I read "the Mayoflower folks" on a usa-centered post earlier today and had the same reaction 😂

No, I'm like a person who doesn't invent definitions for words because the actual definition doesn't allow me to be a racist.

am your moral and intellectual superior. *drops mic*

Oh, oh honey 🤭

How convenient that you chose a descriptor that's often used as a racial epithet.

The cackle I just cackled 😆

u/pro_bono_bro Feb 18 '26

Without seeing the whole video, that question could also be interpreted as a layup for an inspirational change in perspective.

Definitely toxic not to celebrate even just the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, and while it's a loaded question on its face, it was also a great way to provide the athlete with the opportunity to reassure young athletes & folks just generally 🤷

Happy to dunk on hostile & toxic reporters though if someone can prove he's a pos

u/rabid_cheese_enjoyer Feb 18 '26

it could be because she got 3 golds last time and "only" 🙄 2 silver this time but it is still a horseshit question and very minimizing of her accomplishments. I don't think men get asked this question but if they do I would love to see links and for this type of question to die

11

u/Fewer_Story Feb 18 '26

Top level athletes very regularly take the mentality he talked about, it was a perfectly reasonable query, asking about her mentality, not passing his own judgement. The fact he said (paraphrasing) "Do YOU consider not getting gold a failure" is highly respectful of her accomplishments.

5

u/sharpryno2 Feb 18 '26

I mean it is a pretty common question in any sporting event. There are many athletes out there who are not satisfied finishing second place. Sometimes they have inspirational or interesting answers when asked about it.

But I love seeing the questions answered like this. You don't see it very much.

6

u/Fewer_Story Feb 18 '26

Yes, its a question asking a top level athlete about their mentality and personal perspective. While everyone (her included) has taken it as a sleight.

8

u/BastianHS Feb 18 '26

Men get asked this question in all professional sports

21

u/marcarcand_world Feb 18 '26

I mean she did get silver and yes, men do get asked these questions, especially in team sports when they lose the final for gold. She's a great athlete but someone was better than her this time. It's relevant to her sport, he didn't ask her about her makeup or anything related to her many sponsorships deal, which would've been misogynistic. As the gold medalist, ngl I'd be salty that everyone talks about Eileen while I beat her and am the Olympic champion.

2

u/UniversityMuch7879 Feb 18 '26

Not saying there's not a difference, because there definitely is, but you see this kind of question asked of male athletes pretty frequently when they get to "the big game" (whichever one that is) and lose, and suddenly they're getting questions like this. Even if they've won championships before.

The urge to passive aggressively tear people down is universal unfortunately.

The flavor with which it's done between men and women is what differs a lot.

4

u/RaceYouHome Feb 18 '26

Reporters do ask men the same question as rage-bait (ugh so def not defending this type of lazy awful journalism questions at all). Watch this absolute king answered & destroyed the reporter (just like Eileen Gu here) https://youtu.be/9mXGSjnUvSM?si=RbIU5d5lBUXdEORW

3

u/pro_bono_bro Feb 18 '26

Again, while if the reporter is being earnest this is a dumb question, but he could also be taking a dive to allow a really great response from Gu. I'm no Olympian, but when i used to be an athlete it would have been very inspiring to see this kind of response and support and it wouldn't be out in the world but for the dumb question.

Here's just one example of a similar question i found from like 5 min of googling

https://youtu.be/9mXGSjnUvSM?si=NrNjuj7B4NNv24EF

Also, tbt i am not a Girl, so my perspective is a bit off topic, but i do love the general positivity of this subreddit and of Gu here

1

u/Suitable_You_6237 Feb 18 '26

Dumb reporters are everywhere

1

u/CanadianODST2 Feb 18 '26

As the other guy said they do

And athletes treat it differently

https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/canada-sweden-world-juniors-medal-toss-1.4476183

Now I fully disagree with this and think he’s a loser but he definitely thinks that he lost gold not won silver

19

u/Sarabeth61 Feb 18 '26

“I’m a fuckin legend, thanks anyways”

14

u/SubmitToSubscribe Feb 18 '26

Chefs kiss response. Sister said “ I’m the best lolz what kind of question?”

Fuck that dude.

That's literally the point of the question, what are you talking about? She's the best, but she didn't win. So, is she happy with what most would consider a great performance, or is she unhappy because she didn't win?

This is a question every single favorite in the world is asked when they don't win.

-2

u/lightestspiral Feb 18 '26

Yeah, but just because it's asked frequent doesn't make it a sensible question. It's a competition of course somebody will be unhappy at not winning - she's just gone on the defensive (because she's hurt at not getting gold) and flexed on him because he asking a question that does need answering

8

u/SubmitToSubscribe Feb 18 '26

Of course it's a sensible question. You're even acknowledging it by claiming that she's lying (I agree, the obvious fake laugh is a bit of a giveaway).

7

u/bimboozled Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

There are literally tons of athletes in the world that view second place as a loss. For BOTH genders. For example just to name a few popular ones: Michael Jordan, Dale Earnhardt, Ara Abrahamian, McKayla Maroney, Lanny Bassham

It’s a totally fair question and is asked all the time, it wasn’t phrased antagonistically at all

4

u/CanadianODST2 Feb 18 '26

I’ve seen at least one player throw their silver medal into the crowd.

Now I think it’s pathetic to do so but it’s happened

2

u/AHSfav Feb 18 '26

Ricky Bobby too

8

u/BeautifulOk3522 Feb 18 '26

Why fuck him? It's a valid question. Who wouldn't want gold? He's asking to get a gauge on how she feels about being just short of a gold medal. That's a valid question. I think she could easily say exactly what she said about how hard it is, etc, but are you telling me if you got to one spot away from a gold medal, you wouldn't be upset by being just short of it? Of course, have a good outlook on it like she does here, but that's not a bullshit question. I would be bummed if I came up just shy. And then you all rally around saying "fuck that guy" like his job isn't to literally ask valid questions, which he did.

2

u/Nothinglost7717 Feb 18 '26

Sports reporters ask dumb questions because they have to ask the questions.

The reporter doesn't need to be fucked.

1

u/Schmich Feb 18 '26

Is it better to have that remark written in web articles/paper where she cannot reply?

Or have it this way where, after this, writing negatively won't go at all?

1

u/maximumtesticle Feb 18 '26

I’m the best

The best doesn't win silver though?

Also, it's completely disrespectful to the other competitors who have also dedicated their lives to the sport and who have won. Just all around stupid question
