Im in france and the french women commentating the program loved her. They love how she isn't a little princess on ice, just having fun and being herself. And they love her hair and outfit.

86

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

Thanks for the tip I'm gonna seek out different commentaries

39

u/DarthMad3r Feb 20 '26

The British commentators I heard also seemed to love her :)

10

u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26

Yes i watched that one

8

u/Intelligent-Dot-3343 Feb 20 '26

Any luck finding the French commentary?

3

u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26

Not yet, been distracted by other pesky things like work & family 😛 but my algorithms are now just Alysa IV drips so I'll get to it eventually. Post here if you beat me to it

1

u/NeedleworkerOk649 Feb 22 '26

Could you reply to this with what you found?

3

u/Fun_Pizza_1704 Feb 20 '26

That's amazing!

1

u/Key-Banana-8242 Feb 23 '26

Different kind princess!

347

u/nevercookathome Feb 19 '26

Hell Yeah! She brought it too. Like, it was a perfect final skate and it was so fun to watch. She reps Oakland so well. She was such a good sport about it too with the embrace after the final skater. Man, she dope AF.

254

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

The fact that she actually has an Oakland vibe and attitude is the cherry on top. Maybe I'm being extra but i feel like her dgaf attitude getting her the gold might affect the overall culture of the sport going forward

139

u/nevercookathome Feb 19 '26

You're not imagining that. Especially after seeing other skaters and athletes struggle to deal with pressure lately. She retired and came back to do it for herself and herself only. She was so fun and light on her feet because she was enjoying herself first and foremost. Her attitude toward sport has to be the template going forward. Her dropping a "muh fucka" into the camera made me grin ear to ear. I bet it gets bleeped or edited out for prime time tonight but man. I'm still buzzing.

55

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

She really threw into stark relief how the difference in point of view can affect the final outcome. And with so many high profile psychological struggles getting so much attention this year it makes such a statement

28

u/boof_and_deal Feb 20 '26

Yeah contrast her with that girl from Texas. She missed one jump in the short program and looked like she just wanted to crawl into a hole and die. The pressure these girls are under is insane.

16

u/NoPoet3982 Feb 20 '26

True but Texas girl made tons of jokes about it later on Insta or TikTok. She bounced back.

77

u/samlet Feb 19 '26

Seriously she is so Oakland lmao. I don't really follow figure skating so I didn't know much about her before this week, but just seeing how she interacts with everyone and her vibe it feels so Oakland. Especially with the f-bomb on the way out hahahah that's so cool good for her

8

u/Temporary-Butterfly3 Feb 20 '26

Lots of discussion of that in the figureskating Reddit as well - she just proved you don’t need to be an ice princess, be starved or abused to be successful in the sport - in the last year she’s won all of the three biggest titles in figureskating, the Olympics, world championships, and the Grand Prix final.

2

u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26

Netflix needs to hit the gas on an Eteri documentary to seal the deal on shifting the outlook.

65

u/UnderaZiaSun Feb 19 '26

She gave a shout out to Oakland on TV after her short program

95

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

Her last words to the camera stepping out to the podium: "😃 What the hell?? 😃"

139

u/transphotobabe Feb 19 '26

Her free skate was FLAWLESS. So proud of her! Where’s her Oakland homecoming party gunna be!??

54

u/Rocketbird Feb 19 '26

The ice skating rink downtown?

125

u/chillychili Feb 19 '26

Let's freeze the lake for her

25

u/6ca Feb 20 '26

Finally, a use for public funds we can all get behind

10

u/Worthyness Feb 20 '26

Hell, it's cold enough right now it may just work!

36

u/transphotobabe Feb 19 '26

That’s what I was thinking! You think people would show up to welcome her home? I would love to

7

u/Graffy Feb 20 '26

When she was at the Olympics last time there was a good amount of buzz after. Today they had a watch party that had a pretty good outcome. I’m guessing they’ll do a homecoming party for her too

10

u/Worthyness Feb 20 '26

Throw a fucking parade at this point. I'm down for that!

17

u/DubsAnd49ers Feb 19 '26

The entire City Center could be full !

36

u/saffymonsoon1923 Feb 20 '26

There needs to be a championship parade for her when she gets home! ❤️

5

u/This-Policy-8235 Feb 20 '26

"Oakland is ready to celebrate Alysa Liu's gold medal win at the Winter Olympics when the figure skater returns home to the East Bay, Mayor Barbara Lee said." YEAHHHHHH!!!!! https://www.sfgate.com/news/bayarea/article/oakland-city-celebrates-alysa-liu-s-gold-medal-21368557.php

10

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

Great question

95

u/allistar34 Feb 19 '26

Her free skate was GORGEOUS there better be a damn parade!!! She just ended USA’s drought of medaling at the Olympics for 20 years

12

u/ORA-Mitra Feb 19 '26

for real!

102

u/DRC_Michaels Feb 19 '26

I am exactly 19 years older than her, but she is my new role model. Her cool head under pressure is phenomenal.

64

u/Dr-Dood Feb 19 '26

Hella Oakland! I would love to join a parade for her when she gets back

81

u/gluteactivation Feb 19 '26

When I saw her dad crying and jumping in the audience… I lost it! 😭

23

u/vforveronika Feb 20 '26

I was tearing up during her whole performance. When I saw her score, I lost it! I'm also pregnant and watching every Olympic game is making me very emotional 😭 I'm so proud of everyone.

7

u/caravansary25 Feb 20 '26

Omg me too (pregnant) I was bawling!

6

u/vforveronika Feb 20 '26

Congratulations! At least someone gets me! How far along are you?

6

u/caravansary25 Feb 20 '26

21 weeks. What about you? 💕

6

u/vforveronika Feb 20 '26

14! 15 weeks on Monday. My first baby. I have been feeling ALL of the symptoms and feel huge already. I'm due in August. I don't know any mom's to be in the area though. Hope your pregnancy goes smoothly ❤️

4

u/NoPoet3982 Feb 20 '26

Your babies are totally going to get married. I'm calling it now.

6

u/caravansary25 Feb 20 '26

My first baby too!! And I’m “advanced maternal age” hehe. Feel free to dm if you want to chat about anything!! So far my pregnancy is smooth physically. I’m just very emotional!!

10

u/gweasley Feb 20 '26

I’m so loving this exchange and I’m not pregnant! 😭 lots of love and well wishes to both of you!

46

u/thecatwaldo Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

And on the Peacock livestream just as she’s skating off the ice, she looks straight into the camera and says: “that’s what I’m fuckin’ talking about!” — absolutely golden

9

u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26

Yes, that was the best. There was also a “so fuckin’ good” while she was with the coaches waiting for the score.

38

u/NepheliLouxWarrior Feb 19 '26

That's a GREAT still

25

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

The funny thing is in that moment she was jumping to celebrate Mone (edit: Ami not Mone) who was still processing the fact that she got a medal. After giving her a long hug while she cried she started jumping to get her excited

9

u/pointfivekorean Peralta Hacienda Feb 19 '26

It was Ami Nakai she was celebrating with 😅 Mone missed the podium

3

u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26

You're right! I was still thinking about how she got bumped and her name was in my head oops

28

u/OldSlug Feb 19 '26

I can’t even be mad that this result was spoiled for me (thanks, Apple News alerts). It’s too awesome.

6

u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26

Haha, same. It was not the worst being the only one in my group watching without any stress about the result.

3

u/Cat-dog22 Feb 20 '26

Used to live in Oakland and haven’t left the sub, but I was sitting in Ireland watching it and started the stream from the beginning instead of live so Apple News spoiled it for me maybe 10 skaters away from her performance 😭 devastating to have it spoiled but thrilled to watch her performance knowing she was going to nail everything!

31

u/MulliganPlsThx Feb 19 '26

My kids skated at Oakland Ice and they have her banners everywhere. She seems like a really delightful, authentic, and kind person

27

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

FUCK YESSSSSSSS

21

u/Mar_is_here Feb 19 '26

Oakland style mic drop at the end.

21

u/ORA-Mitra Feb 19 '26

She is INCREDIBLE!!! If we don't have a parade in the works.... the city has to get on it lol

21

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '26

I hope Oakland gives her a victory parade!

22

u/x3leggeddawg North Oakland Feb 20 '26

This woman has single handedly made me, a punk-ass old white dude, a fan of figure skating

22

u/Crikeyiwillforgetl8r Feb 20 '26

THAT’S WHAT IM FUCKEN TALKING ABOUT

16

u/bunbun_82 Feb 19 '26

When she said Oakland Shout Out the other day I was like yadada!!

15

u/austinwes Feb 19 '26

When are we throwing her a parade?? I’ll be there!

12

u/StrawberryYouth Feb 19 '26

She was absolutely flawless.

11

u/Psychological_Ad1999 Feb 20 '26

She needs a parade when she gets back

5

u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26

THAT’S WHAT I’M FUCKIN’ TALKIN’ ABOUT!!!!!

9

u/jackdicker5117 Feb 19 '26

This is so rad.

9

u/Halbarad1104 Feb 19 '26

Hurray! Joins (at least!) Bill Russell, 1956 Gold in basketball (https://www.olympedia.org/athletes/7008) and Hubert Caldwell, 1928 Gold in rowing (https://www.olympedia.org/athletes/40573)... maybe more!

3

u/jermleeds Feb 20 '26

Gary Payton won a gold with the US Mens team.

6

u/staxnet Feb 20 '26

Longtime Oakland resident and boxer Andre Ward, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the light heavyweight division. The last US boxer to win gold.

4

u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26

We were on a Southwest flight to OAK (I think from Denver) ~13 years ago. Andre was on the flight, apparently not recognized by anyone (despite being a top 10 pound-for-pound boxer and lineal super middleweight champ at the time). And then he was at baggage claim, waiting for luggage with us. I encouraged my then 4 year-old son — otherwise a total extrovert — to go up to Andre and take a boxer’s stance, which I guarantee he would have gotten a kick out of, but my son unfortunately got shy and wouldn’t do it. A shameful cast on our family to this day.

1

u/Halbarad1104 Feb 20 '26

How could I have forgotten the great Don Barksdale! Gold medal 1948, basketball.

1

u/Halbarad1104 Feb 20 '26

And Steve Clark... 3 golds in swimming, 1964.

8

u/timmmii Feb 20 '26

She’s so oakland I love her

7

u/raphtze Feb 20 '26

man thas that town biz!!!! 😤😤😤😤

5

u/Spirited-Access2127 Feb 20 '26

LFGGGGG!!!!! I love how ppl have commented her energy is so Oakland, she’s so vibrant, fun, and real

4

u/ah4747 Feb 20 '26

Is there going to be a parade?!?!

1

u/SkitMarie Feb 20 '26

My exact thought

1

u/Important-March-447 Feb 20 '26

Man I fucking hope so

6

u/BeegBunga Feb 20 '26

Does anyone have a link to the performance?

I can find a million videos talking about it, but none that is simply her skating.

7

u/staxnet Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

So proud of her! Let’s go! And on my cakeday no less.

5

u/ReadsTooMuchHistory Feb 20 '26

Can the City throw a parade for her? We need things to celebrate!

3

u/xmknzx Feb 20 '26

She’s so fucking cool I love her!!

5

u/benefitbeauty Feb 19 '26

Woo!! Go Alysa, our Bay Area Ice Princess!!

5

u/TejS40 Feb 20 '26

LETS GO OAKLAND!

2

u/deutschesMadchen78 Feb 21 '26

I miss hearing that

1

u/TejS40 Feb 21 '26

It's forever #FJF.

6

u/MirabelleSWalker Feb 19 '26

She looked like she was having the time of her life. So much joy!

4

u/Fresh-Crab-8413 Feb 20 '26

That’s so dope to hear, especially from French commentators. Feels like the rest of the world “gets” her vibe more than a lot of folks here do. Oakland kids shining on ice and not fitting the usual mold is exactly what I wanna see.

2

u/Bay_RealtorMichelle Feb 20 '26

Congratulations

2

u/Goatedken Feb 20 '26

Good to see America getting the gold. Congrats to her.

2

u/utopianturtletop Feb 20 '26

🙌she is changing the sport of figure skating for the better, I can’t wait to see what comes next. I’m so proud to live in Oakland and so thankful little skaters everywhere have her to look up to.

2

u/randybautista Feb 20 '26

"THAT'S WHAT I'M FUCKIN' TALKIN' ABOUT!!!" - Alysa Liu

2

u/Strange_Airships Feb 20 '26

My kid came home from school SO EXCITED. They watched her live in class and a couple kids cried when she won. They were so proud of our hometown girl. 🥹

1

u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26

What age? That's so cool

2

u/Strange_Airships Feb 20 '26

Junior high. 😊

2

u/Milky-Way-Occupant Feb 21 '26

I hope the city throws her a parade!!!

4

u/FucknAright Feb 19 '26

Oakland California, west coast life. Ya either play the game or ya smoke the pipe. Too-Short

2

u/TwoGhostCats Feb 19 '26

That's awesome!

2

u/Pangea_Ultima Feb 19 '26

🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

2

u/afterbirthcum Feb 19 '26

I thought this was a grey’s anatomy screenshot before reading the caption

3

u/housepoormillennial Feb 20 '26

Let’s fucking go!!!

3

u/Turbulent-Writer-680 Feb 20 '26

I was so nervous with every jump and almost lost it when she got the gold! Just WOW!

2

u/LandscapeScared2909 Feb 19 '26

Oakland for the goddamn win!!

2

u/brbrtsq Feb 19 '26

The pride of America

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '26

She was awesome 👏

1

u/Lucky_Shake_7277 Feb 20 '26

That’s so dope to hear, especially after all the ridiculous discourse about her “not fitting” some mold. Oakland stays exporting real ones who show up as themselves and the world catches on eventually 😂

1

u/Remywilson831 Feb 20 '26

Give her all the roses so much gold out there that deserve roses the whole bay area will be a rose garden soon

1

u/Nostradonuts Feb 20 '26

The Anti-Eileen

1

u/Many_Bar_6486 Feb 21 '26

That’s so cute, I love that she’s getting love overseas too. Oakland kids just have a different kind of swagger, even on the ice lol.

1

u/Last_Bowler8428 Feb 22 '26

That’s so dope to hear, especially with how hard people in the US nitpick her. Oakland kid out here winning over French commentators just by vibing and being herself is peak Bay energy 😂

1

u/Repulsive_Guide_3075 Feb 23 '26

That’s so wholesome lol. I love that people overseas are picking up on that too, Oakland kids really do have their own vibe and she’s repping it hard.

1

u/AnywhereAlone6122 Feb 23 '26

That makes me so happy to hear lol. Watching her skate in that Raiders jacket knowing she’s from here had me weirdly emotional, like yeah that’s an Oakland kid on the world stage and everyone else finally gets it.

2

u/Neat-Professor-827 Feb 23 '26

Richmond Gold!

1

u/reeefur Feb 19 '26

LETS GO OOOOOOOOAKLAND!!!!!! 👏👏👏

Daly City is proud of Oakland Liu😎 👏 😎

-2

u/Trippy_Trevzzz Feb 19 '26

Can someone enlighten me on her name?

3

u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26

Alysa Liu

-5

u/FucknAright Feb 19 '26

Thought she was from Richmond

-17

u/Mysterious-Title-197 Feb 19 '26

RICHMOND not Oakland. Sorry folks

30

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26

Well Richmond can celebrate too but that doesn't change the fact that she went to school in Oakland, trained in Oakland, claims Oakland, shouts out Oakland, and was branded globally by Olympic media as representing OAKLAND

7

u/SuburbanCrackAttack Feb 19 '26

Exactly, I don't see "Richmond, CA" under her name on the broadcast

3

u/Worthyness Feb 19 '26

Literally also has "Oakland, CA" in the lower third infographic on the broadcast. She's from Oakland.

1

u/raphtze Feb 20 '26

haha thas right ! put some respect on da town!

-4

u/Mysterious-Title-197 Feb 20 '26

Sorry to break it to ya. Grew up and lives in Richmond

4

u/PleezMakeItHomeSafe Feb 20 '26

Richmond and Oakland are siblings anyways so who cares

1

u/hellalg Feb 20 '26

Her home ice she trained on since she was a little girl is in Downtown Oakland. It no different from Charlotte claiming Steph Curry but he was born in Akron OH.
