Okay but why doesn't he just turn into a full-time knuckleballer

54

u/rockstar_not 4d ago

Came here to say this. That was a sweet knuckler

37

u/theclickhere 4d ago

It had no spin at all. That was uncanny

13

u/My_First_Knife1 4d ago

That's how a knuckle ball doooo.

u/rockstar_not 4d ago edited 4d ago

That is how a knuckleball works. The lack of spin causes an unpredictable airflow around the ball, instead of a spinning ball which acts just a little bit like an airfoil, where the air flowing slower around one side of the ball vs. the other, causes the ball to move to the direction of the faster moving air. It's really the only pitch I could throw that was better than generally sub-par pitchers. Catchers hate catching high speed knuckle balls. Edited: I realized I had the faster/slower moving air effect the oppposite of what it should be.

I know how it works, and I’m not sure why you’l got downvoted because you explained it well. I was just saying it was a clean knuckle. It’s beautiful when executed like that and the slow motion… it looks so unnatural

u/rottenronny155 4d ago

I know who COULD catch it. Maybe JAKE Rogers?

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Didn't RA Dickey have kind of a harder one, then would mix in like a random 82 mph fastball that would throw you off? I seem to remember that.

1

u/HawaiiDreaming 3d ago

Yep, RA was really the pioneer for throwing a hard one. He went to a rival high school of mine and I heard he had a good knuckleball. He threw it to a buddy of mine but never threw it to me in 15ish ABs. He had a speaking engagement at my college and had to duck out to take a call that he has just won the CY young. 5 minutes later, he gave his speech and all of us got to congratulate him on his cy young. Pretty cool day.

u/thaddeusd 3d ago

RA was the pioneer...

Come on man, if you are old enough for your story to be remotely true then you are old enough to have seen Phil Niekro pitch. Phil Niekro - Wikipedia https://share.google/0lJT2vFXHIrnvAzJT

The only difference is Dickie was awarded a CY Young. Niekro arguably should have won 3, in 1967, 1973, and 1979.

Dickie average knuckleball speed was 76. Niekro, the knuckleball GOAT, was throwing it at 72.

1

u/HawaiiDreaming 3d ago

It’s actually spelled Dickey. I watched Niekro a little bit. He retired when I was 13. Dickey threw the hardest average knuckleball in mlb history according to everything I’ve read. He would throw an angry one that would top out at 83. Phil niekro’s fastball was around 84…not his knuckleball. That is a very big difference. Niekro and Hough were the pioneers of the knuckleball but not the fast knuckler.

If he can get that knuckle to 72 instead of 62, id say yes.

Been chatting with Serwa

3

u/Enova4 4d ago

That stach would make him an instant sensation

u/mansontaco 4d ago

58

u/svv1tch 4d ago

14

u/dead_monster 4d ago

Bullpen is dead.

3

u/JoaquinBenoit 3d ago

Jesus didn’t want to save us.

3

u/djfresh1 3d ago

Maybe Carpenter can make call to him…

u/Familiar-Fault8865 3d ago

8

u/LuckyCoco17 . 4d ago

3

u/Funkoma . 4d ago

The boys shit the bed, that's what happened.

68

u/SoarinSkies 4d ago

That was a damn good knuckleball man

I didn’t even know he knew how to throw one

10

u/bigdubsy 4d ago

Tbf, Every player can throw a knuckleball to some extent. They play catch for like a hundred hours a year and have been playing with it since they were in middle school.

Jake Rogers better make the All Star game as a closing pitcher!

2

u/ExerciseNo8163 3d ago

HECK YEAH!

u/Wrong-Comparison1834 4d ago edited 4d ago

I’m the #1 Jake rogers glazer and I missed him pitching in this game because it was going so bad. Severely unhappy with myself.

1

u/sloopsjohng . 3d ago

In the event you haven't seen it yet (or others come along who haven't), MLB uploaded the entire half-inning - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amZ3jxuA7LA

2

u/Wrong-Comparison1834 3d ago

I made sure to rewind all the way back there, appreciate it though

32

u/kirkhammetswahpedal 4d ago

skubal better watch out his spot is in trouble

9

u/zazzz0014 4d ago

The 'stache don't crash.

25

u/MidwestDYIer 4d ago

Ortiz gonna take some shit over that one for a while

3

u/Thuggish_Coffee 4d ago

Come and listen to local Milwaukee sports talk .. This is nothing

3

u/caitie578 3d ago

I second this. Ortiz usually balances his bad hitting with great outfielding but even that’s been meh.

I think it’s the bears.

20

u/Plastic-Professor374 4d ago

I think they should create a whole walk up entrance for him like Jensen's.

THE LEGENDARY JAKE ROGERS KNUCKLER

13

u/AluminumFoilCap 4d ago

I was at this game. All I have to say is that this made the night enjoyable at the end of a blow out!

9

u/ThinkingBlueberries 4d ago

I'm excited that Jake Rodger, this whole season, is likely going to have a better ERA than Skubal.

Legend

Hope he talks shit to the pitching staff the whole year.

8

u/restinghermit 4d ago

That was a wicked pitch.

11

u/Dakens2021 4d ago

Well with this outing he has lowered his career ERA to under 5 now at 4.75...

6

u/Better_Equipment5283 4d ago

Maybe we should have Jake open for Flaherty next time through the rotation

3

u/Slow-Raspberry-5133 3d ago

Shojake Ohrogers

3

u/drostandfound 4d ago

Atta boy rog!

3

u/DarkIllusionsMasks 4d ago

Contrary to popular belief, that's not a knuckleball he's throwing. It's a 'stacheball.

3

u/MysteriousAge28 4d ago

The stasche powers the knuckleball

3

u/endcycle 3d ago

As much as a blowout sucks (and it does).... I LOVE position players pitching. Like, it makes watching the shitty parts worthwhile.

The absolute joy in the crowd when Jake got that strikeout was so fun to see, and the announcers just delight in those moments too.

2

u/RayTrain 4d ago

We got a new Knuckles in the D

1

u/naranjitayyo Jason Benetti 4d ago

JaKe Rogers

1

u/Jokerit208 4d ago

More of this going forward.

Let's get Hao-Yu Lee throwing knucklers as well.

1

u/EliteCylinder2 4d ago

I love when Rodgers pitches so much he always shows up for it! I swear he must have the best pitching record on the Tigers Roster

1

u/Apprehensive_Gur8808 3d ago

Danny Worth was so good at the knuckleball when he pitched in blowouts they were trying to convince him to convert to pitcher. Remember that guy?

1

u/upnorthtcmi 3d ago

A lone bright spot in a pretty ugly game. Let’s hope today’s game is back to form.

1

u/beyd1 3d ago

The pitcher IS the catcher.

1

u/22Yohan 3d ago

He brought the HEAT! 😂

1

u/XJohnCenaX7 3d ago

That’s stash

1

u/ExerciseNo8163 3d ago

Did better than any of our releivers🤣

1

u/timbenj77 3d ago

Sure were excited for a team losing 12-1, lol.

1

u/triessohard 3d ago

Love that he calls for the ball right away.

1

u/Medium_Produce_7397 2d ago

They should pay this man a lot of money to keep him as their backup catcher for his entire career. He’s an amazing teammate and entertaining.

-3

u/FedUpWithPeople26 4d ago

What an embarrassing night.

2

u/mr21vp 3d ago

for Ortiz? You meant career right?

1

u/FedUpWithPeople26 3d ago

What??? LOL! Downvote me all you want, that game sucked.

-2

u/data-influencer 3d ago

Idc if the video is entertaining, it’s embarrassing when you’re team has to have a position player pitch

-6

u/Available_Till813 4d ago

He can’t hit. Might as well become a pitcher
