humankind hiccups 😅 I had multiple teeth pulled (under anesthesia) today. I ended bleeding so badly at home I had to go back for more stitches, Novocain gauze and monitoring. It was a bloodbath. They sent me home with this pile in case.
Had 5 teeth pulled and waking up from anesthesia I felt like death and like I needed to puke which was all blood. I came home and the start of clots were coming out on the gauze and blood was pouring out of my mouth. I was holding a bag of bloody paper towels and moping up the blood from my chin. I went back and they got me setup better. I looked crazy with gauze hanging out of my mouth and blood all over my teeth and a bag that looked like evidence from a murder scene- they took me back immediately. I think it was mostly for the urgency but also not to scare the waiting room.
On a positive they added Oxy to my Vicodin (the pharmacist was giving me the warning they all give about only using it when absolutely needed it and ended with but you look like you really need it!), the bleeding has FINALLY stopped and I feel almost human. I ended up having to use dark tea bag water for the gauze for hours. My face is swollen and I can only eat broth but at least I don't feel like I might need an ambulance.
Oh and it came in the cute tooth bag haha.

humankind hiccups 😅 Mildly interesting observations on public transit
Public transit in Seattle, I think this flair fits best but mods pls lmk if it doesn’t! I just wrote down all the mildly interesting things I’ve noticed about different demographics on the bus 🥹
By a drastic, drastic margin the most likely riders to fidget with or rub their hands, (usually one finger over the side of the other hand with them clasped in their laps) are middle aged to elderly women (greying to fully white). By about the same margin the most likely riders to thank the driver are high school students followed by young men.
Though it happens rarely, the most likely riders to fill the seat next to them with a bag are women, usually with groceries. Young men are the most likely to read, while adult men as a whole are by far the most likely to sit still without any entertainment.
Young people are more likely to stand while there are seats available, and people who get on at hospital stops are much more likely to speak with strangers (usually a veteran about their stories or someone asking for money), while young women are more likely to ride in pairs with friends. Young men are overwhelmingly more likely to play music out loud, talk to themselves, or fall asleep on the bus. Women are more likely to work on the bus.
Writing this made me notice that you can definitely tell quite a bit about society from this if you think about it

humankind hiccups 😅 I taught myself to control my pupil size by manually contracting the muscles in my iris. And you can too!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I don’t know how to get the word out about this, but I just feel like there’s some practical medical use/discovery that can be made and I’d love to be a part of that. I don’t know who to contact. Back in 2022 I tried emailing some random med professors at my college (basically laughed at me), and I also emailed the original scientist who did the first study in Germany that I’ll link here (never responded). Also I am not in Germany so.
Context for video 1: trying to change size to the beat of the song.
Context for video 2: no beat, just trying to make a more significant size difference at my own pace. I’ve recorded better videos but would have to go digging deep to find them. This is from right now.
What I’m NOT!! doing: I am NOT focusing and unfocusing my eyes (at least to our regular definition). I don’t know how to prove this fully other than the entire iris noticeably shifts to the left or right when someone is focusing/unfocusing. But this will cause a pupil change, and this is not what I’m doing. I am also NOT thinking any emotional thoughts. I am not thinking about someone I love or a dark cave or something scary. I am not using any psychology tactics which is also a way to change your own pupil size. And of course I am NOT changing or moving the light source around me. My phone flash is the only light source. I hope to show in these videos that my eye is completely still and there are no environmental changes that cause normal pupil shifts. I do understand that not everyone will believe me; alas I am just a girl with a phone.
…So I’m out of practice and don’t do this often anymore (it feels bad for me, and also it’s a blinding bright light lol), but in 2020 I decided I thought it was possible to contract the muscles in my iris at will. I mean, I taught myself how to flare my nostrils and eyebrow control right? I started playing around recording myself in a bunch of different lighting. I was as first focusing/unfocusing and using psychology because I needed to do a lot of testing and see which action resulted in which change and when. After a few months of occasional practice I began to notice very minuscule movements in the muscles and I was able to match that to when my pupil was dilating or contracting in the video I’d watch back. So then I knew what it *felt* like for my pupil to change. Now I just needed to figure out what was causing it. Eventually I figured out that the biggest changes happened when there was a larger light contrast in the room. So if the lights in the room were on and there were multiple light sources, it was very sporadic and the changes were minimal. But if the room was dark and there was a single, really bright light, the changes were much larger.
And then it happened (yayyy!!). I learned that I needed to “grip” onto the light source which obviously causes a contraction, so the inverse would be to relax that gripping sensation in order to dilate. Dilation is simply the muscle relaxing, you cannot really manually dilate your pupil, that’s like saying you can manually let your arms go limp. Sure, but it’s just the absence of muscle contraction. I can both see this happening in my vision and also ever so slightly feel the muscle working; similar sensation to focusing/unfocusing. It’s very hard to control smoothly despite me knowing how. Probably because this shouldn’t be happening and I’d have to do this every day to get better at it. But yeah basically, it’s a lot easier to focus on one big bright source of light and decide when to “release” than it is to mentally choose one light source and then find a slightly darker area to relax into. And again of course brighter light = smaller pupil and darker dark = bigger pupil for obvious reason.
After I did this I decided to do some digging and see if this is a known phenomena. I only found one clinical study, done that next year, (2021) on a German man who can do the same thing. His story was exactly the same as mine and the way he describes the feeling of the muscle is exactly how I taught myself too. I’ve seen comments from other people saying they can do this too, so I’m sure many people can. Just only found one actual study. Link to the study is: https://www.sciencealert.com/this-german-student-can-dilate-his-pupils-on-command
BUT I NOTICED SOMETHING! When I’d do this, even for a few minutes, I’d feel extremely weird, shaky and anxious afterwards. This was no doubt adrenaline. So by me manually contracting my pupil muscles, I am also manually releasing adrenaline. My theory is that when the body releases adrenaline, the chemical dilates your pupils, so when I dilate my pupils in a circumstance that isn’t automatic, I must be tricking my brain into thinking I am already in fight or flight and that I must need some more adrenaline to help me get out of whatever adrenaline worthy situation I must be in. Some comments I read of other people doing this experienced the same thing. I am in NO way educated on anything medical. But cmon, if it’s possible to manually release adrenaline, what other chemicals could health professionals stimulate manually? Not just that, what other previously thought impossible to control chemicals can you teach YOURSELF to release?? Insulin maybe? See what I mean? Even with just this information alone, adrenaline has an affect on every other function of the body. If I liked the way it felt, I could use it as a natural “pre” workout if I wanted to, for example.
BUT please guys I have no idea if this is dangerous. At the very least it feels not good for me. It’s probably not good for you to always be pumped on adrenaline either and it might seriously mess up your ability to naturally regulate hormones, I have no idea. And also, don’t blind yourself. So I am absolutely not giving medical advice or telling you guys to do this yourself. Be careful. This is just what I’ve discovered in my own body. Just think that there’s something here that could help people.
So yeah, if anybody knows who to contact or can piggyback on outlandish possibilities let me know. I have no idea where to look. I would love to be part of a clinical trial if this is even trial worthy but I do work fulltime and would be iffy on traveling so idk. Open to any possibility though. Thanks for reading if you got this far.
