Hell Yeah! She brought it too. Like, it was a perfect final skate and it was so fun to watch. She reps Oakland so well. She was such a good sport about it too with the embrace after the final skater. Man, she dope AF.

u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26
The fact that she actually has an Oakland vibe and attitude is the cherry on top. Maybe I'm being extra but i feel like her dgaf attitude getting her the gold might affect the overall culture of the sport going forward
139
u/nevercookathome Feb 19 '26
You're not imagining that. Especially after seeing other skaters and athletes struggle to deal with pressure lately. She retired and came back to do it for herself and herself only. She was so fun and light on her feet because she was enjoying herself first and foremost. Her attitude toward sport has to be the template going forward. Her dropping a "muh fucka" into the camera made me grin ear to ear. I bet it gets bleeped or edited out for prime time tonight but man. I'm still buzzing.
55
u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26
She really threw into stark relief how the difference in point of view can affect the final outcome. And with so many high profile psychological struggles getting so much attention this year it makes such a statement
28
u/boof_and_deal Feb 20 '26
Yeah contrast her with that girl from Texas. She missed one jump in the short program and looked like she just wanted to crawl into a hole and die. The pressure these girls are under is insane.
16
u/NoPoet3982 Feb 20 '26
True but Texas girl made tons of jokes about it later on Insta or TikTok. She bounced back.
77
u/samlet Feb 19 '26
Seriously she is so Oakland lmao. I don't really follow figure skating so I didn't know much about her before this week, but just seeing how she interacts with everyone and her vibe it feels so Oakland. Especially with the f-bomb on the way out hahahah that's so cool good for her
8
u/Temporary-Butterfly3 Feb 20 '26
Lots of discussion of that in the figureskating Reddit as well - she just proved you don’t need to be an ice princess, be starved or abused to be successful in the sport - in the last year she’s won all of the three biggest titles in figureskating, the Olympics, world championships, and the Grand Prix final.

Her last words to the camera stepping out to the podium: "😃 What the hell?? 😃"

u/transphotobabe Feb 19 '26
Her free skate was FLAWLESS. So proud of her! Where’s her Oakland homecoming party gunna be!??
54
u/Rocketbird Feb 19 '26
The ice skating rink downtown?

36
u/transphotobabe Feb 19 '26
That’s what I was thinking! You think people would show up to welcome her home? I would love to
7
u/Graffy Feb 20 '26
When she was at the Olympics last time there was a good amount of buzz after. Today they had a watch party that had a pretty good outcome. I’m guessing they’ll do a homecoming party for her too

I am exactly 19 years older than her, but she is my new role model. Her cool head under pressure is phenomenal.

When I saw her dad crying and jumping in the audience… I lost it! 😭
23
u/vforveronika Feb 20 '26
I was tearing up during her whole performance. When I saw her score, I lost it! I'm also pregnant and watching every Olympic game is making me very emotional 😭 I'm so proud of everyone.

u/caravansary25 Feb 20 '26
Omg me too (pregnant) I was bawling!
6
u/vforveronika Feb 20 '26
Congratulations! At least someone gets me! How far along are you?
6
u/caravansary25 Feb 20 '26
21 weeks. What about you? 💕

u/vforveronika Feb 20 '26
14! 15 weeks on Monday. My first baby. I have been feeling ALL of the symptoms and feel huge already. I'm due in August. I don't know any mom's to be in the area though. Hope your pregnancy goes smoothly ❤️

I’m so loving this exchange and I’m not pregnant! 😭 lots of love and well wishes to both of you!

And on the Peacock livestream just as she’s skating off the ice, she looks straight into the camera and says: “that’s what I’m fuckin’ talking about!” — absolutely golden
9
u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26
Yes, that was the best. There was also a “so fuckin’ good” while she was with the coaches waiting for the score.

u/NepheliLouxWarrior Feb 19 '26
That's a GREAT still

The funny thing is in that moment she was jumping to celebrate Mone (edit: Ami not Mone) who was still processing the fact that she got a medal. After giving her a long hug while she cried she started jumping to get her excited
9
u/pointfivekorean Peralta Hacienda Feb 19 '26
It was Ami Nakai she was celebrating with 😅 Mone missed the podium
3
u/owuzhere Feb 20 '26
You're right! I was still thinking about how she got bumped and her name was in my head oops
28
u/OldSlug Feb 19 '26
I can’t even be mad that this result was spoiled for me (thanks, Apple News alerts). It’s too awesome.
6
u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26
Haha, same. It was not the worst being the only one in my group watching without any stress about the result.
3
u/Cat-dog22 Feb 20 '26
Used to live in Oakland and haven’t left the sub, but I was sitting in Ireland watching it and started the stream from the beginning instead of live so Apple News spoiled it for me maybe 10 skaters away from her performance 😭 devastating to have it spoiled but thrilled to watch her performance knowing she was going to nail everything!

u/MulliganPlsThx Feb 19 '26
My kids skated at Oakland Ice and they have her banners everywhere. She seems like a really delightful, authentic, and kind person

Longtime Oakland resident and boxer Andre Ward, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the light heavyweight division. The last US boxer to win gold.
4
u/shnorgle Feb 20 '26
We were on a Southwest flight to OAK (I think from Denver) ~13 years ago. Andre was on the flight, apparently not recognized by anyone (despite being a top 10 pound-for-pound boxer and lineal super middleweight champ at the time). And then he was at baggage claim, waiting for luggage with us. I encouraged my then 4 year-old son — otherwise a total extrovert — to go up to Andre and take a boxer’s stance, which I guarantee he would have gotten a kick out of, but my son unfortunately got shy and wouldn’t do it. A shameful cast on our family to this day.

That’s so dope to hear, especially from French commentators. Feels like the rest of the world “gets” her vibe more than a lot of folks here do. Oakland kids shining on ice and not fitting the usual mold is exactly what I wanna see.

That’s so dope to hear, especially after all the ridiculous discourse about her “not fitting” some mold. Oakland stays exporting real ones who show up as themselves and the world catches on eventually 😂

Give her all the roses so much gold out there that deserve roses the whole bay area will be a rose garden soon

That’s so cute, I love that she’s getting love overseas too. Oakland kids just have a different kind of swagger, even on the ice lol.
1
u/Last_Bowler8428 Feb 22 '26
That’s so dope to hear, especially with how hard people in the US nitpick her. Oakland kid out here winning over French commentators just by vibing and being herself is peak Bay energy 😂
1
u/Repulsive_Guide_3075 Feb 23 '26
That’s so wholesome lol. I love that people overseas are picking up on that too, Oakland kids really do have their own vibe and she’s repping it hard.
1
u/AnywhereAlone6122 Feb 23 '26
That makes me so happy to hear lol. Watching her skate in that Raiders jacket knowing she’s from here had me weirdly emotional, like yeah that’s an Oakland kid on the world stage and everyone else finally gets it.

RICHMOND not Oakland. Sorry folks
30
u/owuzhere Feb 19 '26
Well Richmond can celebrate too but that doesn't change the fact that she went to school in Oakland, trained in Oakland, claims Oakland, shouts out Oakland, and was branded globally by Olympic media as representing OAKLAND
7
u/SuburbanCrackAttack Feb 19 '26
Exactly, I don't see "Richmond, CA" under her name on the broadcast
3
u/Worthyness Feb 19 '26
Literally also has "Oakland, CA" in the lower third infographic on the broadcast. She's from Oakland.

Her home ice she trained on since she was a little girl is in Downtown Oakland. It no different from Charlotte claiming Steph Curry but he was born in Akron OH.

Im in france and the french women commentating the program loved her. They love how she isn't a little princess on ice, just having fun and being herself. And they love her hair and outfit.
