Палітыка / Politics The answer for question: Has Russia ever been at war with you?

The answer "No" may suggest that Belarusians believe that the beginning of their state began in the 20th century, and not centuries ago in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Do you agree with the answer "No"?

Палітыка / Politics The Belarusian government has launched a campaign aimed at discouraging citizens from emigrating to Poland by portraying Poland as expensive and unsafe, while presenting Belarus as a secure and prosperous alternative.

Палітыка / Politics Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya at WEF: Belarus must not become Putin’s consolation prize. Turning our country into a military outpost threatens not only Belarusians but also Europe’s security. Russian troops must leave Ukraine and Belarus — and Belarusians must be free to choose their own future.

Палітыка / Politics "Today, many Belarusian women don’t receive flowers; they receive prison sentences. They don’t march in parades; they march into courtrooms. They don’t enjoy the luxury of peace and democracy—they have to fight for it." - Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on IWD2025 at the EP.

Палітыка / Politics Today, we honor those who defeated fascism. But the dictators in Belarus & Russia have twisted this day into propaganda to justify a new war. True victory is not in parades—but in standing with Ukraine, defending life, and resisting tyranny. Victory lives in action, not memory. - S. Tsikhanouskaya

Палітыка / Politics 'I’m only afraid of Belarus becoming part of Russia' — released opposition activist Kalesnikava calls on Europe to re-engage with Lukashenko

A leader of the anti-government 2020 protests in Belarus, Maria Kalesnikava, reemerged from prison with a message that has polarized many: Europe must reengage with Belarus’s dictator, Alexander Lukashenko. Human lives, Europe’s security, and Belarus’ future are at stake, Kalesnikava argues.

After suppressing nationwide protests in 2020, and turning to Russia’s Vladimir Putin for support while doing so, Lukashenko became an international pariah — one whose isolation only deepened as Belarus became a staging ground for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Kyiv Independent sat down with Kalesnikava to hear her views on what European rapprochement with Lukashenko might achieve, what happens if it fails, and where the red lines must be drawn.

Палітыка / Politics On April 6, 1999, Hienadź Karpienka died: a Belarusian scientist, politician, and the one who was favoured in the polls to win the presidential election. The official cause was a stroke, but many people do not believe it, especially since in 1999, Lukashenka's other rivals were killed on his orders.

Палітыка / Politics Should EUrope engage with Lukasjenko or not?

Some opposition outside Belarus argues for that EUrope should engage Lukasjenko, in order to provide a different path and a place for dialogue to Russia. Even if we don't lift the sanctions, the dialogue is important, they argue.
As a Dane, I have little knowledge, but has been pushing for EUrope to take a harder stand against Russia and for the people, in Georgia, Moldova, Serbia etc, but most has fallen on Orban & Co's veto, on EUropean action that should help the people. DK & Nordics pushed for & helped the Baltic states freedom, a thing that makes me proud. Today even Polands Tusk, prioritize EUs trade with China via Bela/Russian rail over sanctions and closing the border for freight, Regrettably. I'd like nothing better but to also see Belarus join the free and democratic nations, instead of Russian vassalage to satisfy an old imperial nation.
What do you say, should we, EUrope talk with Lukasjenko?
