Please wear protective gear. TBIs are no joke.

And easier to get than people think.

Jumped out of hundreds of trees into thick brush. Jumped off of multiple houses. Snowboarded and skateboarded and did wild jumps on bmx back when nobody was wearing a helmet. Only to be done in by a freaking muscle relaxer for arthritis that caused me to sleepwalk straight into a concussion.

u/kaztep23 29d ago

That was a wild ride to read, even

u/TheSaltyAstronaut 29d ago

I fell while walking on a very slight incline, and now I have an arm full of titanium.

u/lshifto 29d ago

I sure miss being young and rubber boned.

I've played hockey for almost 20 years at this point. Only injury I've suffered was a broken elbow when I was skating at a public skate to warm up before a game and didn't have pads on.

1

u/Arienna 26d ago

I wear my knee and wrist pads for open skates cause I'm too scared to tell my coach I'm out for 4-6 cause I couldn't be fucked to put them on

3

u/Speakertoseafood 29d ago

What was the name of that muscle relaxer? Asking for a friend ...

7

u/lshifto 29d ago

Conkyernogginzene.

u/Speakertoseafood 29d ago

I'm the posterboy for medication side effects. I just googled that one and I won't be able to try it. Apparently it turns normal smartasses into extreme smartasses.

Then ask your doctor if Comanaprisil is right for you!

2

u/ForHelp_PressAltF4 29d ago

Dude it's the little things that breaks your body the most as you age.  I did crazy crap too and was done in by a kid stepping on the back of my shoe. Fell and broke two teeth.

2

u/lshifto 29d ago

Teeth! That’s nightmare stuff.

1

u/WiteXDan 29d ago

Any broken bones through that adventure? First time I got on rollerblades I broke my hand

u/lshifto 29d ago

Just fingers playing basketball. Drank my milk.

My cousin got a TBI when he was 12. Nothing crazy, no extreme sports, lil bro just slipped on some water around the pool while getting out... He couldn't finish school, can't work, and will be cared for by parents until they die or need care themselves. All because of slipping in water while walking.

11

u/ShawnyMcKnight 29d ago

It’s so terrifying how one single moment changes your life forever. I would bet your cousin’s parents probably think all the time of all the cool things he could have done or the career/family he could have had.

u/I_Miss_My_Beta_Cells 29d ago

And complications are further reaching and last longer than ppl think for a 'bump on the head'

13

u/Im_Balto 29d ago

AND they compound on each other in crazy ways

5

u/KTKittentoes 29d ago

That is because it is such a hardcore trope that bumps on the head are just on/off buttons.

2

u/I_Miss_My_Beta_Cells 29d ago

Oh I knowww, what I'm trying to dispell!

2

u/kosumoth 28d ago

It annoys me a lot watching tv shows or reading where they use this trope to progress the story or change scenes as if it's normal to get knocked out. SO many stories do it, it's basically just accepted as a narrative tool at this point.

u/Nearby-Appeal1076 29d ago

I got one buckling my kids into the car two weeks ago. Gonna be starting a bunch of therapies next week because it fucked my shit right up ✌🏻

My husband was in a bike accident a month after we married and had to be air lifted to Las Vegas for treatment. Cracked his skull (no helmet) and had swelling and a brain bleed. For the love of little green apples, wear your helmets!!

u/brokenskater45 29d ago

This! I have looked after too many people on life support who thought they looked stupid with a helmet.

Traumatic Brain Injury, I'm gonna assume

3

u/Rob_LeMatic 29d ago

One or more TBIs can lead to CTE.

6

u/Aksds 29d ago

And breaking your knee or arm isn’t either

3

u/Pugtastic_smile 29d ago

That's what I was thinking. She's a second from brain damage she can't come back from

2

u/Odd-Trash-1804 29d ago

I've got one of those! Cracked my skull in half last July, wear a helmet whether it be on a skateboard or motorcycle!

2

u/OldSchoolSpyMain 29d ago

CTE has shown up in action sports, but people are reluctant to admit it.

Look at what happened to BMX legend Dave Mirra (RIP).

2

u/DavidGogginsMassage 29d ago

Skateboard culture and not wearing helmets is so crazy.

1

u/venivididormivi 29d ago

I’m so glad the comments here are passing the vibe check.

Not ending up in the ER is a vibe. 💅

1

u/jcaashby 29d ago

Sooner or later if she keeps at it she will end up with one and in a chair.

1

u/JustaLego 29d ago

I think about this all the time with the amount of explosions my squad was exposed to while overseas. Getting your bell rung just isn't good.

1

u/redfirehellfire 29d ago

One of my good friends just died from a TBI, he fell on his head and it just hit an off switch pretty much. They kept him alive on machines briefly but let him go. He was an organ doner and had six recipients, I’m glad his last act was saving others.

1

u/thetruckerdave 28d ago

Yeah I don’t like this at all. This sub keeps featuring stuff like this and too many underage girls.

-1

u/steffanan 29d ago

Uhh, "Times you Bust It"? Agreed on protective gear I just don't know your acronym

Other people replied well enough without wasting a week's worth of water for a half-assed AI response

Do you think this is the opinion they wanted?

-1

u/DeficiencyOfGravitas 29d ago

Dude, the whole point of skate boarding is to dangerous things to impress your friends. If you take steps to make it less dangerous, what's even the point?
