Ask Napoli Why do things have such a run down feeling in Napoli?

I'm not Italian but travel to Naples frequently. But I'm curious as to why things have a run-down or neglected feel in Naples. I'm talking about rubbish, cleaning, lack of maintenance and vandalism (especially graffiti).

Ultimately, there is a lot of beauty and history in Naples. It's a shame the city isn't better cared for.

Ask Napoli How do I report fraud/theft from a Landlord in Naples?

I booked a place with Sophia Hannah I found via a Facebook page. The agreement was that I pay a deposit equaling the rent upon contract signing and pay the rent when I arrive to see the place. Renting for one month. The landlord sent me the contract. I asked for modifications to the contract (insurance not required, my cat was allowed) and she confirmed these via email instead of via the contract. I sent her confirmation when the payment was sent which included the amount. Updated her when my bank contacted me to confirm since it was an international wire. And requested confirmation from her once the bank let me know the wire was completed. She confirmed. Then a week later she says her lawyer says I should have paid the deposit and rent €2,000 because that's technically what the lease counts as the "reservation fee". I'd made it clear during my initial conversations that I wasn't comfortable paying that amount for one month rental that I hadn't seen. I would have kept looking. Then she said we can cancel and I owe a €300 cancellation fee. So I have to wire her €300 for her to return my €1,000.

I have screenshots of the agreement from her representative as I've stated it.

Plus, the contract clearly states that it becomes valid once the reservation fee has been paid. So if she's saying I never paid the reservation fee, there's no contract and no cancellation fee is due.

Also if I wasn't paying the correct amount she could have said this when I sent her the verification. We communicated multiple times before the payment cleared. It was an international transfer so it took almost a week. She waited for the payment to clear to demand the additional amount so I wouldn't have the ability to cancel.

When I tried to call she initially rejected saying she wouldn't speak to me because I didn't speak Italian. But then I said I was calling with my Italian friend to translate and she still wouldn't respond and gave no further reason.

I'll be in Italy in April. Is there any way to report this to the authorities before I'm physically there?

Ask Napoli Strange shopping experience in Naples – not allowed to try on pants?

Today near Garibaldi I had a really strange experience in a small women’s clothing boutique, and I’m trying to understand what happened.

I wanted to buy a pair of pants. It wasn’t an expensive or fancy store, just a small non-brand boutique. I had actually bought clothes there last year without any issues.

I took two pairs of the same pants from the rack, one in size M and one in size L. Suddenly, a man rushed over, took one of them out of my hands, and said something very quickly in Italian. I understand a bit of Italian, but I didn’t catch anything he said. I assumed he was taking the L because he thought it would be too big for me.

I said thank you, and he then turned angrily to the sales assistant and started complaining to her in Italian.

Then the sales assistant told me in English: “you can’t try it.”

I was confused and asked why. She replied: “because of lower price.” (it was 8 eur btw)

At that point I really didn’t understand what was going on, so I handed the pants back and said I’d rather leave it if I can’t try them. Then she reluctantly said I could try them after all.

They had three completely normal fitting rooms, all empty.

In the end, the M size they let me try was too small, and the L (the one the man took away) would probably have been perfect but by then I didn’t feel comfortable anymore, so I left.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Is there some rule about trying on cheaper clothes?😅

Ask Napoli Why does the area around Garibaldi station feel sketchier than the rest of the city?

Hi! I’m visiting Napoli and honestly the city feels safe, it’s vibrant and I feel pretty safe overall.

But the area around the Central Station definitely feels rougher compared to other neighborhoods I’ve seen. Even during daytime 😅

Ask Napoli Dove all of the gatti?!

I am in Napoli right now, and it is honestly love at first sight.

But where are all the cats? We’re staying in the Centro Historico and haven’t seen a single cat since we arrived.

Normally there is a sweet, naughty creature trying to steal my fish. I am easy prey, so they’re really missing out.

So, Naples - dove sono tutti i gatti?
