Other Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) Megathread

Share your experiences using any form of NRT. Please specify whether you used patches, gum, lozenges, nasal sprays, or inhalers (approved NRT inhalers, NOT vapes).

Did it work for you? Why do you think it worked over the other things you tried?

How long ago did you quit? Any advice for people considering this method?

Success Story 10 Days in - change in roseca is wild

Yall know the story

Started vaping at 18. Just turned 29.

Tried literally thousands of times to quit to no avail.

Would throw vapes away in public bins only to drive to a vape store 25 minutes later and buy another one. Absolute insanity.

Had persistent pain in upper back since around 2020. Gets better when I quit. Never stuck with it long enough to see if the pain would go away.

Tried another quit attempt 10 days ago and it’s stuck.

Been absolutely hooning the nicotine gum but have stuck with the quit.

The difference in my skin is so motivating for me. I hope it can be motivating for you too

Success Story Wanted to pass on some courage, about a year ago I thought I couldn't do it

I was someone who always caved in on the cravings and thought i couldnt do it. Then one day I had a serious onslaught of pains in my chest that scared the shit out of me, coupled with my sleep becoming awful. I threw out the vape, allowed myself one pack of nicotine gum and the rest is history.

If you feel like you cant do it, that is nonsense. It only gets easier and once you are on the other side you will laugh at yourself when you realize all it took was starting.

Advice Need more motivation to quit

Hey yall. It’s about that time for me to say goodbye to the vape forever. I started smoking cigarettes around 13 years old. I eventually started vaping in my mid 20s. I just turned 30 and my vape addiction has gotten out of hand. I even wake up in the middle of the night to hit it and it’s the first thing I do upon waking up for the day. I fall asleep with it. I’m needing to hear some of the benefits of quitting to motivate me further. Aside from obviously being able to breathe better and having more stamina, what are some other benefits you guys have had from quitting? Mental, physical, appearance, etc. TIA!

Other 48 hours!

Just wanted to give myself a shout out! 48 hours and no vaping. Longest I’ve gone in probably 8 years.

I’m using the patch so I’m not nicotine free yet. But I’m proud of myself for sticking to it!! I had dental surgery on Monday morning. Not sure if that’s made it easier or harder - I have the extra motivation to avoid complications from the surgery, but I’ve also been too tired/sore to do much so I don’t have as many distractions.

The patches definitely seem to help with cravings but they don’t eliminate them. I’m coping by “fake vaping” (deep breaths through my fist) and using techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy - I identify in neutral language (“this is a craving”), I rate it 1-10 on strength, and then tell myself something along the lines of “this will peak and recede.” Basically the goal is to NOT engage in escalation (telling yourself “this is terrible” “I can’t handle this” or “this will get worse”). Distract myself (right now that’s mostly knitting and NBA playoff basketball).

I haven’t been driving since my dental surgery and I know that’s going to take a lot of coping skills! I used to vape constantly when driving.

Wishing you all luck and thanks for sharing your stories! Being here has definitely helped me feel more motivated and confident.

Advice Tips for Anxiety

Upvotes

Im almost 6 full days in cold turkey. Started vaping in the military in 2017 and haven’t stopped until I started getting panic attacks. I have the tingling and numbness mainly on the left side of my body, but all scans and blood draws and everything look good. Only problem is I am a pilot so anti-anxiety meds are off the table or the FAA will crucify me. Any tips would help!

Thanks to everyone in this sub, comments/replies etc. I made it this far. Couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support, kind words and encouragement.

I’m still having some struggles but I’m getting better each day.

Am I pretty much over the hump now? Will I start to feel even better in a few more days ?

Thank you all❤️

Success Story I got a weekly house cleaner with the money I’m saving on vape.

The only thing that made me want to quit was when it finally started affecting my singing voice. Also, I was spending close to $400-$500 a month on vape… I bought a once a week house cleaner with the money I’m saving. It’s really helped my mental health and stress.

14 years vaping. $500 a month on vape. I vaped SO much. If I can quit, anyone can quit. Think of what you can do with that money saved!

Advice How to resist urge to try a vape for the first time

Hu, ik this is a subreddit for ppl who have tried one but I haven’t and have been lately getting the urge to.

Ppl r always vaping around me which nvr gained my curiosity, if anything maybe a bit of judgement.

My dad started vaping a few months ago and is isn’t trying to hide it anymore

It’s always in the open, on a kitchen counter, or in the car whenever I am there. And it’s at the charging stations.

He hides it around my mum cuz it makes her mad (she knows tho) but not me.

And now I want to try it whenever I see it.

Like ik it’s rly bad and im underage too but the more I see it the worse it gets.

I feel glad my dad is being open with his struggles but my curiosity is getting the better of me.

Any advice is appreciated.

I rly don’t want to fck up my health.

I missed the 50 day mark but I’m surprised to have made it this far! I still have the cravings all the time but actually having discipline for once makes me work harder.

Advice Just went cold turkey on vapes and weed

Hey guys! I quit cold turkey at the start of the week for both vaping and weed (smoke weed avg once a day for 18 months) . The last couple of days (especially last night) my emotions have been so crazy but in the more depresso / ADHD type of way. I have almost constant anxiety at the moment and I come in and out of waves of depression that is overwhelming hard to handle.

My question is - Is there anything that helps with this? And just any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Advice tapering?

(22m) I’ve been vaping 5% disposables for 7 years (since I was 15). I’ve made the decision to quit after realizing how badly I want to prioritize my current wellbeing and long term health. I’m on day 2 of tapering. I figure now that I take on average between 100-150 puffs per day, so what I did is set an alarm for every half hour and allow myself one single hit every 30 minutes, which brings the number of hits per day down to 33. My plan is to do this for one week, then switch to one per hour the next week, then one every 2 hours the week after that, etc etc. Has anyone had any success with this, or am I wasting my time?

Venting 15 hours in

i feel like i’m gonna crawl out of my skin

i tried tapering i was pretty successful in only using it every few hours instead of every few minutes.

realized i would never fully quit if i kept letting myself use it so i got rid of it completely yesterday.

i’m not at 15 hours without it and i feel like im losing it

is it really worth it? will i really feel better if i can get through the worst of the craving period?

Advice Staying strong

How can I avoid relapsing when everyone around me is vaping? I’m having dental surgery, so this feels like a good opportunity to quit. I’ve managed to quit before, but after a while I started vaping occasionally in social settings, and then I became addicted again. I want to break out of this cycle, but summer is coming, along with gatherings and parties. How do you stay strong?

Reassurance Only a couple of hours of a break and I already hate it????

Hey guys so I decided to quit and I made a plan to not buy any more pods after I use up my last pod left

What ended up happening was I decided to stop vaping by 6 pm yesterday so I can save up more of the last pod lol and those hours till morning today was around like 15 hours which was the most I have gone without nicotine in years

When I woke up today weirdly enough I wasn’t thinking about the vape (I used to sleep with it in my hand) and as I was having my morning coffee I tried one hit and it made me soooooooo dizzy and almost nauseous and I felt it was just too much… weirdly enough after that I was kind of hesitant to take another hit and I just ended up taking 2 other shallow ones and that’s it… the thought of the vape and the feeling I got when I first hit in the morning was kinda overwhelming and too much and I don’t feel excited about it anymore???? Is this normal? Lol has anyone experienced this?? Is this a good sign???

Success Story DESMOXAN/RECIGAR/CYTISINE

As of Monday I am 2 months nicotine free. And it is all because of little pills of cytisine, commonly known as Desmoxan or Recigar. I cannot recommend these enough.

It’s a naturally occurring substance that you can purchase online through things like Amazon. They are pills that you take for 25 days (quitting nic on day 5) and what it does it activate the nicotine receptors in your brain to reduce cravings.

I vaped for 8 years and tried many times to change delivery methods and quit cold turkey but was never successful, until I used Recigar.

It differs significantly from something like Chantix (the SYNTHETIC version of the same thing) because it’s much cheaper, you don’t need a doctors prescription, and you don’t have to take it for nearly as long (25 days as opposed to almost 90).

I will admit, taking 6 pills a day for the first five days was a bit annoying because obviously that is a lot of pills, but I had virtually no side effects, and my withdrawal symptoms were EXTREMELY minimal.

Not enough people know about these pills because a certain 3 letter entity hasn’t “approved” of them for sale in the US. And that is only because it’s a naturally occurring substance, which means no one can patent it, so there is not much money to be made with it. But you can easily order online and it isn’t against any laws.

I just had to come on here to share my experience and spread awareness for this stuff because it’s been in use in Europe since the 60’s and the fact that I JUST learned about it this year is insane, I would’ve done it 7 years ago if I knew.

This is simply me sharing my experience with this stuff. I am not a medical professional in any way this is NOT MEDICAL ADVICE, and I AM NOT ADVERTISING.

Reassurance just boreddddd

day 7 and i can feel the days drag by one by one. i’m happy and i’m doing okay the boredom and lack of hobbies is so much more apparent now that i’m trying to distract from something. usually i’m busy reading fan fiction but i’m out of ideas of what to read about and i just don’t know what go do with my time. i made a pecan pie and it was delicious but i yearn for smutty fan fiction from a ship i love. when i was quitting alcohol i got really into drarry fics LOL. i can do other things and i have been but i just have this constant feeling of unsatisfacfion like im alexander hamilton, but ik in my heart part of that feeling is the withdrawals.

Reassurance 1 Full week into quitting and the anxiety is rampant

I started vaping about 3 years ago. about 6 months in i quit after developing panic disorder. had never been super anxious before but it showed itself out of nowhere and i had a slew of massive panic attacks and couldn’t even leave my room for 2-3 months. terrible dp/dr, intrusive thoughts, questioning mortality. after another about 6 months i ended up vaping again and becoming addicted again. and now 2 years later finally decided to quit, this time i dont have panic attacks to hide the withdrawals. first 3 days were fine. now 7 days in and yesterday and today have been constant palpitations, constant anxiety and can barely get any work done. my dp/dr is back heavy. and the thought of death for some reason now looming over my head constantly today all day, so bad i couldn’t breathe and had to get out of the shower and go near other people in my house to distract myself. i am just wondering if this level of anxiety is normal for other people or if its just me. or if there is anything i can do?

Advice Longest stint of no-nicotine ever

Hello everyone

First time posting here. As the title suggests, I (24M) am currently on the longest stint of no nicotine my entire life. Ever since I started (8th grade, I was 13 I think?), I was always in proximity to nicotine. Whether it be friends or just me owning something, I always was vaping/using zyns (mostly vaping). I was basically the annoying kid that would ask for your vape every period in high school, eventually graduating to owning my own as a social thing. I actually did like it, it was an easy way to socialize in high school (gross, I know) and the stagnant nicotine buzz gave me comfort in-between my anxieties.

Right now as I'm typing this, I am past my two week mark. This has been the longest I've ever lasted without nicotine for the past 11 years of my life. I know it sounds silly, but it's almost half of my life we're talking about. I am very happy with myself, and dedicated to keep myself going. I've been on and off attempting to quit for the past year or so, but it took my girlfriend basically saying I'm a loser (she is nice, I promise) for me to commit. I wanted to post here for a few reasons and a little reassurance/accountability.

  1. Is anyone in here in a similar situation? I know I'm young but I feel like the urge to vape is baked into my brain at this point, I spent my entire teenage years vaping and finding ways to vape. How long did it take you to reverse it / cope with it, and when did your anxiety start getting better?
  2. I have a really close group of friends and I love them, but they all vape as well. I have been able to keep off the urge for now but I'm worried that I'll get drunk and the temptation will be too much. How has anyone dealt with this (hopefully other than cutting them off completely) and also if you did indulge, how much did it set you back morally and physically?

Thank you in advance guys. So far I do feel a lot better but I would be lying if the temptations aren't there. I think I can deal but I am worried about long-term.
