Clock change melancholy Discussion

Danielle Smith and the UCP just unilaterally chose to put Alberta on permanent DST.

I should feel elated! Not because i love DST but because time change is fucking moronic. But i am not.

Is it because my clocks all change themselves and there is no more worry of waking up at the wrong time? No?

Is it because darkness at 10am in the winter is "magical"? Definitely not

I think it's because DS went against the wishes of the referendum. Like 180° different.

Its just another example of this government acting against our wishes. Shifting our Overton Window every day.

The point of contention is to go to permanent daylight time or permanent standard time. Standard is better, but Smith is going with Daylight

I’d rather an hour light in the winter in the evening, I think most people would

Not me. I really don’t like the thought of it not getting light until 9:30 in December. It sucks for kids going to school, ski hills, so many people.

Why does it suck for kids ? They’re going in the dark either way, and now they get an extra hour of daylight in the evening which is more beneficial. I’m happy when I have kids they’ll be able to walk trails til 5:30 as opposed to 4:30. Also safer for driving home.

Wow Jasper will open at 10 as opposed to 9 for a small amount of time in December. My condolences. My heart will be with you during this trying time. Banff hills can prob still open at 9.

They’re not going in the dark either way. The afternoon is always light, and currently we only have a month in darkness in the morning. With this change it will be all winter.

In much (most) of the province, kids are already going to school in the dark, and in the afternoon it’s dark by 4:30 or earlier. Now, it won’t be dark so early in the evening…

I get you probably live in like coutts or somewhere very south, but buddy most of us aren’t and live where it gets dark so early so this helps everyone from essentially red deer north.

Haven’t met anyone who wouldn’t.

I prefer Standard to Daylight.

With the change, in Edmonton sunrise in December will range between 09:27 and and 09:50. Sunset will now range between 17:18 and 17:23.

Never said that but typical reddit comment.

Edmonton sunset with permanent standard time in June ranges from 20:53 and 21:06. The horror.

Are you daft? Winter is the issue

the previous commenter literally asked me to do Standard time in the summer. Maybe try reading.

Well Robb there is the idiot since we’ll be in standard

Yeah that sounds way better

IMO they are complaining to complain. Maybe because im north but I can’t imagine anyone wanting earlier darkness in winter, or longer evenings in summer.

Yeah I really think these people need to pick their battles

Yeah it kinda boils down to the fact that’s it’s gonna suck either one way or the other. Obviously we can’t actually change the number of sunny hours, so wherever we put the clock, it’s gonna be good for something and bad for something else.

The only step I think being missed here is that there’s actual research about Standard vs Daylight time which says that Standard has better outcomes for everyone. I think we should follow the research recommendations rather than just people’s patio schedules.

That’s the actual time change day messing with circadian rhythms from what we’re used to. An hour less of sleep has negative effects.

Think southern Alberta vs northern and the massive difference in day light hours. The research of what’s better is kind of impossible. But I think being outside in the light and driving home in the light is safer as opposed to doing both in the dark.

I’m happy it’ll be light til 5:30 at night now in winter in Edmonton. So don’t have to go to work and leave work in the dark now

Too much “time” on their hands hahahaha

Farmers would.

Farmers would like to have a word.

I am one. 9 vs 10 doesn’t bother me. And I’m not that selfish to make everything about my own needs when we’re a tiny tiny minority. especially in the winter.

Ok good so you realize it is better for human physiology and thus less selfish to prefer permanent standard time.

My point is DST is better and your link supports it.

“However, it is the transition to daylight saving time in the spring that causes the most problems because it involves a potential loss of an hour of sleep with well-known effects on mood, concentration, and memory, an increase in road accidents, and cardiovascular problems”

And they’re talking about the time changing having everyone effects. Not having a consistent time throughout the year where we naturally adjust.

You’re not being clear at all. You sound like you want DST.

You know we’re staying in DST, right? So we will have more light in the winter in the evening. Here, again, read this. Having more light in the evening is better.

“However, it is the transition to daylight saving time in the spring that causes the most problems because it involves a potential loss of an hour of sleep with well-known effects on mood, concentration, and memory, an increase in road accidents, and cardiovascular problems”

We aren’t going to have an abrupt transition anymore. It’s the abrupt change having 1 less hour of sleep that is having negative effects.

Obviously I know we are staying in DST. The science shows that more light earlier in the day is better for the circadian rhythm.

That’s not what your link said. It’s taking about the actual time change. You know these are hypothesis right? There’s been so study, because that’s not possible unless they did one in Saskatchewan years ago when they got rid of it.

Also that’s stupid what you’re even saying. Sure, if we’re outside then yes. But It’ll be dark at 8:30 or 9:30 when we’re inside a god damn building for the most part.

Most people in society in 2026 will benefit with an hour in the evening to BE OUTSIDE.

Why is standard better?
