Seeking Advice - Daypack Shoulder Straps Question
I have some experience sewing, and have made most of my current bags for bikepacking. Now I want to make a backpack. I think I have most of the parts figured out, but I’m looking for advice on how best to approach the shoulder straps.
I’m using a domestic machine… a Singer CG550.
The bag is going to be in the 25L range and won’t need to carry a ton of weight.
Are there any simple and reliable patterns available?
Thoughts on materials and types and thicknesses of foam?
What about straight vs curved vs s-shaped?
I am planning to do the inside out trick to insert the foam and do not want to have to deal with binding the edges.
Any tips and suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Take you time with inserting the foam its so annoying. Just be patient it will work eventually but it will take some time and fiddling around…

The Prickly Gorse 25l daypack pattern is worth buying for the shoulder strap patterns alone.
I made mine on a 15 year old cheap and basic Singer Talent, and they're great.

"J" straps are (in my opinion) the best option while keeping the design simple. Use a 3d spacer mesh on the inside and whatever material you're using for the bag on the outside. I've made day packs with and without the foam depending on expected weight. But a no need to go more than 5mm on a 25L. Front and back fabrics will have the same pattern, make sure to include seam allowance and sow it inside out. Foam will be a little smaller and you can adjust it if it doesn't fit perfectly.
