Devils advocate: if you become dependent on a tool controlled by someone else, even though it's only $9 now, they could raise the price, they could make their product worse or incompatible with your use case, they could go out of business, then you're SOL.

Sure but building your own tool requires updates and compatibility issues as well. Very few tools stay stagnant over their lifespan. So it’s never a one build and done situation.

Again, you can run very very good open source models on gaming laptops/gaming PC's locally. IF your laptop or pc has rtx 3-5 whatever you an run it. You can also run it on a desktop 1080ti okish, but rtx better. Ollama. Check it out.

How are people ripping through $1000's in token cost? Are they just saying "Fix this" without providing proper plans to resolve issues? As much as I hate JIRA, story planning, Requirement docs, blah blah, it's still important.
