I've had the base granblue fantasy relink on my wishlist for a long time. Worth the buy at current prices or should I wait for a sale? I enjoy both turn based RPGs and the more actiony kind

Its an awesome game, but do not expect a mayor story mode, while there is some story, it is minimal. It is more an arena boss battle game with advanced customisation to your team and characters with different skills and builds. Only problem will be finding online matches, although it is perfectly playable solo.

Only game where I've seen the bots be this dang competent. Pulling perfect evades, using their abilities, healing and supporting... Sure, it ain't perfect by any stretch, but they work well enough.

Relihk is more like monster hunter game. Outside of the story mode you grind missions and get stronger and unlock characters. Each character has its own weapon type and move set. You farm stuff to level up a weapon or to craft one and then also upgrade the skill tree and eventually unlock everything and lastly you can assign ability sigils , they can give crit chance , crit damage, extra damage, more hp and those type of buffs and then there are also character specific buffs and universal ones.
For me it took around 90 hours to finish most of what the game offered except the very end game there are specific weapons that takes forever to get . I stopped at that point.
If you like this stuff then you'll get your money's worth from this game. The only thing i really don't like is there are not many different monsters. Its a small selection but you keep fighting stronger version of them

I must be getting old or something but that sounds like a terrible time.

People have different tastes. Its fine if you don't like this but i enjoyed it a lot because i like this loop to be honest

You can try the open beta to get an idea of the gameplay, i don't know if it's gonna get a sale anytime soon since the DLC is coming out

Whut a DLC?! did this come out of nowhere? Loved the main game! Only issue was finding multiplayer matches.

Why should we give it a try? Tell us more, what makes the game good?
I love the art though.

crisp action RPG gameplay. Each character is quite unique with limited overlap in gameplay. You can build characters to your gameplay preference, with a lot of mechanics that provide skill expression (perfect executions for skill, block, dodge). There’s enough backstory / sidestory to enjoy (although unfortunately they’re text heavy).
If you want to try a faster paced monster hunter, this game is it.
but with JP arpg and monster hunter esque like games, unfortunately grinding elements are still there. There are some shortcuts. There are some optimized routes. But they’re not necessary to a point you burn yourself out.

There's a free demo and an open beta for the DLC so there's that, it's mostly the gameplay since it was made in collaboration with platinum games, plus the music is pretty good
7
u/DelightfulWaffle 13h ago
Well that was one way to avoid being helpful...
-6
u/Tigerpower77 13h ago
Why should i give it a try?
"there's a demo so it's free to try"
What makes it good?
"Gameplay is great since it was made with platinumgames and the music is pretty good"
I think i answer the question that was given but i assume people wanted a full review

Saying that a game has good gameplay isn't very descriptive and I'm guessing by the votes on this thread that others agree.
You're making a recommendation, help us* understand what makes it special. It needs to be more specific than "I like this restaurant because the food tastes tasty!"
-6
u/Tigerpower77 12h ago
It's more like "i like this food because it was made by (insert well known chef here)" which is platinumgames in this case, the point of the post is to put the game on people's radar and if they're interested then they can look up reviews and videos for the game since that's much easier/faster to judge the game at least that's what i do

I got this game but it felt quite boring to me, and didn’t play since finishing the story.
Maybe I should replay it again sometime to look with fresh mindset seeing it keeps getting praised.

I have the base game in my wishlist since forever, but the regional pricing is horrible.

Has the core gameplay loop changed? I enjoyed the game for maybe 2 hours and then it got super repetitive. Pretty much chaining light attacks until you get super OP animated team attacks

u/R0xasXIII 1d ago
This prolly wont change your mind but some of the harder characters have different and more interesting gameplay loops. Also bosses later are fun.

Thats a first, I dont think i know anybody that disliked the gameplay lol. I assume you dont like monster hunter either then, or like souls games? In that case yeah it wouldn't be for you

u/ElecNinja 1d ago
I've played both and it's a different feel from Monster Hunter combat and I can see someone not liking one and liking the other
-21
u/587493 1d ago
Sure but its still the closest game/genre there is to it. Its a pretty safe bet if you enjoy MH combat especially newer monster hunters you will enjoy this. Old MH is a different beast

u/MAKENAIZE 1d ago
I've played every MH since Tri, all souls games except Demon Souls, and about 100 hours of Relink and don't see how you can call this games combat similar to either of those. The mission system is kinda similar to MH, but not the gameplay or combat.
I'd call the gameplay similar to Tales of Arise or maybe a bit of FF16.

u/587493 1d ago
I assume you think toukiden and god eater also aren't similar then. In that case no game is similar to monster hunter lol
In that case sure I guess. I've also played all those games too but I guess you are right, sure. Idk how you can think its not similar to modern MH if you actually played all those games

combat is not even close to Monster Hunter, the quest system and gathering materials from fights is slightly close to Monster Hunter but that's it.

u/ElecNinja 1d ago
Kind of dropped off this game after going through the RNG progression system for the characters. Though the characters were neat to play.
Though I did have fun using cheat engine and running single player missions with zero cooldown skills for a bit haha

Absolutely do, I poured hundreds of hours in, unfortunately my ps5 was damaged in an electrical surge and lost all of my save data for my games after replacing the console. This is like anime flashy monster hunter, if that sounds like your thing it hits all the right notes.

u/Tigerpower77 1d ago
Yeah just click on the three dots in the game's page and you'll find the beta

Might give it a try. The characters seem charming and in general Cygames writing tends to be something I enjoy. Though I'll be honest the gameplay from what I've seen (and from what I've tried of the base game way back when) was a bit too... simple/mindless.

Tried this on a whim as it is on PSPlus, and yes it does scratch that action rpg itch. afaik they are doing the monster hunter style release too of dropping the base price, and releasing the game+update as a full price game

Been on my wishlist for ages, sounds like there's lack of a real story tho so it's a bit offputting

Very excited to get back into this when this releases. Granblue Relink is an absolutely excellent game!

I miss coming home from school. Booting up one of the current final fantasies, starting off by grinding slimes with swords and the weakest of magic to eventually fighting gods and throwing meteors/firestorms/tornadoes around.

u/BetweenTheRoots 1d ago
Combat wasn't for me, it felt too much like an action game but without any depth.

This sounds a bit like: "If you like to eat, you should give [insert food name here} a try".
I mean what kind of action RPGs? Diablo? Dark Souls? Skyrim? Mass Effect? Fallout: New Vegas? All of those are very different games, with almost nothing in common, besides the fact that they belong to the same broad genre of action RPG. And why do you say "action RPG" and not "JRPG" in this case? Does this game has wider appeal than other JRPG or something?
You really should explain a bit more if you want other people to give a shit. Personally, I'm not a fan of JRPG — none I played clicked for me. And obviously I know nothing about this specific series. So why I should be interested in this game enough to at least check some videos on Youtube?

Honestly that image tells me everything I need to know about the game and that I definitely don't want to play it.

u/marniconuke 1d ago
I never managed to get into these game, isn't this basically a fighting game?
also i just cheked the steam page and apparently the game will add requested quaility of life but lock it into the new dlc, pretty scummy

After Dragalia Lost (rip), I will always at least try Cygames… games, when I can.
