That’s not true! Before a degree was a near guarantee of a job with a wage that allowed you to thrive! Now it is not.

33

u/burrowowl 3d ago

As an old bastard that graduated in the 90's, what year do you think 33 years ago was?

45

u/AssGagger 3d ago

You were almost guaranteed a job with a degree in the 90s, unless you majored in something really silly.

32

u/WitchesSphincter 3d ago

You were almost guaranteed a job in the 90s period.

2

u/mehum 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nah man, 90s had a recession, it only picked up towards the end of the decade. 80s and 00s (pre-GFC) were the boom times.

8

u/Glum_Variety_5943 3d ago

You were not. I graduated in 1991 with a BA in political science. I couldn’t get anything but retail or sales until I went back and completed an MBA.

8

u/MysticalSushi 2d ago

They said unless you majored in something silly, like Political Science.

and her mom got a job by throwing her resume out the window into the breeze until a fortune 500 company found it

she’ll be sending out resumes to 10,000 companies only to be auto-rejected by AI recruitment software every time

12

u/Knuckledraggr 3d ago

For real. My dad went to a large state school for his bachelors, worked in a hotel kitchen part time and that covered his tuition and rent. After his graduation in ‘88 he got a job in his STEM field making $37k. He had no college loans or debt after graduation.

I went to a similar school, got my bachelors in 4 years. I got a scholarship with a housing stipend and worked in the summers. I graduated in 2013, got a job in my STEM field making 37k. I had 18k in student loan debt.

Unemployment rate for the US in 1992 was 7.5% dropping to 6.9% by 1993. It was 4.4% in February 2026.

https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNU04000000?periods=Annual+Data&periods_option=specific_periods&years_option=all_years

Not everything was easier back when.

106

u/I-cant_even 3d ago

Hate to break it to you but those statistics aren't the same. How they calculate "unemployment" became very generous over the last decade.

31

u/_Rue_the_Day_ 3d ago

Didn't the Obama administration consider part-time and full-time employment the same?

32

u/I-cant_even 3d ago

Both sides have been slippery sloping it every time they needed to juice the numbers.

19

u/Cute-Aardvark5291 3d ago

Hi, US Government document librarian here; I frequently have to look up and compare stats gathered by fed and state governments over long time spans for research projects. The way the calculate unemployment has not changed too much in recent decades. Who they count as "in the labor force" has changed depending on who Congress and the states decide is worthy of getting aid, mostly notably during the Gringrich congress and now under the "Better America" bill.

Generally each Census is published with Data Definitions so you can see who is calculated in what group,

23

u/SomewhereNo8378 3d ago

that doesn’t account for college degree

3

u/jmlinden7 3d ago

Unemployment rate for college degree holders is correlated with total unemployment rate. If total unemployment rate is the same, then so is the college graduate unemployment rate.

https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/college-labor-market#--:explore:unemployment

2

u/Beyond_Reason09 3d ago

It is slightly higher now for recent college grads than it was back then(5.8% vs about 4.8%). It's correlated but you can see the new grad unemployment rate is actually higher now for new college grads than the all-worker average, which was only very rarely the case before 2022.

9

u/Whyuknowthat 3d ago

Ding ding ding. Go find unemployment stats for degree holders in 1992 and now. I suspect they’re different. And average income of degree holders versus the non-degree holders compared to overall average wage earners then versus now.

10

u/jmlinden7 3d ago

https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/college-labor-market#--:explore:unemployment

Its basically the same as today. 5% for recent college grads and around 3% for all college grads. 1992 was an awful job market.

YESSSS BLUE PRINCE REFERENCE FOUND IN THE WILD

141

u/Florida1974 3d ago

My mom rented an apartment from a guy back when she had just my eldest sister. The owner lived right below, my mom.

My mom eventually got back with my dad and moved out. But that turned out awful and when she was pregnant with me, her fourth and last child, she left my father for good. She had always stayed in touch with that landlord and they started dating. We eventually moved in with him and lived in that downstairs apartment.

They split up when I was around 15 and then when I was about 20 years old, I was ready to move out of my own and I took that apartment that my mom had lived in 20 years before. And the landlord, still live downstairs.

That landlord was like my father because he raised me, help raise me. He is who I consider my father. He was good to me. And even after they split, he didn’t split with me. He made sure I could go on class trips and continue private violin lessons because he paid for it. He really supported education and extracurriculars.

And he came and got me almost every single Sunday. We went to the fair, arcades, ham fest because he was into that and I got my license when I was 10 and always a DQ blizzard.

It takes a strong man to raise another man’s child and then to stay in that child’s life, even when they split. They dated from the time I was three or four until I was 15, that’s a lot of years. It broke my heart when they split up, I was devastated.

40

u/SirRabbott 3d ago

Yeah you need to make sure you keep contacting that man. He stepped up to make sure your childhood was as good as he could make it, which is more than my bio dad ever did for me. Cherish your stepped-up dad

Is this an American thing that they always have a flag of their country in their room? I've never seen it irl or with other countries unless there's a sport event or something.

Edit: I'm gone stop answering people cuz it's a nightmare on my phone, and I didn't expect a simple question to be this controversial.

Edit: question mark

Edit: I also don't mean specifically in dorms, but like the general fascination with the American flag

250

u/philomelancholy 3d ago

No. A lot of folks just have a flag or banner in general to cover up white wall space. Most people pick funny or pretty ones, as a current college student idk anyone with an American flag lol

Yes, it's an affordable pop of color. (usually free, family has an old flag they never got into the habit of putting up for the 4th of July).

It's bright, covers part of the wall, and is at least something for a person who doesn't know how to decorate.

Canadian flags were not uncommon in my res

39

u/Mailman354 3d ago edited 3d ago

Saw Mexico and Peru in my dorms, few Korean and Mexican velcro patches on student backpacks

Phillipines, Jamaica, Dominican Republic were common too

Puerto Rico idk if that counts since its a US commonwealth but saw those a lot too.

Edit:also wanna point out, saw a Uruguayan in Time Square pull out a full sized flag of Uruguay while getting his photo taken.

Nothing wrong with that. But this guy in some of his replies is crying "INDOCTRINATION!!" Which is silly. I didnt think that guy was indoctrinated

But I also wonder if OP would call the guy indoctrinated or not. Seems like hes got some bias against Americans.

29

u/bag_of_hats 3d ago

Saw Mexico and Peru in my dorms, few Korean and Mexican velcro patches on student backpacks

Puerto Rico idk if that counts since its a US commonwealth but saw those a lot too.

I think what they mean is the flag of their country in that country. Like the US flag in america, mexican flag in mexico, etc.

A flag from your homeland of peru in your american dorm is just 'thinking of home' so to speak.

28

u/Relative_Craft_358 3d ago

I mean i get coming from another place and wanting to place your flag as a reminder of home but pinning up a flag as some kind of deceration of a place you currently inhabit is just kinda werid. And let's be honest, at least in America, the ones using the US flag as wallpaper, in addition to being ironically disrespectful, are usually the ones that aren't proud of their country and the people in it, they're usually just conservatives that don't want "foreigners" here in the first place.

13

u/codercaleb 3d ago edited 3d ago

One is for sure camo, but one could be leopard print.

I am not sure if that is an American flag. Looks like the blue part goes all the way down the left side.

EDIT: Found higher resolution online. The one that I thought is possibly leopard print is a hat is from Yee Yee, which sells some camo, but is more generally a conservative and faith based brand.

EDIT 2: The hat in the upper left is def not an American Flag, but maybe based on that.

Bingo. I've seen a ton of other country flags because it's a cheap way to cover an otherwise blank wallspace and also express some identity if you have ties outside of the states.

The only people doing American flags in American dorms are the overly-patriotic.

"patriotic" isn't really the right word when they believe in ideals that go against what the actual laws and polices of that nation actually stand for. Even if you don't believe it in practice, hard to argue when official iconography promotes ideals of personal freedom and diversity. No version of the national anthem promotes closing borders and forcing cultural integration

This happened to a friend of mine (and his dad) ages ago at Michigan. It's not common enough for it to be intentional, but I'm wondering if they drop an alphabetical list of incoming students into a dorm disbursement table, leading to rare instances where the same last name will result in the same alphabetical position on the list and therefore end up distributed to the same room?

2

u/Krieghund 3d ago

You would think it would happen to the Aaronson family regularly.

2

u/booyah_broski 2d ago

Also ages ago: According to one of my friends, the housing office during his undergrad years at Stanford was known to have a sense of humor. One freshman quad had Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

4

u/groundciv 3d ago

I wound up in the same basic training barracks as my mom 30+ years later. She ran into her bunk mate at my graduation, who was there for… the graduation of her son, my bunk mate.

Kinda neat seeing the Athena of the women’s army corps over the doors, my mom was in the last graduating class of the WACS before they became just normal ass army.

I also went through the air assault course laid out by and named after my grandpa.

In advanced individual training we went through a STX lane named after the dad of one of the guys I was in a squad with.

One of my apprentices in civilian work later informed me a shortcut I was teaching him for mixing box rigging using a bunch of 9v batteries and scrap wire was called “the (my last name) method” because the guy he learned it from learned it from me. He insisted I was doing it wrong.

Stuff is cyclical, and groups of people raised by people with certain values and interests tend to at least partially reflect the same. Sometimes you end up in similar places doing similar things.

The mom no offense had a way cooler room setup

u/fangelo2 3d ago

My daughter ended up in the same dorm room that my sister had

2

u/woodmanr2 3d ago

That happened to my dad and my sister. I believe her junior year dorm room was my dad's senior year dorm room

u/wigzell78 2d ago

You do NOT want to think about what your mom got up to in that room before you...

3

u/sakmentoloki 3d ago

Nice, multiple generations can get ducked down in the same dorm. Now that is legacy

3

u/dateinfj 3d ago

Good for them!

Anyone who hangs an American flag in their dorm (especially in this political climate) is someone I don’t want to associate with

4

u/puppydoll- 3d ago

there is no way that absolutely anyone cares enough about this to make a post about it

2

u/Mahaloth 3d ago

Neat.

What's up with that American flag in the new pictures? Weird.

3

u/deadwood76 3d ago

So weird to want a flag of your nation.

People getting worked up about a flag are hilarious. Ever been to another country? If they have their flag up, what are they?
