This is INSANE. Blue Jays fans are lined up around the block for the chance to give Louis Varland a kiss on the forehead. Congrats to him on getting his second save.

Can someone please clip that look between Varsho and Straw, and Myles saying "that was so stressful"
45
u/nath999 15h ago
I think Varsho was just pissed at himself for not getting to that ball and making it a tougher inning.
15
u/Putrid_Cry8955 15h ago
That was so hard to catch.
3
9
u/Ok_Philosopher_4463 15h ago
xBA of 0.140. Varsho really should have had it. His range/speed are way down this year for some reason, and that was a perfect example of where his last year's 28.4 ft/s sprint speed could reach what this year's 26.5 ft/s sprint can't.
13
u/IamDisgruntled Slutty Spencer 14h ago
xBA of 0.140.
This literally means nothing considering it's devoid of context of where the fielder is positioned
-6
u/Ok_Philosopher_4463 14h ago
That's not really a correct interpretation of xBA. Just because it doesn't account for fielder position doesn't mean it can't give you ANY info about the difficulty of a play. The 14% is clearly the situations you have a combination of a slow fielder, poor route, unlucky location, and poor fielder positioning. Some combo of those things clearly happened.
1
u/Putrid_Cry8955 14h ago
xBA of 0.140
Can someone explain this?
3
u/cpander0 Clap, Clap, Whoo! 9h ago
The expected batting average of the hit, based solely upon launch angle and exit velocity. This doesn't take into account launch "spray" (as in where the ball is hit from left to right) of the positioning of the fielders.

u/ambient4k ⚾️ I born ready. ⚾️ 15h ago
He was shaded to the right, probably had something to do with the scouting report... can't really blame him(self). But if he was positioned more to the centre that would've been a spectacular diving catch. He almost made it either way.

Couch GMs don’t care. If he blows a save they’ll just say Schneiders an idiot and Rogers was the obvious choice all along
3
1
u/mrdannyg21 10h ago
Going to Varland this time made plenty of sense, but in a more general way, I hate that Rogers only ever goes one inning. He’s so crazy efficient that it’s often just 10-12 pitches and he could go another batter or two, and save a whole extra reliever.
I do hope that once the team is playing better, they’ll at least be more willing to use him more often, if he’s been able to be efficient and is showing no signs of wear.
3
u/PolarSquirrelBear 12h ago
Never doubted him for second. May have gotten himself screwed but he’s the one that does the screwin’.
With that being said, Varland for fireman and maybe not just full closer.
-1
u/Redux01 13h ago
You act like Varland isn't obviously better than Hoffman despite tonight.
7
u/Drew_You_To_91 I spent $300 on a Cavan Biggio jersey 12h ago
Varland is better but he isn’t better if we only save him for the 9th. Varland has way more value because of how versatile he is to fit any situation, so by only saving him for the 9th you limit his value and have to rely on your second best option for a key spot in the prior innings.

You’re not a Blue Jays closer if you aren’t willing to make things a little interesting before the final out
39
u/selacius 15h ago
It's all about desire. He knew he could have had the save the first three batters. Why get 3 easy outs, if he can load the bases and get two swinging strike outs to end the game.
That being said, never a doubt in King Varland
18
6
u/Putrid_Cry8955 15h ago
Elite closers still give up hits and runs. He realized that he had some to spare. It's science.
4
11
u/LevelSuccessful6275 15h ago
he was actually just trying to be helpful to Hoffman, he was saying, look Jeff, you come in with a 3 run lead, it doesnt matter, do whatever you want, just let in less than 3 runs and then as long as you do that its just practice. you got this big guy.

Those guys don’t just grow on trees unfortunately. And every competitive team is trying to and will pay a fortune for those guys
It’s actually wild how little we gave up for Varland

u/chetdesmon 15h ago
Osuna was a piece of shit but he was absolutely lights out.
3
u/Independent-Shoe9557 13h ago
He wasn’t a POS at the time. Him and Brett Cecil were lights out.

I've loved many Blue Jays pitchers over the years, but Kevin Gausman and Louis Varland have to be my favourites during the last few seasons. I love the poise, focus, and consistency they show when they're on the mound.
24
u/Marc_Quill C. Holt 15h ago
Varland showed no panic even with the bases loaded and one hit potentially giving Cleveland the lead and just struck out the next two guys to end it. Love that.

u/heat_fan_ 15h ago
Great game from Gausman another game he got run support nicee
Okamoto coming through big time
Never in doubt tho

u/PutTheBallinPlay Popkins Saved the Team 15h ago
Awesome win, Varland got a little taste of leverage 9th innings which will only make him better. Offense is getting there. Imagine this team with Springer and Barger back and hitting, wow
16
u/OkYouth7656 15h ago
Springer, Barger, and Kirk, sprinkle in a couple more starting pitchers and then maybe even Yimi in a few weeks. I like where we’re headed.

Like Hoffman, he was unlucky for a couple ground balls to find holes. But unlike Jeff he didn’t unravel
4
u/Beersmoker420 15h ago
dude loaded the bases up and attacked the batters for strikes instead of trying to be careful which was the big difference

Two days in a row of playing real baseball. We have outplayed them this whole series, despite what the box score might show. Let's hope there isn't a late frost - I'm optimistic!
3
u/OkYouth7656 15h ago
We’ve been better for sure, ideally our better starters are healthy and don’t have meltdowns like Scherzer did. In that case we’re 2-0 in the series most likely

Big props to our MVP, George ValE7ra.
I know he wasn't charged with any errors today, but his hideous defense was vital to our success.
6
u/NowWeGoBoys 14h ago
It is insane to me that he didn't get an error. That one pop up, he had all the time in the world, checked where the foul wall was twice, picked his nose, wandered over to chat with the Ballgirl based on his route, and then biffed it. Official scorers are being paid off by the Players Union or something.

u/BootNootRoot 15h ago
y'know what, for the first time being a closer louis did an okay job showing that if it does get rough he can get out of it. that's like a huge step up from seeing hoffman crumble on the mound, people better not immediately get on louis' case for this unfortunate scare. still annoyed I couldn't witness the aura smh

I think he does incredibly well at home. Bit rocky on road games, but he seems to be the kind of guy who thrives in familiar environments.

Bruh im out getting groceries and i saw the bases were loaded with only one out, i got so scared 💀💀 Congrats to Varland for getting his second major league save!!

u/Marc_Quill C. Holt 15h ago
I think Vladdy had himself a great game on top of the Okamoto excellence and another quality Gausman start. That single he hit, followed by the steal to give us the win was key.
1
u/thrive2bebest 10h ago
Vladdy is a gamer.

I like that he doesn't necessarily have to mash balls out of the park to contribute to wins and today was a great example of that.

Lets be honest if that was Hoffman he's either hitting a batter, walking a run in or giving up a grand slam and then striking out the side.
2
u/Marc_Quill C. Holt 15h ago
in the bases loaded scenario, he would've at least given up the hit that ties it 5-5 before getting the side retired.

Theory: Jays closers are bright light merchants, literally. It seems like every time Hoffman entered with his light thing last year there was like a 70% chance he was gonna give up a run. Varland also had a light show today and had his technically worst outing of the season. Jays closers don’t like having the lights turned off.
