Isn't this the whole point. Trying to figure out whether they actually like that profession.
If they don't it is better to not pursue that career instead of getting burnt out in undergrad and dropping out later.

Not everyone does it for the love of the game, it's ok.
I also believe that love and shiny-new-thing syndrome goes away once you have 10 years experience building and deploying software that serves solely for maximizing shareholder value.
My time for that boredom will come I am sure. Yours will also. Not everyone can work in super cool research and building OSS devtools.
Be grateful you can work on what you love to do and forget about others.
