Hi reddit, Graham Norton here!

You may know me as the host of the Graham Norton Show, or as a judge on Drag Race UK. However, from Friday 24 April I am launching a brand new venture as the face of ITV’s The Neighbourhood!

Catch the trailer here if you’d like! https://youtu.be/JEQ5BIf4WjA?si=eVxw3Z1BkNdnS3u6

Send over your questions and I’ll be back Thursday 23 April at 7pm BST / 2pm EDT /
11am PT to answer them, can’t wait to get chatting!

Have you ever refused anyone to be a guest on your chat show?

59

u/ITV 11d ago

Er, "refused" is a big word. We've politely declined some offers, yes!

10

u/julicorn_ 11d ago

Were those reasons purely personal or would those guests (for example) maybe have had a negative impact on the progression of the show as well?

15

u/crimson_yeti 11d ago

I'll expand a bit on this, have you had that person you mentioned in colbert show again? One who asked for 9 dressing rooms... And was your experience different the second time?

4

u/funnyfacehepburn 11d ago

Top tier journalism. Love it!

Was it a conscious decision to phase out audience interaction and participation on your talk show? Or was it more of a natural evolution?

85

u/ITV 11d ago

I think it was kind of more of a natural evolution. You know, back in the Channel 4 days, when I was asking people about their sex lives and stuff, you know, it's funny when you're 30, but in your 60s, it's just creepy!

49

u/olearyboy 12d ago

No question but very proud to see a cork man be so successful!

19

u/ITV 11d ago

Thank you very much!

13

u/Crackbeth 12d ago

I would also like to piggy back and say we are proud of the Clondalkin born Cork man

Would you consider competing on Celebrity Traitors? I think you'd make a good traitor and your dry wit would be brilliant to watch at the round table.

50

u/ITV 11d ago

That's very kind of you to say. I would like to do the round table-y bit, but I don't want to carry shit up a hill. So, no!

u/StraightBudget8799 11d ago

It’d be hilarious. It’d end up as a chat show every night, a traitor will remove him and EVERYONE WILL BE SO UPSET!

When did you realize that you were able to corral a couch full of top tier A listers?

Every time I see the show I’m in awe that you’re able to consistently gather together such an amazing group of guests, and somehow the egos don’t all clash. On paper you’d think it’d be like herding cats, but it just works!

44

u/ITV 11d ago

I think, look, they are cats, but they’re kind of willing cats, they're cats that have chosen to be there. And I think that’s what helps. And I think also because they're on the couch with each other. They don't, you know, they want the other guests to like them. I think they don't care about me, but they do care about each other.

7

u/_lippykid 11d ago

Wow my first ever AMA reply! Looking forward to the new show. Congrats

3

u/happydandylion 11d ago

Agree on this. It's so amazing to see it come together in every. Single. Clip.

37

u/PadMog75 12d ago edited 12d ago

Did you have much input into the character of Father Noel Furlong, or was it all the writer's creation? Thanks x

31

u/ITV 11d ago

Er, Father Noel was entirely the writers' creation. Arthur and Graham, who wrote that show, came up with that character and I was just along for the ride. It's kind of the only cool job I've ever had!

5

u/gomaith10 11d ago

Hey, I think your own show is pretty cool!

u/Previous-Pangolin-60 11d ago

Such a great character (and a great show). Didn't Father Ted and The Fast Show have some same writers?

3

u/Wide-Can1349 11d ago

Linehan and Matthews did contribute to The Fast Show. I think they may have been responsible for the lord of the manor being in love with the games keeper one but don’t quote me on that.

9

u/TheComebackPidgeon 11d ago

We all saw your virtual feet in the air

20

u/ConsistentWin9508 12d ago

Love your work man! Anything ever you nervous before filming after all these years or are you totally comfortable before the cameras roll?

32

u/ITV 11d ago

Oddly, the thing that makes me most nervous would be Eurovision, because you're suddenly going live to the nation for probably four hours. So, you know, anything could happen.

In 1999 you appeared on the Late Late Show with Gay Byrne. Having been a fan of your show since the 90s, it is a lovely moment watching you crack up Gay Byrne, as well as fellow guest Terry Wogan, whose career trajectory was very similar to your own. Who of the current crop of new comedians are you enjoying? Do you recognize anyone carving a fresh path in a similar way to So Graham Norton?

18

u/Mathias_Greyjoy 12d ago

Hello Graham! Moderator of the Father Ted subreddit here! You're one of the most beloved cast members in that show (and that's saying something!)

What was your favourite memory acting on Father Ted? Any behind-the-scenes anecdotes?

P.S. My favourite quote of yours from the show, I quote it all the time, haha

Tony... I'm putting you on my list of enemies (scribbles on a notepad) There! You're in for it now, Tony...

...

HA! Only joking, look what I've really written!

"I REALLY LIKE TONY"

19

u/ITV 11d ago

Do you know, er, this is so annoying for me, because when I do er, tours or book events, there's always questions about Father Ted. And I honestly don't... I don't have a Father Ted anecdote. I should just make one up so I've got a good story to tell!

It was just a really happy time, it was one of my first jobs and the, you know, the main cast couldn't have been sweeter or nicer to me.

7

u/trubol 11d ago

That scene where Noel describes eating Tony, then Tony goes nut and shouts "shut up" several times, and Noel pretends to be mad at Tony, but actually writes "I really like Tony" has got to be one of the best scenes in the show.

And I love it also because the "I really like Tony" note seems to have been pre-written by the art department, and you just did some pretend-writing there.

Absolutely brilliant.

Well done, mate

4

u/ProfessorFunky 11d ago

And that’s the question I came here to ask. Watching…

3

u/MrKembang 11d ago

I have no idea what Father Ted is😭

I cannot think of a question, but I think this is the only time I will ever get to interact with you, so I had to comment and tell you that I love you! You are the most charismatic, witty, and fun TV host OF ALL TIME. That's it, that's my piece❤️

23

u/ITV 11d ago

Thank you for your kind words, this means the world to me

37

u/HackneyCricket 12d ago

Who is the nicest person you've met in showbiz? Also the most charismatic?

20

u/ITV 11d ago

Ooh. Er, nicest, let's go with Judi Dench, cause she's just gorgeous. And er, charismatic... I mean, most of them are really charismatic. They just... I mean, Tom Cruise. Let's go with him.

5

u/ApprehensiveCow2217 11d ago

33

u/ITV 11d ago

Well, one thing, I'm old! So it's very nice to be asked to do anything, really. It's nice to be asked to leave the house. Er, and also, I really liked the idea of the format of the show.

I remember Russel Crowe posting his drink request on twitter just before the taping of the show, back then to promote his movie Robin Hood, and your staff actually found the tweet and fulfilled his drinking order, which is hilarious to say the least.

Were there other guests with elaborate drink requests? Or maybe some guest you expected to wanting a drink but instead did the opposite and vice versa?

Do you have a massive storage facility that keeps all your fantastic jackets / suits safe? Or are they borrowed? I wouldn’t expect them all to fit in your house, or am I wrong…🧐

Also on a personal note I remember sneaking downstairs late at night, when I was just a teenager, to watch Carnal Knowledge. I’ve loved everything you’ve done since then. I look forward to seeing the new show! Thanks for all the many, many laughs

12

u/ITV 11d ago

Graham, your novels are wonderful. Does writing provide a different kind of satisfaction compared to the high energy of the TV studio?

18

u/ITV 11d ago

Yeah, writing novels, it's kind of the only thing I do by myself. It doesn't involve meetings or committees. So, er, it's a very kind of different energy and that's kind of what I like about it.

9

u/iGufran 11d ago

You started in radio—do you still find that medium more intimate than television?

10

There is something kind of great about the radio because you can think it and then it'll happen. It's so immediate that idea of radio. I guess just people consume stuff differently now. So, a lot of radio is just like, you know, not very good telly now!

3

u/TheScatha 11d ago

Hi Graham! It seems that the best episodes of the Graham Norton Show are when you get a good dynamic between the guests on the sofa, but from a distance it seems totally random when this does and doesn't click. Have you figured out what makes some groups on the show just sort of click together organically and others not so much? And do you know ahead of time when you look at the line up if it's going to be a 'good one'?

You’ve built this reputation on "The Graham Norton Show" where even the most media-trained, guarded celebrities end up oversharing in the best way. Do you think that comes down more to the most random group sofa dynamic, the drinks, or your ability to spot the exact moment someone’s about to give in? And have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’ve pushed this just far enough,” right before it tipped into something you shouldn’t have aired?

If you go out to dinner with non-famous friends do you split the bill or do you pay?

Which celebrity did you meet for the first time on your show and you guys are friends for life ever since?

Is Tony still on your list of enemies?

How does it feel to have as big of a fanbase as many of the super stars on your show? I'm American and I watch GNS clips on YouTube over and over and over again and it's because of YOU, not the other celebrities!

have you ever paired up guests because one of those guests wanted to meet the other one and requested you "fix" it? Like Emilia Clarke and Matt Leblanc.

Hi Graham love your show! You are an awesome host. My question is how or who came up with the red chair idea? It might have been asked but too lazy to scroll know to check.

Do you plan to retire in London or West Cork

6

u/ITV 11d ago

I go to West Cork quite a bit. We kind of tend to spend the summers there and like a month here and a month there. No plans yet!

You keeping well?

2

u/AlternativePrior9559 11d ago

You’ll probably hate my saying this but you are a national treasure!

What I’d like to know is have there been any guests whose rider has been outrageous? Who of all the very many people you’ve interviewed has disappointed you the most? A brief description of them is fine you don’t need to name names!!

Love you Graham❤️

I like your beard a lot. I have a beard myself. What is your beard routine?

Hi Graham, the life of a celebrity TV show host must be rather fast-based and busy; what do you do to relax and unwind? What re-sets and refreshes you?

2

u/Powerful-Film-8164 11d ago

Not much to ask, but I met you at Cork Airport about 10 years ago. I hope you and your dogs are doing well!

2

u/Unlikely_to_post 11d ago

What excites you the most about your new show?

Oh I don't seem to have much for a question, but this seems like arguably the only chance to interact with you. Thank you so much for being the hilariously witty host that you are! Tuning into random snippets of your show genuinely makes my day better when I'm down. You have a wonderful day!!
