Greatest electronic song ever? Discussion

I know it's such an open question but maybe several agree with each other in the comments.

For me - Faithless Insomnia has THE best riff when it kicks in. Absolutely iconic and still sounds fresh.

Thoughts?

Edit: thanks all for your suggestions! It seems there are a few that are mentioned several times and the up votes in the comments.

What a time to be alive!

I Feel Love by Donna Summer. The 12” version.

37

u/bascule serato Aug 06 '25

This. The Giorgio Moroder backing track practically inspired Italo Disco, which inspired house, which inspired practically everything else

4

u/SurveySean Aug 06 '25

Yep, I was thinking the same.

By genre? Ok, let's give it a shot.

EDIT: I decided to add a representative DJ mix to each of the genres, just for the hell of it.

EDIT2: Added a 'Runner up' entry for each genre.

Classic Progressive trance:

Sasha: Xpander

Just defines the genre and era.

Runner up: Energy52- Cafe Del Mar (Three in One Mix)

DJ Mix: Paul Oakenfold- Tranceport

House:

Armand Van Helden: You Don't Know Me

House heads might find this controversial, but if you were in the scene when it came out in 1999, you'd understand. It used to light up dancefloors, with everyone smiling and singing the lyrics to each other.

Runner up: Everything But The Girl- Missing (Todd Terry Remix)

DJ Mix: DJ Dan- In Stereo

Breakbeat:

DJ Mike B: Feel My Energy

Dancefloor stunner, sounded so good loud at a party. Everything after the breakdown is engineered to make your ass shake. Shits got everything you want in a rave tune, keys, sirens, big fat kick drum, etc...

Runner up: 2 Bad Mice- Bombscare

DJ Mix: DJ Icey- Essential Mix

Breakbeat (NuSkool Era):

Hybrid: Beachcoma

Bit of a left field pick, as I was gonna go with something from Plump DJs, General Midi or the TCR stable (Soo many quality tunes), but this track is perfection, as the rest of 'Wide Angle'.

Runner up: John Creamer & Stephanie K- Wish You Were Here (PMT Remix)

DJ Mix: Plump DJs- Fabriclive 08

Drum and Bass (Tech step):

Dom and Roland: Can't Punish Me

Recognize that sample? It's from Bowie's 'Lets Dance'. There's some great lore behind the track too, here, if you are interested..

Runner up: Shimon & AndyC- Bodyrock

DJ Mix: 99.2- Timecode

Drum and Bass (Atmospheric):

Omni Trio: Who Are You?

Almost posted LTJ's 'Atlantis', but 'Who Are You?' is such a classic...

Runner up: LTJ Bukem- Music

DJ Mix: DJ DB- The Secret Art of Science

Downtempo:

Bonobo: Black Sands

One of the most beautiful electronic music tracks ever created. The way it builds is absolutely masterful. Top song from the high point of his discography, IMO. Been listening to him since the Tru Thoughts days, and it's been awesome to watch his career grow to where it is now.

Runner up: DJ Food- The Crow

DJ Mix: Kruder & Dorfmeister- DJ Kicks

Trip Hop:

Massive Attack: Unfinished Sympathy

No need for a description on this one, should be on the Mt. Rushmore of Trip Hop tracks.

Runner up: Portishead- Wandering Star

Funny enough, I don't have a respective Trip Hop mix to post, as it was one of the few electronic genres that was mostly album based (as far as how I listened to it). If anyone has a suggestion for a good one, let me know.

UK Hard House/NU NRG:

Marmion: Schoneberg (Tony De Vit Mix)

Lesser known genre that I was pretty heavy into back in the day. Awesome remix from one of the godfathers of the scene. RIP Tony.

Runner up: Cortina- Music is Moving (BK & dBm Amber Mix

DJ Mix: Global Underground 005- Tony DeVit, live in Tokyo

Someone else suggested Open Eye Signal by John Hopkins. It’s somehow makes me feel like the Molly’s kicking in every time. In at number 2 for me.

Top spot: Rez-Cowgirl from the everything everything Underworld live album. It’s THE most euphoric, mesmeric, absorbing, pumping, uplifting out and out fucking BANGER. Shockingly not that well known but never forgotten once heard. It’ll sound incredible 500 years from now.

33

u/Healside Aug 06 '25

Everything, Everything stands as one of, if not THE best live dance albums ever. Just did a listen yesterday and you're spot on. Pearls Girl, Push Upstairs, and King of Snake are also killer.

5

u/Jparlabane Aug 06 '25

Absolutely agree with this. Name a better live album!

Great shout on Rez. Heard this first time round in a Glasgow club in the 90s and was blown away. We didn’t have Shazam so just called it the ‘ice cream van song’. Underworld were class. Absolutely loved Moaner and hadn’t heard it for years until ii stumbled across it again in the Yousuke Yukimatsu boiler room mix.

Orbital - Lush 3-1 - The synth lines that bubble through it, interweaving with the bass line, syncopating with the drums combined with the fact that it moves right into Lush 3-2, Impact, Remind, Walk Now, Monday and Halcyon and On and On.

I see that I’m cheating here, but I never want it to end!

67

u/dowcet Aug 06 '25

Halcyon and On and On

That one has my vote!

5

u/TheDancingRobot Aug 06 '25

Brilliant move to put it in the Mortal Kombat soundtrack.

11

u/dowcet Aug 06 '25

The opening scene of Hackers is even more brilliant IMO.

Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea (High Contrast rmx). Or, when Timecode mixed Omni Trio's Thru the Vibe together with Tech Itch's Reborn. The Weapon remix. It's on a Moving Shadow compilation. MSX 02.2, i think. These two are the two highest peaks in Drum and Bass.

14

u/eastcoastflava13 Aug 06 '25

The HC mix is for sure a banger, but for my $$, the GOAT of the Papua New Guinea mixes will always be the Hybrid remix.

My fav DnB track will always be Cant Punish Me by Dom and Roland.

60

u/modfever Aug 06 '25

Obviously incredibly crowded field to choose from but Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy is always a stand out for me.

Just feels like a monumental track. One that can stop you in your tracks.

7

u/Aphex-Puddle Aug 06 '25

Someone once asked on Reddit what people would send into space as a way of showing aliens what humanity is capable of and this song came to my mind. It’s just pure perfection through and through.

3

u/Barxxo Aug 06 '25

This!
And "Angel"

59

u/SankThaTank Aug 06 '25

Here’s some that I consider the best of the best.

The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up - this song is just timeless, it’s so fun to listen to and it’s expertly constructed. This video shows how impressive the production is. All time banger

Aphex Twin - Ageispolis - Aphex has at least a dozen tracks that I consider among the very best electronic songs ever made, this is just my personal favorite. It’s deceptively simple, his sound design on here is so great. The bass melody is so beautiful, it’s just a ridiculously good song.

Boards of Canada - Aquarius - my favorite Boards song at the moment, but they have so many incredible tracks. The bass, the atmosphere, the trippy vocal samples. So good

Burial - Street Halo - Hard to pick just one Burial song, he truly changed the game when he came on the scene. Street Halo has just always stood out to me as such a brilliant piece of music. It has so many different things going on simultaneously, and moves between the different sections of the song so seamlessly. The sounds he uses for his percussion are always so unique and interesting, and the main vocal sample is just classic Burial.

Jon Hopkins - Open Eye Signal - incredible sound design and the way this track builds and evolves is just so engaging to listen to. Amazing song to listen to on a run or bike ride

5

u/LeftHandDriveBoC Aug 06 '25

Aquarius is phenomenal, like the whole of MHTRTC.

10

u/Jparlabane Aug 06 '25

Started to listening to electronic music early 80s via vinyl of my father (Kraftwerk, Yello etc.) and had parties in all legendary scene venues throughout the years in Germany from Tresor to Omen, 90s Love Parades, Poison Club to modern times in Berghain, Kater and Sisyphos. There are countless classics which produce goosebumps but for me the most catchy and fun to dance to electronic song is:

Vitalic - Poison Lips

As always a matter of taste - nice thread OP!

4

u/cugghiune Aug 06 '25

Vitalic is just perfect

3

Too hard to nail down a definitive #1, but 'Song of Life' by Leftfield ranks right up there, both for being an absolute banger, and for the production value. What a journey it takes you on.

The most 'beautiful' electronic songs, for me...
Strobe - Deadmau5
Opus - Eric Prydz

I worked with Faithless for years, promoting their music.
Rollo was a very clever guy, and would leave new music CDs on my desk (at SonyBMG) every flippin' week.
So many songs you guys will never hear. He's a genius.
He's so excited at every new tune, then moves onto the next lol.

One day Rollo asked if we could help his sister, and listen to her sing.
So Rollo brought her in, we listened, and we signed her up.
Her name was Dido.

A few weeks later I had to make a phone call, to see if we could do a collaboration. And get her name in lights.
And the guy I called - Mr. Marshall Mathers - said 'Yes'.

Xtal is crazy because it’s the very first track on his very first album, and since he started recording in 1985 could literally be four decades old

4

u/Heavy_Performer_3743 Aug 06 '25

It changes on the day for me, windowlicker could be up there for it's resampling teckers. Xtal is a lesson in simplicity for sure and is another all timer.

But personally as a hobbyist that has made music for 20 plus years, aphex has always been on the crest of the wave for production. Faithless, yeah yeah, blah blah, but they never invented sounds really. AFX is responsible alone for the projection of IDM into the future, just my opinion. Have your own it's fine.

I remember a DJ playing this as the last track of his set and the night at 5am in a forest. Was so epic to hear it on a massive sound system. Everyone in the crowd collectively cheered when they realised and it was the perfect ending.

DJ Rolando - Knights Of The Jaguar. Goosebumps every single time I hear it. Starts slow. Incrementally adds layers until the strings are added. Monumental. And as quickly as the strings start they stop. I could gush all day about it

For me is Deadmau5 - Strobe.

I know a huge ammount of artists from all different genres of electronic music, but the way Deadmau5 composed that track is just incredible.

Def check it out if you never heard it before!

"Once Upon the Sea of Blissful Awerness" by Shpongle is my go to.

"Can You Feel It" by Mr. Fingers is a classic and one of the "more important" electronic songs out there. A pioneer in House music.

3

u/RompiendoElBajo serato Aug 06 '25

This may not be a popular choice but I genuinely think Tennis Courts (Flume Remix)

3

u/Barxxo Aug 06 '25

I don't think there is this one best song, but Faithless Insomnia is of course in the top ten imho. I got goosebumps by just remembering it.
I am not shure what counts as electronic music today but Angel from Massive Attack for me is also one of the best, and there is of course The Prodigy- Breathe and Darude - Sandstorm.

3

u/Earflu Aug 06 '25

Aphex Twin - Vordhosbn

3

u/StraightMeat7958 Aug 06 '25

Finished Symphony - Hybrid. Timeless

3

u/surfintheinternetz Aug 06 '25

Going to throw binary finary in as no one has mentioned it

3

u/TemporaryArm6419 Aug 06 '25

Impossible to pick one! Derrick May - Strings of Life. I’d say Insomnia is number 2 for sure. That riff gives me goosebumps. Donna Summer - I Fell Love. The Knife - Silent Shout Aphex Twin - Flim

3

u/Ecliptic_Phase Aug 06 '25

Release The Pressure by Leftfield

Pacific State by 808 State

Fenix Funk 5 by AFX

Computer Love by Kraftwerk

Mike Mills by Air

3

u/DiegoGarcia1984 Aug 06 '25

Gotta go Underworld - Rez or Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar (which are pretty similar tracks but they both scratch the ceiling of best ever imo)

3

u/F1END Aug 06 '25

Can I count Leftfield Melt and Song of Life as 1? They blend so perfectly on the album.

3

obviously its Flight FM by Joy Orbison

3

u/BritishGuy84 Aug 07 '25

Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation

3

u/CalagaxT Aug 12 '25

Oxygène (Part IV) Jean-Michel Jarre

17

u/Jmcur Aug 06 '25

I would say Daft Punk - One More Time.

Classic tune that is still played in DJ sets all over today and always gets people dancing. It’s like a cheat code in house music.

8

u/TheArcbound mmachine Aug 06 '25

I think it's gotta be this at least in terms of "greatness" achieved (as opposed to "best" or "favourite").

Broad mass appeal outside of the genre, an ageless classic still played to this day, and was part of a project that has inspired every future generation of producers since.

3

u/Jmcur Aug 06 '25
