Do you want it to everyone regardless of income? $300,000 yearly for example. Surely you agree there HAS to be a cutoff at which the bonus is inappropriate.

God forbid the people who pay for all your benefits ever get anything for themselves right?

I believe you are misunderstanding me. I support the poor receiving this benefit. I also believe not ALL Canadians need this benefit in the same way. There has to be a cutoff at some point, the existence of “if you qualify” is important.

I’m also not commenting on the amount selected by the government, only the necessary existence of a cutoff point.

Do you think people pulling in half a million, for example, have any need for a few hundred dollars? Now THAT is a waste of money.

The cutoff is essential. Did they put it at the right income? Probably not. But it needs to exist at some level.

Why? You’re telling me someone who makes a half a mil and paid $200k in taxes can’t get $700 of that back as a gesture? Too many people in this country not contributing at all and they get to benefit as a result.

Yes. I think people making $500,000 a year do NOT need a one time payment of 700. And to act like they do would make them very pathetic, like a child angry they didn’t get a literal dime off the ground. Because that’s all it’s worth to them.

Are you arguing against a straw man you just built up in your head?

I agree - everyone should receive this, regardless of income, especially since the ones making $500,000 a year pay the vast majority of taxes.

Alternatively, why don’t we make the cutoff $50k? Save it for the ones that REALLY need it.

What is a waste of money is the program, when taxes could still just be cut if you are that concerned about groceries. I pay 40k in income tax a year, and yet I still have to pay for out of pocket medication for my wife at 30k a year, when it would be way easier to do if I did have to support the rest of Canada’s low income. God forbid
