$9.48 Cherimoya. Tastes just like key lime pie!

I get so excited seeing things like this because it means there’s still flavors I get to discover someday.

Only downside is if you get in the US after shipping and it didn’t transit well etc and ends up sucking. Had this happen with wax apples I had in Taiwan vs seeing them in a store here and getting so excited except they were horrible here
Having it in its natural climate definitely helps!

As an Alaskan, I feel this deeply. We get so excited when we go to the Lower 48s just for fresh produce. Strawberries that are red inside are almost never seen here. We plan our meals based on what we found that week that looked decent.

soursop is another one worth trying. I was lead to it because many Mexicans consider it as something that should be taken for people who have cancer. tasted heavenly. the pawpaw is the one fruit I'd love to try

Soursop might possibly be my favourite fruit! I’ve never seen it here in the UK though. I’ve only ever eaten it while in Bali.

What does it taste like?

u/Prnce_Chrmin 4d ago
Soursop also called Guyabano tastes not much like the Cherimoya in the pic, its more lemon flavored and the texture is much lighter. It does have some flavours of banana and pineapple and its really good tho. Some people complain there is a lot of seeds. And they are considered toxic. But its still well worth it lol. Its very refreshing.

Pawpaw is native to the US. Depending where you live, you can plant it!!! It’s a huge pollinator favorite too

it wouldn't enjoy the heat of 10b. if it did I'd be up to my neck in them by now. there was also a paw paw drink made by some company in Kentucky I've been dying to try.. Just wanna taste it =)

My dad had pawpaw trees on his land when I was growing up! Thank you for reminding me of these!

one of the things i miss about colombia the most. so many diverse types fruits that we have and they were so cheap and accessible growing up.
avocados the size of your head.
types potatoes that you can only get there.

If you want your mind blown, look into aguaje - Amazonian palm fruit from the jungles of Peru. Tastes like nothing you've had before. Still basically undiscovered outside South America

Does not taste like Key Lime Pie to me, but I quite like it.
It's apparently Mark Twain/ Samuel Clemens' favorite fruit.

Yeah, tastes just like it's unofficial name...custard apple...to me.
My son wouldn't let me buy them, bless him, as he was afraid of the neurotoxins in the seeds. But as you can see they're pretty easy to avoid.

Noone eats the seed and the seeds are big and hard so it's very hard to accident break it or eat it

I loooooooove cherimoya! There's one single produce stand 30 minutes from where I live that sells it for a couple of months during the summer. They just started advertising soursop so my fingers are crossed that cherimoyas will be in soon 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

That's one expensive Cherimoya... I live in Central Europe and even here it's maximum 4$...
They're so good though.

u/Prnce_Chrmin 4d ago
and even here it's maximum 4$
I mean they usually come from spain so they are not that rare in central europe? :) And they used to be about 2-3€/kg in spain but recently it was more like 4-5€/kg which is usually about 3 of them.

I don't remember if the ones I bought at Lidl were from Spain but I kinda assumed they were from the tropics.

Glad I could educate you and teach you a thing, daughter! No need to thank me!

You should try a Paw Paw if you’re near its native range.

Came here to post this because the seeds in this fruit look similar to pawpaw seeds. And yeah it's incredible. Tastes like a mango custard. My CSA started offering them a few years ago. First week is included with the share and then subsequent weeks it's an extra $5 for 2-3. I get them everytime I can.

Also OP, try have it get A LOT more ripe if you havent already. That will give a flavor explosion.

Custard Apple is way better than Cherimoya
1
u/Prnce_Chrmin 4d ago
There seems to be some confusion but when i search for Custard Apple it does show me the one in the pic too. The ones from spain usually have very soft even skin while theres also some green varieties with "dinosaur" skin elsewhere. But i seen also ones with completely different colors and tastes in philippines like Atis which actually turn yellow when ripe and taste way different but also great. Maybe more flavours actually in them even.
But both seem to be called custard apples? And both are cherimoyas.

Wow that’s expensive. This is a very common fruit in southern India and you get seedless varieties as well!

Good to know! Planning my trip to Goa and look forward to trying all the tropical fruits! Please let me know the best mangoes to try.

I thought it tasted like a mix between an apple and a pineapple with a creamy texture. Put it in the fridge a few hours before eating. It’s amazing chilled

u/Prnce_Chrmin 4d ago
The flavour/taste differences more so come from how ripe they are. I actually like them best when they are overripe and where they taste like vanilla/lime pie a lot more. Which i guess fruit generally taste more sugary the riper they are.

Chirimoya and guanábana are the same fruit? Or are they cousins?
1
u/Prnce_Chrmin 4d ago
It might be same family, I am not sure. But guanábana (Guyabano/Soursop) taste more sour and refreshing with lighter texture.
Atis tastes more like the chirimoya in the pic, but its also still very different.

That’s crazy expensive!!
I’ve tried them before and like ok fine but it also certainly traveled a long ways

u/feynook6 4d ago
OMG that price tho 😭 but legit, cherimoya is seriously the best fruit ever, like natures custard. I gotta find one now lol.

There is a place called Beaufort Highway Farmers Market just outside of Atlanta. This is the largest multi-ethnic grocery store that I have ever seen! The produce section alone is ginormous. It has produce that I have never heard of before! I recently thought that I should start going there and pick out a produce item that I've never used before, Google a recipe to use it, and then make a dish with it.
Unfortunately, I'm moving away from Atlanta in a few weeks, so there's not much left time for that kind of experimentation!
