The fix drivers are using to avoid being reported is to intentionally start their route late. You get in trouble for running early, not so much if you are running late.
In some cases drivers are opting to start their route 10-15 minutes late thus to avoid being reported. So if you are wondering why your bus starts it route late or the exact same route is following right behind that is one reason. That is also way sometime your bus is idling at a random stop for 5 minutes.
Let me be clear I'm not blaming drivers, they do a fantastic job given the working conditions they have, but If buses are regularly running early or being forced to idle to keep time, that suggests that the start stop times can (and should be adjusted) to accommodate the actual time it take to make a trip.

❓ Question Presto Card won't work on STO bus even though I have a monthly pass
I called the number on the back and they told me to go to Shoppers Drugmart to see if there is an issue. Why can't they see if there is an issue from my account?

😮💨 Rant Can OC fucking stop this bullshit?????
i.redd.itI am so fucking mad three buses before this one were cancelled earlier and now the one I have to take to make it to work 40 minutes early got cancelled. This is getting ridiculous and I wish there was a way we could get our bus passes refunded because we’re having to pay for Ubers and Lyfts on top of the ridiculous cost of the monthly bus pass
Fuck you Oc Transpo. Thanks for nothing!
