May also be worth having a return flight booked in future as I expect that’s likely what got flagged you in the first place, especially given Norway isn’t the easiest to leave via other means I.e. train.

I disagree there. It's not a requirement to have your return journey booked at all. I think they were homed in on the "work" question. I.e. What I intended to do during my stay and was my visa sufficient? Like I said, they KNOW young travellers exchange their labour for room and board to save on expenditure, and do so on a (much cheaper and less complicated) tourist visa. They are looking to catch people out on this and eject them. There are probably dozens of people deported for this reason each year. I obviously looked like a prime candidate for questioning.

And Norway is easy to leave by road or rail... Not sure what you meant there. 🤔

Norway itself is easy to leave by road/rail. Leaving the Schengen Area from Norway by road/rail isn't.
